Bobby Ray & Sons DIY
Добавлен 17 апр 2007
Sharing things we learn while wrenching on Corvettes, other cars and whatever needs building or fixing!
My dad loved cars and was an exceptional mechanic. He used to say that we could fix just about anything if we took the time to read, learn and then proceeded with patience and care. Now we can learn even faster with videos! My dad helped me immensely, I learned so so much from him, and the hours spent leaning over hoods or building or fixing things around the house are some of my fondest memories with him. Now my oldest son has become a great mechanic too - and I probably learn more from him than he does from me! So this channel is us trying to pay it forward and help others. We hope it’s helpful to you!
Note: We're always learning and welcome feedback, guidance and advice!
I'm Rob (the dad). Ray is my late father. My middle name is Raymond and my funny southern name is "Bobby Ray”.
My sons are Andrew, Mark and Ryder and currently (Nov 2022) they're ages 23, 18 and almost 10.

2005 Volvo XC70 Codes P2188 and P0101 Fixed!

Commonly these codes are caused by a faulty MAF. In my case they were caused by a broken open vacuum control valve. I was going to go look for one in the junkyard but I decided to try to repair this valve first simply using zip ties, and … it worked!

How and where position the QuickJacks and what jack points to use. The thick block provided w the QuickJack is not tall enough to clear the exhaust in the rear. Combining the short block with a block of 2” wood works perfectly. I cut four blocks from a 2x6, cutting the length to 4.75 inches, so the blocks fit snugly inside the QuickJack rails.

Scary Super Tech Oil Filter Quality! Plus ST3506, AC Delco PF46E, Mobil 1 M1-107A Cut Open
You can't tell fuck all from this ridiculous comparison. The land of stupid always disappoints.
That's what I liked about the Bosch Premium i bought for my Silverado years and years ago but where I got them stopped selling them so back then I switched to AC Delco filters. I'll order a Bosch Premium for this current ride and see if I like how it performs because there's no way it's getting a Motorcraft put back on if i plan on running it very long. The $4 way it was put together was superior to this $8.44 one.
For my group yesterday I took apart a Motorcraft 820S, a Fram XG2, and a Microgard Select 51372. And I was a little surprised at the results. The Motorcraft filter has went down in quality and I'd definitely go with the Microgard Select over either one of them. The XG2 was for the money far superior to the MC 820S EXCEPT the filtered oil returns are a lot smaller.
the problem with all these filters is that they have the steel core with the LOUVERS ISTEAD OF HOLES. Some samples of many brands have been found to have many louvers that are not punched out - no openings!
Fram premium filters are good, but they tend to cut premium features and quality a few years after a new line is introduced to the market. Most oil filters made by only two companies, yet under numerous different labels.
Arching terminals with gas vapor, not smart.
Looks good! Used Fram for most of my oil changes and never had a failure
Thanks for the video and showing proper supporting points - I plan to do exactly the same. What model of Quick Jack do you use - 5000 TL?
@@janposwiata5518 I have the older 5000SLX. The TL (new version) will lift your car 8cm higher.
You’ve clearly never ran wix it’s almost one of the best options, visual inspections don’t do much you have to do an actual oil test
i have had L98 powered Corvettes that i've run Wix oil filters on, and cut them open, and had the used oil lab tested. they do make some good filters in my opinion. these filters are all for the LT1 Corvette engine and are a different design. some people pick a brand and use one of their filters in every vehicle they own. i look at the data the manufacturers publish and then cut open a few of the top options - generally not this many ;)
How did you find out what micron filter media was inside of them
some have that info on their website, others i emailed the manufacturer.
80 to 90 percent of engine wear occurs at startup. So, flow is just as important as micron size. Pushing for a lower micron size requires more restrictive medium thus reducing flow..A white blood cell is 25 micron. Your engine, you be the judge.
your opinion on louvers vs. holes vs. that plastic cage thing on the supertech oil filters
all of them are probably fine. the plastic cage probably results in the least restriction - just based on its wide open design
10 years of using SuperTech filters and ive had 2 with bad threads. Thankfully i noticed before damaging my oil pan and exchanged them, but now that I have a nicer car ill probably go OEM or something with better QC
In the next video, I’ll be looking at 10 bottles of wine and tell you which one tastes the best without drinking them.
