Seed Table Talks Episode 2 #Cucurbits Part One 26 January 2025 #cucurbitaceae #seeds
Let's talk seeds! 😁💜✨
This is the second episode in my new gardening series titled "Seed Table Talks" (2025). The purpose is not only to play with my seeds (because we all love to talk seeds) 😁😉 but also to brainstorm plans for my 2025 garden and what I might plant. Technically this is the second round of of narrowing down my seeds. The first round resulted in what I show you in each episode. Some seeds are new, some old, and some are ones I've harvested.
This episode however does NOT include any seeds I've harvested. Those will be included in the next round of decisions. In this episode I discuss Cucurbits - which I didn't know includes melons so those will be in the second part - such as...

Blue Worm Bin Post Pie Day 21 Check-In 12 January 2025 #vermicomposting #vermicompost

Here is the final video for the 20/21 day check-ins for the "Time for Pie" series, dated 11-12 January 2025. Bin 1 was actually the only bin to be checked in on the 11th. This bin is looking great. I fed them again on the 3rd of January because I wanted to warm the bin up, add more moisture, and because I believe this young and small population can handle it. Was I right? How is the pie coming ...

Here is the fourth video for the 20/21 day check-ins for the "Time for Pie" series, dated 11-12 January 2025. Bin 1 was actually the only bin to be checked on on the 11th. This bin, Bin 4, turned out to have quite the "moisture" issue last time we checked on it. So I needed to see during this visit if things are looking better. Also this bin needs to be moved towards harvesting. I'd love to hea...

Let's talk seeds!!! 😁🙋‍♀️💜 So I have a question, something I asked you in the first episode of the Seed Table talks: do you think "blue" flowers are really blue? I grew the black beauty zucchini last year, and the plants were HUGE. I have 30" wide beds with 30" wide paths, and they blocked the paths on both sides and stole a little space from the other beds, too. I'll definitely be growing them again. I might try staking or caging them to grow them upright instead of sprawling on the ground. They produced way more than I could eat, but I dehydrated what I couldn't sell or give away and made powder for the worms. I'm a big fan of the Waltham Butternut (partly for the long storage) but would like to try the Honeynut. Just started looking at seeds and getting excited for the coming season. I have a habit of biting off more than I can chew when it comes to gardening. Space isn't really an issue, but time and energy are. Hopefully, all the fall prep makes this years start easy enough that I don't burn out so early. Not as spunky as I was 20 yrs ago. Have to play it smarter. Planning to fucus more on what I know works this year. Not that I won't still experiment, and grow some fun stuff. Cucumbers have been hit or miss for me over the years with the cucumber beetles. A few years ago, Johnnie's seeds sent me a pack of "Supremo" cucumber seeds as a substitute for the pickling cucumbers I had ordered. They have been producing great and haven't had issues with disease or beetles, even when varieties they are planted next to are being wiped out. Could be just luck, but I'm going to stick with them until that luck runs out. They stay sweet and the seeds are soft even when fruits a bit oversized. So long as you keep them watered. Guess I'm back to rambling on. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.😊

      Good to know the plants get that big! Those sound massive. That sounds like a good idea to cage them. How many plants did you grow? I only got one tiny Waltham Butternut last year (the plant was stunted by groundhogs) and it's still on my counter. I'm excited for you to be looking at seeds. I know I'm going to be looking at them for a while before I settle in on exactly what I'll grow. (Honestly, I don't think I'm all that settled until I dropped the seeds in soil! 😂) I find it really really hard not to bite off more than I can chew. I also find it hard to make a plan and stick to it. Fingers crossed I can this year! 😁🤔 That's awesome that space isn't an issue for you. But you make a good point about time and energy. I have to remind myself about all the other parts of gardening when I want to plant something everywhere. How are you going to water that? How are you going to tend to that? Do you really want to fuss with one more bed? Yes! I mean, I'll think about it. Cucumber beetles are terrible! Last year I know they spread the disease that ruined my crop all together. This year I still had them but the Sumter cucumber did very well despite them. Wow that is awesome "Supremo" didn't have any trouble though others did. I'll keep my eye open for that variety. Are they a pickling type? I enjoy your "rambling", you have a lot of great gardening experience. It would seem our gardening approaches aren't too far off. Thanks so much for watching and sharing with me. Have a great week! 🙋‍♀️💜

