    Flicks do not win a duel. Those SCA tricks are not dueling. Unless the blade flexes, you did not get anything that matters.

      Okay bro what's your hema rating? /j

    • @silverswordguy4191
      @silverswordguy4191 6 дней назад

      To fatally wound a person, your blade only needs to go into them about 4 inches to pierce any internal organ that they have. Blade flex is a show of stopping power, but not necessary to wound someone. If you do the action safely, it doesn't matter if you don't get that signature blade flex.

      @@swordfightingguild - I am one of the guys who taught the HEMA crowd, in the 90s. "They all fight like gentlemen until they start losing." HEMA is a sport not dueling.

      @@rogereppich245 In any case, here at UTD we generally judge our hit quality in sparring by how it felt over how it looked. If I feel a tiny tap on my hand, I'll keep fencing, but if I feel like I would have certainly lost a finger or severed a tendon, then I will stop and reset. I'm not 100% sure I know what you mean by "flicks" but you can rest easy that we do account for hit quality.

    This is why I very much dislike a lot of tournament rulesets that disallow strikes to the back of the head. That was the best and most efficient way to punish that thrust. It was good fencing, but many TO's will consider it unsafe, despite having requirements for back-of-head protection.

    • @shrimp_with_rabies
      @shrimp_with_rabies 29 дней назад

      Hi homie! FoTR here :) Strikes to the back of the head are strictly prohibited everywhere due to risks of concussions or worse. If strikes to the back of the head happen by accident (whether someone steps around and cuts at the back of the head or someone exposes it) then that’s out of your control, but someone shouldn’t try to PURPOSEFULLY aim for that. It’s reckless and puts your and your partners safety at risk.

    • @Interrobang212
      @Interrobang212 29 дней назад

      @@shrimp_with_rabies under that ruleset, pretty much every judge would rule the cut in this clip as illegal. How does one differentiate "accidental" targeting versus the opponent presenting the target?

    • @silverswordguy4191
      @silverswordguy4191 29 дней назад

      @@Interrobang212it's an angle issue with the filming. I was the one filming and I can confirm that the cut was aimed to the side of the head and it looks like it's targeting the back because the person receiving the cut ducked the head. Sorry I couldn't get a better angle on this.

    • @silverswordguy4191
      @silverswordguy4191 29 дней назад

      @@Interrobang212in tournaments, this is generally the discretion of the judges. Sometimes you get warned for targeting the back of head, but if it's super apparent that the receiver in question is exposing the back of head due to bad form or bad habits, they will get warned for exposing the back of their head.

    • @shrimp_with_rabies
      @shrimp_with_rabies 29 дней назад

      @@Interrobang212because you can literally see them duck their head bestie With them continuing forwards with the thrust, it’s possible that if they didn’t duck their head I could’ve hit the back of the head, but that would’ve been ruled as accidental because I didn’t specifically aim for the back of the head

    0:42 - 0:45 had great responses. Normally if I saw that in a movie it'd make me skeptical and think "yeah but how often would an exchange like that really take place?", but when it happens naturally it looks and feels so cool. Like "I did the thing!" lol. One time I was sparring with my cousin and I tripped, spun around and caught myself on my hands and knees. I knew my cousin wouldn't show mercy, so I swung my sword behind my back at the best angle I could think of at the time and. Clang. We both paused for a few seconds. Then stopped the fight because we were too busy going "Holy shit!" lol. Anyway, a comment for the algorithm, keep going with the videos!

    This is super cool and I'm glad that you were able to start building up and bringing people into what you love! To see people enjoy a hobby or sport that they might not normally get into, when their assumptions about it fall away and it clicks with them, is really fun. It might sound hyperbolic to say that it was a brave thing that you did, but I don't think so. Putting not only yourself but something you love out into a community or society is terrifying and overcoming fear IS bravery. Great work!

    I really like that both fighters used left and right Vom Tag mostly, and Nick used a good deal of Boar's Tusk. It made for a more active and technical match, with more clear strikes, than when both fighters use Breve/Pflug, which is really common. Bravo!

    Message from Sam (UTD Diplomat): I felt SO TERRIBLE once I realized what I'd done, and I'm so grateful the club Presidents agreed to create an extra pool for the matches ending in doubles where people who doubled could still advance to the Winners bracket. I apologized vehemently to Freddie afterwards.
