Hell Yesh!
The word “noodling” has always been used when referring to Jerry’s playing, and while I think it’s not at all an accurate or appropriate term to use as an all encompassing label of his style, it’s not incorrect to say that he did enjoy noodling because he was an endless explorer and I think he wanted to take risks, try ideas that occurred to him and find out in the moment if they would work or not. That exploration could be perceived as noodling, but it wasn’t in the way that suggests incompetence; Jerry was perhaps one of the most competent guitarists ever. I never tire (much to my wife’s chagrin) listening to the same song played live across the duration of the years it was played searching for the best solos for that track and learning how his moods and feelings about the song sometimes really changed over the years. Listen to Peggy O over the years, for example. In the 70s it started out as a faster Set One song and later changed to a deeply emotional Set Two standard with the most sublime solos occurring in the late 80s IMO. Ah, I could ramble for days!
Get down n Disco Dead 💃💃💃💓💓🤘🏼🎧
As I was walkin' 'round Grosvenor Square
the way he plays is like he's describing a physical thing with sound, how this thing moves, how it affects things---it is so much more than just sounding cool
I played this in the morning at an outdoor mountain rave. People started dancing and it blew their minds afterwards when I told them they had just enjoyed GD. HA!
.... The Music Never Stopped.... 'They're a band beyond description, like Jehovah's favorite choir.."
jerry garcia makes music. beautiful music with great musicianship. we live in a world that tends to favor vulgarity instead of beauty. jerry garcia provided, his music still provides a kind of unprecedented poetic electric guitar, sweet cosmic stream, widely improvised, while denoting a stunning musical feeling, marvelous musicality, musical quality
I was aware of this without knowing!!!!! Thank you so much!!!! Phil. In Alpine Valley I had the FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE of being 11 rows back on the aisle with such a great line of sight to THE PHIL ZONE!!!!
Wow one of my favorites so good to hear Phil’s playing isolated and how it changed and evolved .🌹
Rest In Peace, Mr. Phil Lesh😭
St Stephen on 12/30/1977 is maybe the best guitar playing I've heard from Jerry, in the first few minutes before the slow breakdown. That's hard to say bc I've heard hundreds or maybe thousands of hours of Dead music, but every note he plays in those first few guitar solos has a purpose and a direction, and the band was right there with him helping to drive it to its peak. I haven't listened to it in a few years at this point, but I could probably hum at least 90% of the guitar solos from memory, it's burned in my brain. I think there's a video version on youtube with re-synced audio.
The news that Phil Lesh has died just came out a few hours ago. The algorithm led me to a few TV news tributes to the man, then it recommended this. RUclips gets it right sometimes. Rest in Peace, Phil.
Rip 😢
Jerry Garcia was a slob, he came into interview once where he shit his pants. He said he clean in up later. Pretty gross, wallerin around in own feces plus he lived in dumpster.
In interview,Jerry stated that he often came up with his parts on piano, and went to guitar once he knew what he wanted to play, which is the opposite of "noodling endlessly"
Never understood my dad's love of this man, until I got into advanced guitar techniques and someone in a class mentioned him. I asked what he meant by he was "great", explaining having listened to all the albums with my dad. The guy went on to explain that, Jerry was at his best when he could just jam, and that meant live shows were the best place to see it. Dad followed them the summer my mom was pregnant with me since he wouldn't have another chance. He was 19. It was 1984. He spent the entire day stoned and in mourning the day Jerry died. I was only 12 or something (can't remember when he died).
As a guitar player, I always appreciate taking the risk and pushing things a little further, even if it doesn't always work out. When Jerry and the rest of the band were listening to one another, reacting musically and firing on all cylinders, it was quite a beast to behold.
He had a missing finger, so of course he's going to play guitar in a strange way.
Yeah, Live Dead Dark Star (and countless other examples) that ain’t noodling, that’s called weaving pure gold.
It's spanish jam
I was at these Stanley shows and I had a wonderful time.
The fact is, anyone who has known the dead can provide endless examples of jerry ripping. The "noodling" is what one hears when they don't have the patience to understand context. It's all part of an overall experience that the unique originality of the dead has developed over many, many , many shows.
Munich “Dark Star” is a favorite. Check out the whole colossus.
@@j.pederzane9692 True indeed. I love that whole Europe 72 run of shows, especially the 4-hour Wigan show in England
"Noodling." Notice the rest of the band responding in the moment. ruclips.net/video/1Q42PtuXslI/видео.html
He knew how to play the silences between the notes.
I love that one song where Garcia jams a lot at the end.
What happens?
Even the "aimless noodling" part you showed is a small part of a greater artistic vision. It sounds like aimless noodling when decontextualized from the rest of the song and the setlist but there is very much an artistic purpose in the greater context of a live grateful dead show.
