Snow Devils on Blencathra, Lake District
Snow Devils witnessed on the southern slope of Knowe Crag on Blencathra, English Lake District on 18/01/2023. This phenomenon is extremely rare. The best and most intense one is at 2:45 minutes.
A Snow Devil is created when a strong cold wind passes over a warm surface heated by sunlight. This can be patches of earth or rocks protruding from the snow. The warm air rising is then spun by the strong currents of cold air, and in turn collects the fine snow. They require very specific conditions to form and that’s why they are so rare. On this occasion on Blencathra, the slope on the north side of Knowe Crags is gentler so the wind speed picks up pace, and most importantly, rocks and scree pro...

Wild Camp Cook Set

A video to show what I use regarding cooking equipment, food and hydration on a wild camp for one night and two half days. Items shown are not the lightest, cheapest or the best, but they work for me.
Sharp Edge (step by step)

Sharp Edge (step by step) In June 2015, I did my first Blencathra summit wild camp. Having just enjoyed some fantastic Broken Spectres early the next morning, I decided to pop down to do Sharp Edge before breakfast (like ya do), while leaving the tent perched on the summit. Here's a 'step by step' video of Sharp Edge and the walk back to the summit. Hope you enjoy, and please feel free to share :)

A collection of photos taken while wild camping on six Lakeland summits of Pillar, Grasmoor, Pike O Stickle, Great End, High Stile and Scafell.
Dogs conquered Everest long before Edmund Hillary followed their paw prints to the summit.
What is the music?
dog: hold my beer
Excellent, first hand essential knowledge!
can i com 😢
Great video!
Nice vid.
Thanks :)
As a paraglider pilot in the Lakes I'm very interested in this! The snow devil around three minutes looks quite violent, any idea of the width and height? Generally was it a breezy day? Wind direction? What was the date/time of the video? (So I can check the met archive.)
Hi Rick. The video was taken at 10:30 am on 18/01/23. Extreme buffeting from the north; this was on the southern slope of Knowe Crags. On average a Snow Devil life span is 30 seconds to 2 minutes, 15 to 30 feet in diameter and 40 to 50 metres in height.
I liked your hobby very much, I love nature..
Thanks for sending the link through for this video @richardjennings I’ve watched it a few times now, but I was most interested in the coffee can/ windshield/ candlelight implementation. The Optimus Weekender HE set is already a star performer, so basing your kit around that means you know what you’re doing. I would expect that your candle heater / coffee can is great addition to a cold or damp night. I could have done with something similar a few nights ago. It was one of those - just damp - nights where it wasn’t particularly cold but at around 6 AM the dew point was finding its way into the inner tent and condensing on my Sleeping bag. Not uncomfortable, but rather inconvenient. A lightweight Bivvy bag would have solved that problem, but your simple heater would also prevent that condensation settling on my bag and most of the other kit around by just raising the temperature slightly and drying the air partially. Your 180ml coffee can serves you well in your ‘kit’ setup, Do you have any idea about a smaller - just heater - solution? I also liked your adaptation of the MSR Universal cannister support, so many times the smaller supports are just woefully inadequate. Ian.
Stunning climb 🙌your four legged handled it no problem thanks for sharing a great POV 😊 best regards Simon 🤝🔔😊🏔
Love the way the dog is leading this walk!!
Every now and again, he looks back with an expression that says, "are you OK? Do you need a paw?" 🐾
Is this much harder than Striding Edge Richard? I am not the best with heights and was a bit nervous on Striding Edge but managed to complete it. Is this one considerably more exposed and harder?
This video creeped me out and i dont know if its the music lol
Enjoyed your video.
Great video, thanks for the insight! Also, your dog is very well trained and even looks like he or she is smiling on a few occasions!
Hey thanks Richard, really appreciate that.
Cool. You didn't use a wide angle for attention, so we can actually see what's going on. That has made me contemplate the concept more clearly and appreciate what you'd done realisticly. And yes, your dog did it. Class!! Still looks scary though!
Not much of a challenge for that Mutt 😂. Great vid.
I'm there form Monday, wild camping and fishing for 2 days, my favorite place on Skye
Mate this was a very interesting video, thanks for sharing, I've done crib Goch and helvellyn striding swirral Edge last week, I'm looking at doin this one next weekend weather permitting, can anyone shed light if this one's harder etc than what I've done, on pics looks intimidating lol
If you've done crib goch this will be a walk in the park
Which way?? The dog, UP!! 😂😂 Great vid
why the metronome
Great compact kit. The Braveheart music brought back lots of memories of being an extra in the movie. A super film. Love the Optimus cook set...I’m off to get one as it looks very efficient.
Class video Richard, thoroughly enjoyed watching it, just done Crib Goch on the weekend & looking forward to doing this in the future! 😎👍🏻
I did Sharp Edge last Sunday. I went a bit wrong by following a path round to the right, rather than climbing straight onto the ridge. This meant I was out of the wind, but then had to climb up at a much steeper point. I joined the ridge just before Bad Step. Next, I didn't find an obvious way up Foule Crag and went left, which was another mistake! I then had to climb up and over to the right beofre ascending in a sort of gulley. Not sure where I was to be honest, but just kept going up! Then, quite quickly appeared at the top.
Dude, I did the EXACT same thing a few days ago
Well you and you’re dog made that look easy.
Me and a mate did Sharp Edge last week but we tackled it by descending the scramble rather than walking up it. It was a clear, dry day with a breeze. Sharp Edge is worth doing and I would say it is just as enjoyable as Striding Edge.
What's this like compared to Striding Edge?
imo striding edge is much easier
Striding edge or Jack's rack easier than this
Thanks for showing how it's done. I walked halfway up Sharp Edge last summer and scared the c**p out of myself as it was a damp day and the slate surfaces were very slippery. Having just read Keswick MRT's incident log I realise I was sensible to give up and come back another day. Next month in fact...
Thoroughly enjoyed that mate, thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you very much Anthony :)
Great video mate looks like a perfect day
Really enjoyed watching this again. And your facial expression at the end is just priceless lol.
Hi Richard, That's a nice set up you have. I also have an Optimus Cookset, but I will definitely need to get a couple of those silicone discs to go with it. I also liked your cut down coffee tin, really liked that idea with the candles. Atb Glenn.
South-West-Wilderness Thanks for taking the time :)
Nice video, Thanks. Any water sources up there?
Hi My name is Adrian and i work for a film production company called Double8 www.double8.co.uk we are in the process of editing a film for the Environment Agency to be shown at the North West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee Floods Conference in July 2016. We would like to use some clips from your film that you shot, to illustrate the devastating effect of the flooding caused in December 2015. The film would be shown at the conference and then possibly on the EA website and youtube page. If you are happy for us to use the footage we will credit you at the end of the film, please send me any details that you would like us to add to the credits. Your sincerely Adrian
Beautiful, really want to go now :)
Fantastic video Richard. This looks a piece of cake compared to when we did it in snow a few days ago lol
That dog goes step by step the same route as mine! Here's a link of a clip from yesterday (typical damp Sharp Edge conditions)- ruclips.net/video/N_WIHki_57Y/видео.html
