Conversation About My Signature Fitting Method - A Pathway for Growth
Просмотров 52921 день назад
While fitting is the foundation to making successful garments, my goal as a teacher is always to empower my students to take their garment sewing as far as they can. The best thing ever for me is to hear from students who are exploring their creativity. I recently had the opportunity to talk with Steph, who has studied with me periodically. YOUR sewing journey can also be productive and creativ...
Conversation About Purposeful Sewing & Finding Your Style - Part 2
Просмотров 2664 месяца назад
For many of us, our goal is to be comfortable in our clothes as well as have our clothes convey what we want them to about who we are. In this second conversation with my friend and student Nancy Tafoya, we continue to discuss how to go about finding your style. We talk about quite a number of concrete things you can do to help you in your journey. Because our style is always evolving to some g...
Conversation About Purposeful Sewing & Finding Your Style - Part 1
Просмотров 3714 месяца назад
When we find our lives changing, we often realize that we want to wear different clothing. For instance, you might be transitioning from being a college student to working in an office setting. Or transitioning from being a working woman to being a mother. Or changing career paths. Or becoming an empty nester. Or entering retirement. Or experiencing a change in marital status. Finding our way t...
Controlling Seam Allowances and Facings
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Год назад
I have always loved sitting down to the machine and constructing a garment. Part my enjoyment comes from knowing that little decisions like pressing the seams open or to one side can make a big difference. Similarly, I still get a thrill from making a facing, because doing all the little steps (which I explain), the facing folds into place practically on its own and is always well behaved. Thes...
Sewing an Uneven Mitered Corner & When to Use It in Your Garments
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.Год назад
A student asked me how to finish a bell sleeve with a deep slit in the middle of the sleeve: • Should the hem be turned up and then the split sleeve seam allowance turned over on top? Or the other way around: • Should the split sleeve seam allowance be turned over and then the hem turned up on top? Rather than either of these two options, I suggested making a mitered corner, because it would re...
What to Do With Unsuccessful Garments
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Год назад
Every garment sewer I know at least occasionally makes a piece of clothing that doesn't quite work, or doesn't work at all. What do you do with these unsuccessful garments? Over the years, I've discovered that I can learn a lot from these "misses," and sometimes I learn way more from garments that don't work than from garments that do work. In this video, I first discuss how diverse our taste i...
Conversation About Master Patterns
Просмотров 970Год назад
I often recommend concentrating on getting a basic pattern - blouse (bodice), skirt, pants - to fit so you have what I refer to as a "master pattern." You can use a master pattern in two ways: you can design garment variations from it, and you can use it to alter a commercial pattern. In this "Conversation About Master Patterns," Kris Haight and I explore both of these avenues of using a master...
Conversation About Fitting
Просмотров 972Год назад
For many garment sewers, getting the fit you want can be problematic - perhaps time consuming and frustrating, and sometimes difficult enough that you consider abandoning garment sewing altogether. Yet, it's a goal well worth working towards and achieving, because the payoff is that you can focus on garment design, fabric selection, and construction. In this "Conversation About Fitting," Kris H...
Conversation about Design
Просмотров 820Год назад
Many of us who have a passion for garment sewing do not think of ourselves as designers, and we even doubt that we have the skills to design. In this video, my student Kris Haight and I delve into the topic of design: • We explore why the thought of designing for ourselves might feel overwhelming. • We acknowledge that as soon as you select a pattern and fabric, you are actually designing. • We...
Fitting a Gaping Front Neckline
Просмотров 5 тыс.Год назад
Gaping in the front neckline is quite common. Sometimes it's a significant amount, but sometimes it's subtle. The method I explain in this video lets me assess what is causing the gaping is the figure simply narrow across the front, or is the figure narrow AND needs more bust shaping. Approaching gaping front necklines as I do might take a tad longer, but it works like a charm. I am happy to pa...
How to Choose a Knit Bodice Pattern Size
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Год назад
Deciding on a knit bodice pattern size is a different process than for a woven bodice because the majority of knits have some amount of give / stretch in the cross grain. (If your knit is completely stable in the cross grain, you can proceed with a woven pattern.) In this video, I explain the basics of how I select a pattern size for a knit to get an "every day" fit neither oversized nor form-f...
Working with Large Print Motifs: T-shirt
Просмотров 578Год назад
There are a lot of things I think about when I work with a fabric that has a large print. In this video, I show you my thought process about the placement of the floral motif both before and as I lay out the pattern pieces. I also give tips on pinning and cutting out the pattern. This example is for a darted knit tee, but the process is very similar for a woven fabric.
An Encounter with Sewing Frustration
Просмотров 728Год назад
Even with all the sewing experience I have and successful garments I have made, I occasionally have frustrating experiences. Some projects don't turn out well, and in fact, I'll never wear the garment I discuss in this video. But I sure can learn from an experience like this by thinking about why it happened, how I deal with this kind of sewing frustration, and how I get myself sewing again. Vi...
How to Choose a Woven Sleeve Pattern Size
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.2 года назад
Sleeves can be quite problematic, because our arms don't necessarily match the proportions a pattern company uses, or be in exact proportion with the rest of our body. For this reason, I always assess a sleeve pattern and adjust it to reflect the arm measurements of the person I'm fitting. Even if the sleeve needs some fine-tuning, it's great to have an appropriate amount of bicep circumference...

Pintucks in the front ( when possible) are wonderful for blouses to lie flat at the neckline. Also one cm wedge at the shoulder seam. Thank you for the video!🙏💙👍🏼🇵🇷🗽

I learned so much from listening to this conversation. A few of my takeaways were: Photos allow you to see a larger depth of field - creates the standback view that we often don't take when we have our eyes on the garment we are sewing... I appreciated Nancy’s point of view re: “image” and “dress” , as well as how change of life circumstance leads us to rethink how we feel and want to be seen. I hope to incorporate this question when I start a project - "What would you be asking if you were sewing for someone else..."

I really appreciate your video! Thank you for showing your assessment method, along with the garments you made that didn't work for you, and also your calculations for how long it would take to alter them. Sewing is a hobby for me, and I am often critical of myself for how long my alterations take, so it's reassuring to know that they can in fact take considerable time even for pros. It is also good to know that you sometimes decide that some alterations are just not worth either the time, or that the type of fabric won't yield the desired results. I so appreciate the reality check! :)

I've also learned that I look better wearing princess lines.

I’m a little late in catching this “lecture” but it was so fascinating. Agree with others, your video presentation was perfect. I’m a beginner but this video really helped me in understanding seam finishes. Your advice on finishing a seam based on what the fabric wants to do is a real game changer. Love the use of your butterfly seam finishes. I will now embrace the fact my “me-made” clothes will appear quite different on the inside and not keep trying mirror RTW clothing. Looking forward to viewing future lectures in 2024.

I agree with you about looking at garments for their details. The garment may not be me but I can see how I could use one or two of the details and adapt them to a garment I want to make. Thank you for going through the assessment of your finished garments. I like your idea of keeping swatches of the fabric you used with the pattern and noting the type of fabric, interfacings, facings, zipper placement, etc. and what you liked or didn't like about it and what you would change next time.

Very educational. I have that same pattern and have always had to make changes because my bust measurement aligns with a 14 but my hip measurement is a 16. My waist measures 35 so I'm in-between sizes. Blending is always a must for me but I live with it. I learned something new from your video and that was reducing the hip size from the outside of the lines which I would have never thought to do. Thank you!