no motorcraft but four frams?
it never occurred to me to put a Ford filter on a Corvette
@@BRS_DIY i just assumed it was about the filter not the car...good luck
@@excelerater the title of the video is "8 Top GM Oil Filters Cut Open" ;)
So I bought a Fram Titanium FS-5 filter specifically because I watched this video. A month and a half ago I did an oil change and installed the brand new Fram filter. I did some work on the engine about a week after the oil change so I just left it alone. I installed a new cam and lifters, timing chain set, valve springs and seals with an Edelbrock TBI intake. Nothing got in the oil and the engine was fairly clean. I started it back up and ran it for a few days but the oil pressure just wasn't right. It normally hits 45~50 PSI cold and it'll drop down to 15 psi when it's hot. I could barely get 30 PSI cold and it would barely keep 10 psi when hot and the check gauges light kept started coming on. I changed the sending unit, I went through the wiring, I even changed the oil again but since the filter was brand new with less than 200 miles on it I didn't change it. Yesterday I pulled the Fram FS5 Titanium off and unfortunately all I had was another Fram extra guard filter to replace it with. I put it on, fired up the engine and it nearly hit 50 psi warming up. Once it warmed up I had a solid 15 psi back. I'm sorry to say after this experience I will never buy another Fram filter again ever. This could have been the end of a perfectly good running engine because of a freaking $12 garbage filter. I still have to cut it open because for the life of me I can't understand how this filter blocked in less than 200 miles.
be fr tho how do you make a right turn with this in a car
the dashed green means you can carefully cross to make a right turn. solid green would mean do not cross. hope that helps!
Just to follow up, replacing these items did 100% long-term fix these codes /issues!
Beer and working on cars
did you seriously not follow up on this?
Change your oil every 5K with good oil and filter Thats all it takes to keep a engine healthy Don't cheap out and no need for most expensive for every day driver
Do you have a step by step replacement for those parts you’re suggesting could be the problem from the codes it’s reading?
@@Dragonsgraffiti yes! Look at the video description!
1 riced out vete.
Riced? That makes literally 0 sense. But please explain - what elements of this car = riced to you?
The recon shifter on my kids bike had me struggling to shift gears.
Any idea where I can purchase a new sensor - I have a 1992 240 - thanks
That does look pretty good.
1:53 look at the tests it crushes every other filter...
Flow rate is also VERY important. The Mobil 1 is 30 micron and has the best flow rate.
Good until you get hit in the face with a drive
Update: The vacuum control valve absolutely needed this fix AND the codes came back! I ended up cleaning the MAF too and that seeeeems to have fixed it.
can you please do one of putting it on the lift and off next time?
Will do! I show the setup beginning at second 45 of this video. I added links to the pinch weld blocks to the video description.
Nice 💪🏽
My man’s on vacation in his Hawaiian shirt, cut’n open oil filters! Good job
This interests me because Mann-Hummel is the manufacturer of the OEM Hyundai oil filters. I just did the first oil change on my new 2024 Elantra N, posted photos from the oil change, and everyone jumped my ass for using a non-OEM filter. It particularly aroused their ire that I had dared to install a Fram (I used a Titanium). They said that there is a Hyundai TSB about non-OEM oil filters. I haven’t seen this TSB, but I’ve seen it referenced in a couple of different forums. Anyway, I wonder what the similarities between the two would be.
Interesting. BITOG brought me here. I’ve never paid a lot of attention to oil filters, aside from buying what I thought were premium or upper end filters like the Fram Ultra or Titanium. Now I find myself getting more interested since I bought an Elantra N, which, being a high performance turbo 4 banger, can easily reach some pretty high oil temperatures, compared with our Tacoma and our Odyssey. I just did the first oil change. I went to AAP and they had both the Titanium and the OEM Hyundai, so I bought the Titanium, thinking it probably had better construction than the OEM Hyundai (Mann-Hummel). Now, seeing as how Fram has dumbed these down by removing the wire backing, I’m sorta questioning my choice. I still think it’ll be OK for the 5000 mi (max) OCI I plan to do, given that it’s rated for 20,000 miles.