      @theelpydimension They are a pickling variety. They get large enough to be a decent slicer, but I like them smaller as a snack. That was my first year growing zucchini, and they were grown in the same bed that had the Jalapeño bushes. Started with 4 plants, and the wind took 1 out. One plant would be enough if it survives and produces. I was really surprised at how long they kept giving fruit. I added aged chicken litter to three of my beds last year (that was one of them), and I "think" it was a bit much according to the information I've found recently. Like 4x as much as it should have been. Kind of surprised it didn't burn them. Plants in those beds grew much larger than usual and produced a ton of fruit but less flavourful than usual. Still not sure if it was all the nitrogen or all the rain that "watered down" the flavor, or maybe something else. I think we already talked about this. 🤔 Should be interesting to see what happens in those beds this year, and see if the zucchini grows as big in a different place. Okay 👋

    Do you have soil in the bin. Canadian Nightcrawlers are anecic and live in soil. They eat soil and leaf litter. They do come to the top, but also burrow quite deep in the wild. Up to 6.5 feet, from what I've read. Composting worms are epigeic and actually live in and eat the leaf litter, they don't burrow down into the soil like the Canadian Nightcrawlers do. I don't think I'd worry too much about a few of them on top, but if there isn't soil in the bin, you might want to consider adding some.

    • @theelpydimension
      @theelpydimension 14 часов назад

      Yes I have some soil in the bin though it needs more which I will be adding soon. I should probably add even more soil than I was originally planning based on that fact that they're anecic. Thanks for sharing that with me, I'll put more focus on adding more soil. Take care! 🙋‍♀️💜

    As much as I'm not a fan of summer squash types, I'm one of those who really loves winter squash. Butternut has been a favorite for decades, but the taste & texture of honeynut just can't be beat. I have way too many winter squash varieties LOL. The 1st time I ordered baker creek seeds, I was so annoyed that half of them came in the generic packet designs, I'm a sucker for a good presentation, & their mostly black seed packets are pretty iconic. I have since ordered from baker creek multiple times, & I have never gotten another of those plain packets, so they must have received my complaint via telepathy LOL

    • @theelpydimension
      @theelpydimension 14 часов назад

      Yes so you know about the Honeynut. Any advice on growing them? I have way too many.... nope, you can never have TOO many seeds. 😂 (Okay maybe you can.) Do you grow many of them vertically? Those generic Baker Creek packs are the worst. What makes them use those at all I wonder? I'll be sharing it in another Seed Table Talk but one of my recent seed purchases says overpacked due to low germination on the back where the date is stamped. I've never seen that before. I'm glad they receive your telepathic message. I didn't get any of those packs this time either. 😁 Thanks for stopping by. Have a good week! 🙋‍♀️💜

      @keyphabenyisrael3219 11 часов назад

      @@theelpydimension The honeynut grew well for me years ago on a trellis, but the problem was that they were so visible to the tree rats, that they ended up taking ALL of them before they had turned orange. It was so infuriating finding the husks littered throughout the yard when it came time to rake leaves LOL. I have the best luck with my squash & melons letting them sprawl onto the ground in areas where they can set roots along the way. The squirrels don't bother my melon/pumpkin patches that much.

