109 - Remembering your loved one is normal
Sometimes we are surprised when simple things remind us of our loved one. And remind us of our loss.
But what if these moments aren’t because something is wrong with us (I mean other than the main thing that’s wrong.)
The answer to these sudden reminders is that there isn’t anything wrong with us. There isn’t anything to fix. There isn’t anything broken with our response, just with our heart.

108 - Taking a break doesn’t mean your grief is over.
Просмотров 795 месяцев назад
Even when a death is recent, sometimes people take a break from crying. Sometimes people laugh. These “breaks” don’t mean, however, that grief is over. That we are “all better.” Far from it. We aren’t disappointing anyone if we have a break from the hard work of grief. We are surviving. And if anyone says, “I’m glad that you are laughing, you must be all better” instead of punching them, send t...

106 - It's okay that you can't think right now.
Просмотров 1166 месяцев назад
Almost every time I’m in a room after a death (I’m a hospital chaplain), someone will talk about not being able to think clearly. A name will disappear from their memory, a story will lose its way. In today’s episode we’ll talk a little about that. And I read from my book, This is Hard, what I say to people who can’t think. (It’s understandable). And, true confession, this episode is a week lat...
105 - A working list for life after a difficult diagnosis.
Просмотров 887 месяцев назад
A few years back, a friend got a difficult diagnosis in her family. She reached out to see if I had any suggestions of what might be helpful to her family. Though we know that death is inevitable, at these moments we realize that it’s nearer than expected. This episode isn’t about giving up. Instead, I want to talk about the kinds of things to pay attention to when living with the reality of dy...

The Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement has been guiding how I help people for more than a year. In this podcast, I describe the model and talk about why it’s helpful. If you are looking for a way to describe what is going on in the days and weeks and lifetime after a death, this grief model is a place to start. Mentioned in this episode References for the Dual Process Model of Coping...
103 - What I learned when I asked what grieving people found helpful
Просмотров 827 месяцев назад
In August, 2022, I created a survey for people who had lost a loved one. I asked four core questions about their experience after a death: what they found helpful in 1) what people said or 2) did or 3) gave in grief support materials, and 4) what people wish someone had said or done. I asked for demographics about their loved one and about them. Today I'm talking about what I learned. Mentioned...
102 - I hope this is a good time to talk about timing.
Просмотров 527 месяцев назад
It’s time to talk about timing. Finding words in hard times means paying attention to time and timing. I talk about my history in rhetoric, about Jesus being great with timing in conversations about loss, and my idea of seconds, minutes, days, weeks, months, years, lifetimes. Make some tea or some coffee and let's get started. Mentioned in this episode. The book. This Is Hard: What I Say When L...

My pastor just called and ask me to moderate a funeral service sunday coming and I'm worried I might messed up. Sigh.

I understand. I led a service today for someone I'd never met, after having met one family member once at the hospital. What helped was reminding myself to be helpful. Not perfect, but helpful to the people I knew who were grieving. Starting with that focus always helps me help them.

Thanks Jon for this. It is such an important thing to help us be sensitive to others when going through grief or whatever difficult circumstance. Just today I was able to share these very words with a loved one going through the loss of his father. I said, "this is really hard, isn't it'? He replied, "yes it was." Thanks for your wise counsel!

Thanks for the energy you have put into this podcast. It feels (for me) like sitting down and having a conversation with an old friend, which we have done many times in the past. Currently I have several close friends who are walking the journey of serious health issues that unless God sends a miracle they will fairly soon be breathing heavenly air. I'm just "walking them home" trying to be the best encouragement that I can but wanting to do it with an open mind and heart. And that my friendship along the journey will bring them help and please God. Thank you for your friendship and your help.

U are right. The more we seek to still and quiet our soul. We will more readily hear from God. However, you never said HOW to do it. In the church today. I believe we love high thoughts for ideas, but we lack application. We lack practicality. We hear at least 52 sermons a year, but we lack application. We must do the word and teach others to do the word. My friend, I ask you. How do we do this? How can we put this concept/principle into practice?
