Matt and Shannon Heaton - Lao Dueng Duen (By the Light of the Full Moon)
I met Boston-based husband-and-wife duo Matt & Shannon Heaton in Montpelier Vermont. They kindly agreed to perform for 50 American Stories. The duo performs updated and traditional Irish music on flute/guitar/bouzouki/accordion. Here, Matt and Shannon perform a song from a different tradition. Shannon learned Lao Dueng Duen (By the Light of the Full Moon), a traditional Thai melody, while studying abroad in Thailand.

Anais Mitchell Wedding Song

This is such a brilliant clip of Anais when she was younger. Pure talent.
I got no idea how to write the picking but it's strings E and D for the bass part on the down and upbeats. This doesn't change except for E isn't actually played except for before the start of a new measure. I'll list it in parentheses. (You can see Anais go for it, but not actually pick it). The melody is on the sixteenth notes (ee and a if that makes sense to you). Anyway, fingerpick E---D---(E)-G-D-e-(E)-G-D-B-(E)-G-D-e- repeat. This is said with love of her music, not to take anyone away from it. I want to figure out how to play as much of the album as I can since it's the single most moving album I've ever heard.
The “bum bum bum” made me smile so much. To think it went from a little tune sung by itself, to a vital piano piece in the final cut is really cool to me. Also makes me feel a bit better about my similar approach of pretending I’m a guitar whenever I’m mapping out a new song <3
É A PATROA
A criadora de hadestown ❤️ Pom pom pom
This is maybe the most beautiful song for me... Especially if you know what happens next in the story.
So outstanding
2020 Anybody?

:) I love how this song stayed the most untouched throughout the years. It's really beautiful.
I disagree, you should see Why Do We Build the Wall
@@Amayagma Also "Hey Little Songbird" and "Flowers" are almost the same in all versions
@@MKUriOrbach ye!
How could anyone give this a thumbs down ?? Incredible !
Great playing, but the guitar is a bit on top of the low whistle, too close to the mic. Enjoy'ed it tho. Pat
Nice
เพราะไปอีกแบบครับ
I love the album version, but this gives me chills.
Awesome! Very good... I´m dancing on my chair!
เพราะมากครับ
A M A Z I N G !!! Such a good voice to hear all the time !!
capo the 7th fret use E maj, G maj and A maj. open chords
Why even compare with Gaga?
Charlie Winston knows his stuff :D
That whistle give me goose bumps. Takes me away. Thnks
incredible
perfect woman!
Let's not pit performers-especially ones with completely different styles-needlessly against each other. I recently discovered "Hadestown" and had my heart beautifully broken and fell in love with Anais Mitchell, but I'll gladly put "Born This Way" in rotation alongside it.
sounds like shes on helium,in a really beautiful way. ive always felt that was an under used vocal trick. kinda like dean ween
i don't think she's on helium though....if you do try it, stay safe
@superfluousness321 said what? i wanna try it out(not on you, that would be to obvious). im getting a little too old to be single :)
I am Thai and I'm amazed. This is incredible :D
I'm Thai. ร้องเพลงและเล่นดนตรี เพลงลาวดวงเดือน ได้เพราะมากครับ ประทับใจ ที่สุด
Great ! You sing so impressively in Thai language. This is an Old Thai song well loved by all Thais. Although there is a word "lao" in this song title, it is just a word dedicated to composer's loved girl who is Lanna princess. Central Thais call Northern Thais or Lanna Thais as Lao. Thai prince named Phichai Mahintarodom composed this song for over 100 years ago. But, about 50 years ago, Laos people copy this melody and changed lyric from Thai to Lao and named this new song as "Duang Jampa".
If a guy said that to me I'd totally marry him even when none of that happened. Move over Eurydice :)
Beautiful voice -- beautiful chesterfield too!!
Her voice is amazing
Sounds to me like the 3 chords are B major, A major + Eb (dunno what chord this is!), E major.
LOL! Come to Boston! We'll learn you at Berklee!
I THINK these are the following chords (the letters refer to the major chords in the open positions if there was no capo) capo 7th fret. intro: E for a bit verse part 1 (Eurydice): EEEEGEGA verse part 2 (Orpheus): EEEEGE EEEE EEGA bum-bum-bit EEEE EEEE EEEEGA anyone help with the picking?
I WISH someone would add the picking. Been sitting here getting a headache trying to figure it out
i dont know how many times i just watched this video, but it was a lot. she is amazing! i am going to see her sing monday night!
soo crushable...she's a total love.
i neeeeeeeeeeed a guitar tab for this, help!

Terrific lyrics!
I love Anais, I love Hadestown and I love this song!!!!!
"Lao Duang Duen" certainly a composition by a Siamese composer, Prince Phichai Mahintarodom (1884-1909). It was dedicated to a princess in Chiang Mai (northern Thailand), as in the early 20th century the Siamese also referred to the northern Thai (Lanna) people as "Lao."
Sorry, that's not correct. "Lao Duang Duen" was composed by the Siamese Prince Phichai Mahintarodom (1884-1909). It is Lao in name only, as in that time period Siamese classical music drew on many "foreign accents" such as Khmer, Lao, Khaek (Indian/Malay), etc., yet the compositions were by Siamese composers. Like many Thai classical pieces, it was eventually also adopted by musicians in Laos.
omg i got the album!!!! its soooooo amazing!!!!
Album releases 3/9/10. Can't wait.
Excellent! The Heatons are brilluiant musicians and lovely people. I wish they'd come to the West Coast more often.