    Hi Elpy. I'm looking forward to a video. Haven't seen anyone using Canadian Nightcrawlers for composting or castings production, but found some videos about raising them. The one I just watched they started with a pretty full bin since they like to burrow deep. Looked to be about the same size tote. Also had some soil layered in. Think they'll like the cooler temps in your basement. Lot's of questions you'll probably talk about later, so I'll wait. Fun 😊

    • @theelpydimension
      @theelpydimension 14 часов назад

      Hello! 🙋‍♀️ Good to see you. I'd honestly have to say my main reason for raising these guys is just for the experience! Lol. Assuming they thrive and breed (albeit slower) I will give some to my guy for his turtle. But it will definitely be interesting to see just how fast or slow they compost and breed. Yes I saw that as well, that people start with deeper bins. I'm going to add more soil today and check the moisture level. So far some of them hang out on top around the edge especially. I'm a little nervous as to how they handle disturbance in the bin; I'll find out soon enough! Lol. So many questions going forward for sure. Thanks for watching and chatting. Take care! 🙋‍♀️💜

      Hello and thank you. 🙋‍♀️ The best answer I believe and has been shown in some studies, is for communication, as well perhaps as to influence behavior such as movement. A lot of people say it's due to unfavorable conditions, lack of food, and/or protection from predators. However I am glad for the people doing the studies that it's also communication because I've found the invasive Asian Jumping worms outdoors are often found together. Inside, as you see in this video and others the worms frequently congregate in feeding zones. I do not believe they're all grouped together because of an unfavorable environment. Too, they need to make contact with each other to reproduce so... With that said however, I just bought Canadian Nightcrawlers today. They were at a big box store in a refrigerator in small cups. The cups say there's 18 worms; I bought 4 cups with 17-20 worms each. In every cup the worms were all bundled together at the bottom, though there were some worms on top in a few cups. I do believe those are very unfavorable conditions for the worms. Perhaps the correlation with bundling together is still for communication reasons. Thanks so much for stopping by and asking that question. Take care. 🙋‍♀️💜

      I knew you'd enjoy this too. Seed discussions can be never-ending... I recorded a few others but they're both 40 minutes and I'm not sure that I should always talk THAT MUCH. 🤔😁 I was quite happy to have found your seed discussion as well. I haven't checked to see if you've published your pepper talk yet. Mine will be one of the last, peppers and tomatoes because there's a lot to talk about there! 😁😁 Good to see you, thanks for commenting and watching.🙋‍♀️💜

    Nice haul! I also try to only grow edible flowers, but I made an exception for milkweed (that I can't ever seem to grow to the point where they flower) & last season I tried growing some foxgloves that fizzled out, so I may try that again since I have a spot off to the side that I don't have to worry about the toxicity. I remember at one point mistakenly thinking amaranth & celosia were different names for the same thing since both have cool looking edible plumy type flowers LOL

    • @theelpydimension
      @theelpydimension 8 дней назад

      Thank you! While I was frustrated when the package appeared to get lost in the mail, I was grateful that all that extra time between ordering and receiving helped me to forget what all I'd bought. 😂 When my flowers finally bloom, it's like I get it all over again and then I vow to grow more then next year, over and over every year. 😉 Nature grows Milkweed for me, in places however I need to mow. Lol. I didn't know it but Our Georgia Suburban Homestead made a video about eating/cooking milkweed pods 😯 so yeah so much for non-edibles! 😁 Yes the Foxglove are very nice. I really didn't want to pull them since they grow so readily but mixed in with my greens wasn't so good. If you want a lot of them definitely go for it! I hope they grow well where you want them. It always amazes me how many plants have different names, like Amaranth and Callaloo. But I was also confused as a young adult when I first moved into the city how many streets had multiple names. I like plants have different names better. Have you ever consumed/used Celosia? You're right they both have cool plumy flowers! Thanks for watching and sharing with me! I'm going to record another tonight. I can't get to the peppers soon enough. 😉 But I probably shouldn't go for 40 minutes for every episode but Lord knows I will talk that much! I promise you peppers and tomatoes will have to be two part each or at least long! Take care and stay warm! 💜🙋‍♀️

      @@theelpydimension Sweet peppers are one of the main things I like to grow indoors over the winter to get a jump on the upcoming season. Last year the aphids & spider mites ruined my pepper plants & I had to start them all at the same time as the okra/eggplant/tomato plants in March, but this year a couple of the 10 I'm growing are mature & flowering, so I should have some fruit by March. I had extra plants I put in the coco coir potting mix I made as an experiment, & those are doing pretty well after a rocky start. I have 10 yellow/orange/red bell pepper varieties. The last poblano seed I had limped along for months. It's finally getting bigger & healthy, so I'm pretty excited about that. I had purchased poblano peppers from MIgardener that ended up being shishito peppers LOL. I haven't grown any celosia. The amaranth I grew years ago made so many seeds I get dozens of volunteers in the garden every year now (same with chamomile, dill & sunflowers).