if it was my brand new car, i'd narrow my selection down to a couple or reputable brands with good claimed filtration efficiency, then cut them open new and have a look. it'll cost you $30 up front but you'll have piece of mind
@@BRS_DIYThat’s why I watch your channel and this channel! Y’all do all the hard work for me! Seriously, though, I am concerned after hearing that Hyundai’s released at least one TSB about aftermarket oil filters. No idea if there have been any for the N cars. But I have seen multiple references to an aftermarket oil filter TSB, on forums, Facebook, etc, and this is coming from Hyundai dealership mechanics. I now have 600 miles on the Fram Titanium oil filter I installed on the car (2024 Elantra N). No issues, and I don’t expect any, but of course it’s something in the back of my mind. I did go ahead yesterday and email Fram tech support to ask if their 9688 series of oil filters meet Hyundai specs for bypass valve opening pressure, burst strength, etc. I enjoy your channel and your posts on BITOG. Keep up the good work!
@@johnmpifer the problem is that filter construction and even filtration media vary within the same line of filters for different applications. My comparison is for filters designed for my 32 year old Corvette and all the other GM engines that use the same filter.
Thanks for sharing ! It seems Shimano is only doing these pish/pull shifters with 7 speeds but my kid bike has 6 sprockets. Do you know if the 7-speed shifter would be functional with a 6-gear sprocket and rear derailleur? Thanks !
That purolator boss is the best filter there. Not sure where the heck you’re getting the filtration numbers from. Its full synthetic media, not to mention the thickest can out of the bunch
@@ajmedeiros77 directly from Purolator. Inquire yourself - they’re very responsive.
I have used Bosch filters only, on my 15 years old VW T5 2.5 TDI. Together with Castrol Edge LL 5w30, changin every 20000 km, it's working good.
I have never heard of an application of a filter where it didn't have an internal bypass it's kind of a safety feature built-in to the filter because unfiltered oil is better than nothing at all
millions of vehicles have the oil bypass built in.
Many cars have the oil bypass in the filter mount, or in the oil pump housing. My 1979 Subaru has the bypass inside the oil pump which is also combined with the oil filter mount. My friend's Oldsmobile 5.7 diesel has the bypass in the oil filter mount. Chevy small and big blocks have the bypass in the mount. I've had a Nissan with it in the mount as well.
I use the fram Ultras on my car It's a different model number The filter media looks exactly like the one on the titanium It has that reddish pink color. My models an XG918 it's a cartridge style filter so no can
Did you get tge quickjack to work on your vettes? I'm getting one to work on my corvette.
I did. And I now also use it on all of my cars 😜
The Framboys will not approve this video
Louvers are the worst design , I have sent back many filters after looking down and seeing louvers that were either not stamped all the way through or completely blocked.
I realize this is two year old post, however I don't see anything on how you fixed the ZF6 rattle. Most often these days it's exacerbated by the switch from dual mass to single mass flywheels. Maybe I am missing something, but how did you solve the ZF6 rattle mentioned in the title?
@@ThorinOakenshieldGSD2023 it was caused by imperfect firing and the comprehensive tune up totally fixed it.
@@BRS_DIY Thank you for the reply. Additional question, does your vette have the original dual mass flywheel or an aftermarket single mass flywheel?
@@ThorinOakenshieldGSD2023 original
@@ThorinOakenshieldGSD2023 i've had two C4s with aftermarket flywheels no rattles
@@BRS_DIY Good to know. I replaced mine with a Carolina, was in hurry due to an event coming up (SCCA) and installed it, didn't know about the individual weighting of the dual mass at the time (2012) been regretting that ever since.
Forget about how they are constructed, how well does each one filter small particles of dirt? Looks can be deceiving.
ISO filtration efficiency ratings are talked about for every filter - did you watch the video?
By the condition of the old headliner it looks better
The old headliner was saaaaging!
Just skipped over mobil 1
So I just bought an 89 zf6 car. My "rattle" is so loud it sounds like a damn rod knock. What did you "tune up" to fix this?
There seems to be zero consideration for the length of the filter medium.
Was the engine running during this process?
Yes
Thanks for responding 😊 I noticed with the bypass kit it comes with two caps...I couldn't really tell if you used caps on yours?@@BRS_DIY
@@TheBlkac1 the bypass kit stays on your car permanently, so you cap off where the hose attaches after the flush. Then, 5 years from now, when you want to thorough flush again your C4 is all setup for it!
