Not so Mighty Mule 600 fails again.
I installed this Gates That Open Mighty Mule 600 Pro about 5 years ago and it is nothing but trouble.
The manual says I should be able to cycle this 12' gate over 100 times per day. That just isn't the case. I barely use it. I find myself working on it frequently and manually operating the gate more than with the motor. It always seems to fail when it is cold or raining and I have to get out and manually close the gate anyway. I am hoping for either a permanent fix or that someone will recommend a better gate system.

    The first issue I had with my 372w system was the gates would open and wouldn’t close the gates. I had a control board from a previous system that broke during a wind storm. When I went to remove the control board, I found one of the operator wires on the board was loose. I tightened it and checked the rest of the terminals and voila! It now works perfectly. Check your connections!

    I've been doing this for years using a grade 8 bolt but add a large flat washer under the bolt head and before the lock washer and nut. I'm not risking my expensive Airstream using those cheap locking pins made in china. More people need to know about this better alternative.

    DANGER. High tensile bolts snap from side pressure. Mild steel is safer as they will flex not snap like a carrot.. High tensile is for pulling Metal parts together..only..

    No axle swap, it's the same axle as a f350, just change the hubs, which they sell with the flares on Amazon 😂 I own one, towes 14k so dually is for the 2k pounds of tongue weight the trailer adds to the back. Same as a dually truck, same frame same motor same transmission just a different body.

    FYI hitch pins have a rated shear strength. Graded bolts have a rated tension strength. The two are NOT THE SAME and graded bolts DO NOT HAVE THE SAME SHEAR STRENGTH! Dangerous video

    • @CrowT
      @CrowT 9 месяцев назад

      So you are saying a grade 8 bolt does not have the shear strength capabilities in order to haul a trailer?

    • @The_Ballo
      @The_Ballo 9 месяцев назад

      @@CrowT There are different kinds of strength. A hitch pin is made of softer steel and is designed not to be shared off. Grade 8 bolts are designed not to stretch and are more brittle.

    • @CrowT
      @CrowT 9 месяцев назад

      @@The_Ballo I know the difference between the two. A simple google search says a grade 8 bolt has a tensile strength of 150,000 psi and that is shear strength is 60% of that. I think he will be ok...

    A lot of good recommendations already posted here but I will add that any gate opener is not worth the investment if you're not willing to earn a masters degree from the school of hard knocks in automatic gate opener diagnostics and repair. I'm going on 5 years on my current MM 371. The two prior to it were 12 and 6 years old, both were struck by lightning. I installed a large 10' commercial ground rod near the gate opener and grounded my field fence and tied to the ground on the control board when I installed the current opener. The last one that was struck by lightning, I also lost a fence charger that was connected to the same fence on the other side of the farm approximately 700 feet away. I went to check the fuses on the fence charger and both fuse holders were blown off the circuit board with black arc markings all over the inside of the charger. The speaker/horn on the gate opener was blown out of the circuit board. When the fence charger got hit thats what gave me the idea to ground the fence with a ground rod. Regarding the solar panel, never buy the one from MM. They're under powered and suck. They're not made of glass so if you live in the south the sun will bake that clear resin looking stuff and turn it milky white. I've been using a 25 watt, glass panel from Harbor Freight for 6 years with no issues. My next door neighbor had his father-in-law install a Ghost automatic gate opener and they have had nothing but problems with it (because they know nothing about gate openers). There is a large pot farm about a mile from me and they have a $10,000.00 gate opener on a rolling gate. That thing fails 3-4 times a year and they have to hire a security guard 24 hours a day to sit at the gate until it is repaired. The point I'm making is there is no magic brand that you can buy that will be trouble free.

    Good point, with the added lock nut. Only thing I'd tell this guy is. We don't all have the same needs as you: I agree I'm not to worried about my regular 2" ball getting stolen at home. But I have a combo hitch and when I go camping I have a distribution hitch. It's a pain in the ass to put it anywhere at the campground. So I'd like to secure it to my truck. When I'm away from home, I dont necessarily know what kind of local raggies may be hanging around a downtown I've never been to before. Even some kids who'd just think it's funny and chuck it down a hill, then I'm out $200.

    "I don't know why people love their locking hitch pins so much or why they are worried about the hitch being stolen off the back of their truck". Well, mabye thats because your truck looks like trash, so people assume you don't have anything worth stealing. Or maybe it's because most people care about safety enough that they don't buy junk like your hitch. My 20,000# hitch cost over $400. If you think someone won't steal that, you aren't very bright. Also, many people need to swap their hitch out occasionally for to use a pintle hitch or WD hitch so a bolt isn't the best option. And, finally, many lock pins are Class V, and you can't cut through that any quicker than your bolt. HTF do you not know this? Guess you aren't as smart as your think, huh? I mean, honestly...do you really think you are the first one to think about using a bolt, lol? I think you can't afford a good hitch, so you are just jealous of those that can. A class V lock pin from Curt rated for over 20000# is about $15, lol. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007LVJ2A/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1.

    I think the concern is more with expensive hitches like a weigh safe or a b+w tow and stow. A $50 curt isn't as big of a loss as a $350+ hitch. I like the top link pin idea, though. Some good recommendations are given here and I'll admit that I hadn't considered the bolt. I just wish I knew the shear-strength of each bolt grade by size. I don't want my bolt shearing off while towing with my 3/4 ton.
