Mascagni's Guglielmo Ratcliff Intermezzo
Guglielmo Ratcliff is an Opera by Pietro Mascagni in four acts, it fell out of favor with the modern operatic repertoire due mostly to the fact that Mascagni was well known for his opera Cavalleria Rusticana, this combined with the fact that this particular opera contained one of the most difficult tenor roles ever put to the operatic stage, makes it rather obscure nowadays.

Gianna Galli Aldo Bottion Leoncavallo Gli Zingari (1975)
This is a rare performance of a largely unknown opera, Gli Zingari, by Ruggiero Leoncavallo. Leoncavallo was largely known for Pagliacci, which was his only famous opera, he however composed many more obscure operas, one of these is featured here. There is no English libretto for this opera as far as I am aware of, and the only pdf in existence that I know of is in Italian. Gianna Galli- Fleana...

Fantastico!
Giuseppe Sinopoli. My beloved Maestro !
Absolutely one of the best Scarpias❤
This work was in the Raging. Bull when LaMotta won the Middleweight title against Frenchman. Cerdan.
Perfect.
what orchestra is playing this ?
I loved how Scorsese used this music in Raging Bull
HERMOSA OPERA GRACIAS
I love his voice. He had excellent technique... His voice lasted . And it was huge !
Absolutely thrilling. And not a trace of the "MacNeil wobble" that so characterized his voice after about 1965.
That's unfair and inaccurate. Yes, he would have some problems, and there could be a wobble later, but I heard many great performances after '65 wobble free.
Mah!.
Sublime !
Superb! I understand why it is some people's favourite. But I still favour Tito Gobbi as keeping a perfect balance between the forceful personality and the beauty of the music.
My favorite musically is Cornell MacNeil
There is a video of MacNeil and Gobbi working together on the role. In a later interview, MacNeil was obviously moved at the mention of his mentor, who had passed away, still relatively young.
@@rosemaryallen2128 indeed, I have seen this video
Sublime baritono
Opera Rara has recently posted an excellent new recording of this beautiful opera which is the first to use the complete original 1912 version of the opera. All other recordings and performances use a cut and revised version. The original is superior and should be heard by anyone who cares about this opera. The plot is weak, but the music is beautiful.
Nah. Im way better than this imposter
Bravo!
Bravo!
Che delizia ! Che perfezione ! Che magnificenza ! Brividi... 👍👏
probably the best Te Deum in my opinion
:O)!
Spectacular film - try to find the whole thing, it's wonderful!
It’s terrific
There is not a single frame that was not done on purpose in this film, listen to the rustling sound of Tosca's skirts!
It was a “Live from the Met” broadcast.
Enlightening

While not popular, this beautiful opera has been revived several times since 1963 and several performances are available on RUclips and CD, although all available performances are heavily cut. The most satisfying is a 1963 concert performance from RAI Rome which has been available for many years. Ratcliff remained Mascagni's own favorite of his 16 stage works, although he considered Parisina his greatest achievement.
This performance was released on LP on the MRF label in the late 70's with a complete libretto and translation. The opera was composed in 1912 and is based on the same story by Pushkin that was also the basis for Rachmaninoff's 1893 opera Aleko. This performance and the current published score are of the slightly cut version of the opera made by the composer after its London premiere. (Leoncavallo recycled some music for this opera from passages he had cut in 1910 from Zaza.)
I’ll see if I can get ahold of a physical copy, thank you for the info!
@@whovian1591 There are at least three other complete recordings. Avoid the most recent recording with Denia Mazzola: she's horrible.
@@remomazzetti8757 ah, I see, unfortunately that’s the quality of singers nowadays
@@whovian1591 The MRF libretto is of the slightly longer original 1912 version so it's easy to see where the composer made small cuts.

The greatest Baritone, I saw the 1978 performance of Tosca, MacNeil was a great singer!
He seams to be in the very bad shape hear. One of the greatest singers of all times though!
I thought he was good in this performance, but I agree, his voice had gotten a tiny bit tired
@@whovian1591 This performance I saw live he was good, over 60 The 1978 was better with Pavarotti! I still believe he’s the greatest Scarpia! He so musical!

Not as good as Scipio Colombo.