      Oh my gosh that's awesome! You have a major jump on the pepper season. Good for you! 👏👏 You must have a nice operation to keep them all that happy. Gosh I've had aphids on plants in my Aerogardens before - no idea how they got there though I have my suspicions now - and that was terrible. I believe I also had thrips. Indoor pests certainly are just as devastating as those outdoors. I've actually also been fighting mealy bugs on one of my orchids. But dang that is very cool, good for you. I was lucky enough not to be effected during the great "PepperGate" of what was it 2023. That was a mess no doubt. At least they were very obviously not the right peppers in your case! I bought a lot of seeds from Jimmy Pickles at the end of 2023 when he had a huge sale. He sent a bunch of freebies along with them so I've had a bit of a surplus of options. (Not that that has stopped me from getting peppers but... he was not part of the "PepperGate" crowd.) 2024 was my first year with Chamomile so I should have some popping up around the yard. I have all that pea gravel so we'll see just how much they volunteer out there but I would like a few of those. Last year I transplanted a bunch of Amaranth volunteers and created a nice privacy fence of sorts. I believe we've talked about Amaranth volunteers before. I've been wondering just how many are going to crop up after that "fence" because I left the "head" on them. 😁😁 Hope my neighbors enjoy them! 😂😂 Thanks so much for sharing! Take care.💜🙋‍♀️

    I think the cardboard box sticking out a little bit is a great idea. It will help wick moisture from the bottom and evaporate it out the top. Have you ever tried putting sawdust in your bins? The little particles of wood swell up and absorb a lot of water. Worms love it too! ~ Sandra

      Hey there Unbiased 🙋‍♀️ Thank you very much. I am feeling a lot better as I write this. This was a nasty little bug that's for sure but I've had some great herbal tea. 😁 Thank you, I do say I like them too. I actually learned how to build the "tops", the hinged hoop house part, from James Prigioni's channel. It's an excellent way to extend your season (if you need to). Plus, come Spring I'll have mesh over them instead of plastic. (Actually I left the mesh on this time under the plastic. 😉) You're so right, freezer burnt can still be eaten! 😁 I need to cut those out quick and give them a try because it's even colder now. Looking back at this I remembering those are on the side of that isn't completely screwed down. Chances are good they'd look better than that otherwise. But I'll remedy that in the next week. Great to see you. Thanks for watching and chatting with me. Take care! Keep on kicking butt over there. 💜🙋‍♀️

    It was so funny when you were trying to sneak up on the worms! They didn't seem to mind you disturbing their party. Have you ever tried working sawdust into a bin? It conditions the castings and provides superior nourishment instantly. I'm going to have to do that with a few of my bins, although I don't have fine sawdust available right now. We sifted wood chips to 1/4 inch, so it's more like tiny chips of wood. ~ Sandra

    • @theelpydimension
      @theelpydimension 13 дней назад

      Hello Sandra! I hope you're right, because I feel bad for them sometimes when I'm digging around. Then again, that's the nature of being a farmer, we tend to our herd. What is a grouping of worms called? Hm...🤔😉 I have not used sawdust in my bins. It's ironic you ask me that because I have been thinking lately about getting a bunch of woodchips or something of the kind for my bins. Sounds like it's meant to be! 😁 I am very interested in the idea that they add nourishment and conditioning as you say, that would be very good. I'll have to look around and see how I can get my hands on some chips or something. I have a log outside that's rotting from the center. The wood is very very soft so I put some in my compost however I was afraid to bring inside due to pests. Of course everything is frozen now but some things hibernate and survive the cold. But gosh the material is so nice I really want to put it in my bins. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into this. Did you produce your own chips? Take care and have a great rest of your week! 💜🙋‍♀️