Love cherry Garcia and the dead I've heard too many people say their music sucks nobody listens to the deads music. There are a lot of songs from them that are not "hits" that I love as if they were hits. to my ear they are lol.
Top Ramen…..king of noodlers! Nothing a first year guitar student couldn’t play. WTF
such a good band-loved the big Lebowski fest-do they still play?
@kmann339 They stopped doing the Pgh Abides shortly before the pandemic. 3 of the 4 of us in that band are now playing bluegrass as the Sweaty Already String Band!
People who say that Jerry Garcia just aimlessly noodles are the same type of people who say that LaBron James just runs back and forth on a wood floor and puts a ball in a hoop.
And to think he played like this missing part of a finger!
🎉👍🏽🙏🏽👏🏾
nice example. i show people the winterland 77 peggy-o solo to make the same argument..he is a composer steeped in the american tradition with endless vocabulary and chops
fucking amazing!!!!!!!!
Anyone who thinks Grateful Dead were ever good only think so because they associate it with the first time they ever got high
@@Louzahsol cool story bro
@@patrickvarine8476 and thats the best you will ever come back with because you know im right
@Louzahsol I mean I was gonna go with "Tell me you don't know sh*t about music without telling me you don't know sh*t about music," but it seemed pretty obvious already.
@@patrickvarine8476 which is funny because people who think grateful dead are good don't know anything about music and only think its good because it was the first time they got high. People only go to dead shows to score acid
@@patrickvarine8476 lol the band is objectively not good
many men wear a guitar, but few are true guitar slingers.
Jerry Garcia and Eddie Van Halen were both in their own League can't judge them
Far out, man! Jerry was an excellent musician.
This was when Bobby was at the top of his game playing rhythm. Not my favorite rendition of Jerry’s playing, though… 🤷♂️
They just don’t get it and I feel bad for those people.
SMH … Says Jerry wasn’t an aimless noodler. Posts clips of aimless noodling.
👈🏼this Jerryholic approves of this video
I find it amusing how many so-called "defenders" of Garcia's legacy deem it necessary to immortalize "the '70s" [especially 1977] and go out of their way to dismiss the last decade of GD shows/Jerry's performances as solely the lamentable result of debilitating heroin [and, nebulously > cocaine(?)] addiction.. It's been well-documented by "insiders" [Scully, Parish] that Jerry's Persian habit began as far back as [the hyped to the heavens year of] 1977.. And certainly > sleepy, uninspired and mediocre performances are dotted here and there THROUGHOUT the Dead's thirty(30) year history.. This may be just one(1) man's/wingnut's opinion, but I'm gonna intone the unthinkable, nevertheless: 1985 to 1995 are strewn w/diamond-like performances by Garcia/the entire band [JGB, as well].. Admittedly, things got a little dire in '94-'95, but if one(1) is willing to dig, there DOES exist gold to be mined from even those dark days.. This missive is not intended to come of as some "thunderbolt from on high", but rather, just as a forum to posit a differing opinion from those which are passed off as the company line, time and again.. As always, feel free to ignore.. All the best > to anybody/everybody who's bothered to read this far!..
Garcia on his best, and even good nights, was brilliant. On his bad nights, which didn't begin to show up with any frequency until the 80s, due to the opiates and cocaine, were truly bad. He's still one of my absolute favorite guitar players, because he was fully dedicated to music in the moment. Not many musicians truly are. Even the best of them, many of whom I love and respect. My only complaint with this video is that, one, it's too short, and two, there are many other examples of his playing that surpass this one many times over. There is an abundance of evidence of his skill as a player that can just end the debate right there. Check out some of the Mississippi Halfstep from 1976/77/78. There are many nights where he navigated through those changes with the the skill of the best jazz players, rather than just playing over the top of the changes. Jerry could be as much a world class player as the best of them, which makes his drug induced descent all the more heart breaking. His saving grace was that his heart was *always* in his playing, and that always shone through.
Listening to redmans interviews about he's favorite albums he made on youtube, Redman's 'Dare Iz a Darkside, he rated 6, I was shocked 😱 he said it was a dark time in his life. He does'nt even proform any of the songs from the album. However this is the first album I bought from Redman back in the days and is my favorite Redman album of all times, No 1 to me. My favorite all time song, Sooperman Luva II💯💯💯💯
@@stevenwilliams7262 I found this out later as well. It's a bummer because these are my absolute favorite of his songs. But I understand.
Europe 1972 Tennessee Jed. Goes through key changes and it builds and Builds.
Dude's an incredible guitar player. What he didn't do, he didn't have these big showy solos like Jimmy Page or Jimi Hendrix. He was more country inspired. But they're all great guitar players. They just have different styles.
A much better time before liberalism destroyed everything. I miss Jerry.
