Sprouting Strings
Добавлен 13 янв 2012
Suzuki violin teacher, cat enthusiast, tea lover.
I teach Suzuki violin and fiddle on Vancouver Island, but I use this channel to give my students an easy way to listen to fiddle tunes as I teach them in our lessons. Through this, I hope to help a new generation of musicians carry on the tradition of learning by ear.
FAQ: where can I find sheet music?
I find a lot of my music on thesession.com, 8notes.com, and musescore. The Fiddler's Fakebook is excellent, as is the Fiddleworks series by Zav RT. The majority of my fiddle repertoire was learned through weekly attendance at a local fiddle jam.
FAQ: why don't you show your fingers more clearly?
I run my channel casually as I teach classical/Suzuki violin full time and film everything quickly on my phone. It's partially purposeful - I want my students to learn by ear, not by finger number. I provide them with sheet music but encourage them to use their ear training as much as possible.

Very beautiful :)

Lindo!! Pode passar a partitura dele?
Nice - always great to see people spreading Olitunes about! I'd be curious to learn where you heard that Horseshoes and Rainbows is an old Irish tune...
I had a vague memory of being told it was an Oliver Schroer tune but in the interest of giving accurate info here I asked some colleagues more recently... who were clearly misinformed :P Thanks for confirming my suspicions!
do you have the sheet music for the second version you play? My daughter has learned a simpler version, but we'd really like this one.
Nationwide is on your side.
Hello and thank you all the way from Nova Scotia! Recently found the channel and have found the lessons really helpful - so a big thanks to you. Would love to see more Irish Tunes from the Slieve Luachra area ☘️
This was perfect for getting me in the Christmas spirit! Lovely playing as always :D
Ooh yea, I can use some of this, thanks.
So easy to follow, thanks.
NORWAY!?!?!!? Loool ffs It's Swedish, and it's WELL known!! freakkin norweigans havent made a song since.... for ever...
Hey, thanks for the correction! Always ready to learn new things. All the living norsk fiddle composers might beg to differ on that last bit though ;)
Grand Sprouting Strings! 😄 Great Grandpa Frank lived in County Donegal.
Awesome love it
That's nice tune. Can you please provide sheet music link so we can practice also. Thanks
Hi there! I run this channel casually for my own students and don't provide sheet music to the public, but you can find a version of it at thesession.org
@@Sproutingstrings Thank you 😊
Well done on the lovely music 🎵
Perhaps the Scots snap IS best illustrated by the frog noise, because the emphasis is on the short note at the beginning.
just great, and "rivet" vs "doggie" it seems they both accent the first syllable. Is there another word that can depict the Scots snap?
nice job😀
I am trying to play this tune ! Thanks !
This tune is very similar to Äppelbo gånglåt -- ruclips.net/video/Y3YJxomHoZ8/видео.html [ "gång" is "walking/going" and "låt" is "tune" and "bo" is "place". ] The tune is often heard at every Swedish "midsommar" festival -- a Sunday nearest to the longest day of the year. Its tempo is perfect for a long parade of celebrants. Note that this Swedish recording credits "Producer: Benny Andersson" -- you may know Benny as one of the "B" boys in ABBA. 🙂
"Efter" is used to name the person who is the "tradition-bearer" for the tune; the one whose notes, rhythm, and style should be copied, in contrast to using "av" to name the author of the tune.
From the WikiPedia page for Lofoten: Lofoten is an archipelago and a traditional district in the Norwegian county of Nordland. The name Lofoten comes from the Old Norse word Lófótr, which was the original name of the island Vestvågøya. The first element of the name is ló, meaning "lynx", and the last element is derived from Norse fótr, meaning "foot", as the shape of the island must have been compared with that of a lynx's foot. [The suffix "en" is like the English-language prefix of "the".]
I love this song. I believe its on Bothy Band After hours.
what are the chords/ notes?? this is beautiful btw
Your method of showing someone how to play a fiddle tune by ear is exceptional! Great choice of tune!

Thanks! I see that you have done three other videos about this tune. A lively marching tune of the Scottish Highlanders. 🌻
I mean my relative is the one who did it a long time ago
