Nice work! I've been using solar to directly charge my ebike batteries for a few months now. I don't carry the panels with me but I will probably make a trailer in the future for that. I haven't had any of the issues other comments are mentioning. Something tells me none of these people have actually had these problems either, they just heard about it on the internet. I used a cheaper Elegoo 400W solar boost converter unit after seeing a number of reviews, and it works really well. You can dial in the voltage, so you don't have to charge to 100% all the time, or babysit it to stop it before it fully charges. It's good to get a full charge regularly to top balance the cells, but it greatly increases battery life to avoid fully charging or draining when reasonable. The reduced voltage drop under load with a larger battery is really nice. I definitely noticed a difference in acceleration with a 20Ah battery vs an 8Ah battery of the same voltage. I've got my bike undervolted since I don't need any more speed, just range. I also live in a hot climate and the reduced heat probably doesn't hurt either. It's great to see more solar ebikes! Tryed to put the battery like you and it was so top heavy and the bike was so tall it became a pain. And today i broke by derailleur bent and broke sprockets broke the shifter and then broke the kick stand had to make it afix gear just to get home and i could not stop or rest for 28 mile on 3rd low but my setup was 2 different battery of the same volts with the needed connections so i can hotswap them

Nice project! I suppose everything would need to sit lower to improve weight distribution, like if you could find saddle bags big enough to fit everything plus what you usually put in saddle bags, minus any liquids, obviously. ;)

I like your approach for this especially the empty battery case to plug in to the original connection for the bike. How long would it take to charge the battery with the solar panel? It seems like the solar panel would be more of a trickle charger. How much solar would you need if you wanted to charge the battery from 0-100% on a sunny day? And how many kwh are your batteries?

Do you know what your battery chemistry is? You could potentially be using a dangerous lithium-ion based one, when you could upgrade to the stable lifepo4 (however those cannot be charged when its too cold or too hot). So cooling/heating will be necessary, with a thermal cutoff. The lifepo4 batteries have 3k+ charge cycles and will not catch fire when punctured. Again you may already be doing this, but guessing not. Edit: I just finished watching where you show your battery and yikes, you are removing the BMS!? from a lipo, that's going to be a explosion / fire hazard. Once a cell ruptures it will cause burns if you are riding with it. I would not recommend going without a BMS on cells.

Constant feeding of power might r3duce the charging cycle of the battery. Also, the motor is not built for such customization ( longer trip ).

Wouldn't constantly charging instead of letting it get down to say 20% ,as is the norm , ruin the longevity by greatly reducing the number of charging cycles you get out of a battery ?

security: i dont think theres much to do but i dont htink anyone would steal a solar panel and even if a 50w panel (which i think you have) costs maybe 30$?

mayb you can just glue the solar panel to the box iwthout driling holes

caravan version: more watts, but needs the trailer pizza box version: storage, more convenient, less wattage solar only on rack version: minimal simple, no storage, less wattage do you want to directly charge the ebike or use a battery in between? i am building the same and have the same thoughts

I just did that trip - started in Las Cruces to Santa Fe, Chama, Gallup, Yellowstone, Tetons, Up to Rice Wa. and back down to Las Cruces. Had to come back to Las Cruces to take care of a couple of things then will be off and running again. I am driving the Cosmic Gypsy.
