A Chatty Video About My Reading and a Short Hiatus
A bit of a rambling video, but I need a few weeks away from Booktube. I love it, but as I tried to explain, I need some time to just decompress after my doing the Read What You Own challenge. I should be back at the beginning of 2025.

First and foremost, I think the Read What You Own challenge is a great challenge hosted by Olly @CriminOllyBlog and I do think I got a lot out of participating but I needed to finish the challenge. These are my thoughts on my experience this year. Weekly Reading Vlog 12/1/24 - 12/7/24 go to 1:06:00 to see the meltdown ruclips.net/video/gGB3LIDzO_Y/видео.html Amy Instagram: trucoop...

❤
The channel should not be stressing for any of us since it is a hobby for us 😊 Take care and have a good break ❤ 😘
I’ll miss your videos but I totally understand needing a break. I’ve found it incredibly hard to decipher if I’m reading something because I actually want to or because someone else made it sound irresistible. After almost a year long hiatus, I think I’ve finally nailed down more of my own reading tastes and am hoping I can watch videos without buying things I know I won’t like. 🤞🏻I hope you have a great break and have a great 2025 with lots of 5 star reads!
I’ve been in the same headspace. And I’ve been working too much. I want to read everything. Always enjoy your channel 🐈❤️🐈📚
Rest. Relax. Refresh. Get your groove back. Way, way back at the beginning of Booktube popularity I bought so many YA fantasies because that was the going thing and eventually had to sell them all to a used bookstore, because my interest ran out before the trend did. Currently, the romantasy books are everywhere, but I know my cold, dead, post menopausal heart could care less about couples having sex on dragons! So I haven't bought any. My new battle is fighting off non fiction reads that are being suggested to me because I'm interested in current affairs. But I know that if I don't read what I already have, by the time I do get to them, they will no longer be current affairs!! So frustrating. They warn us that we'll be killed by our TBR pile, but I always thought I'd be suffocated, not menaced to death. Peer pressure is deadly. Enjoy your time away from the rat race and find your own path. Your choices make you unique and I'll be happy to to watch your reading journey when you're ready. Happy Holidays to the kitties!
I hope you have an amazing break and you come back when you are completely ready! This video is so timely for me. I have been an avid reader for over 55 years, I manage a public library, have a large private collection and still, the last two years have been the worst two years of my reading journey, I have still read a heap, but the quality seems to have dipped (a lot!). I own over 3,500 books and yet I still crave re-reading because my collection overwhelms me and mostly doesn't inspire me to read. As an avid reader, I seem to have lost my way. I have barely read any romance or urban fantasy- two of my favourite genres. If you look at my shelves, you can clearly see the trends for the last couple of years on booktube. I am really hoping to do a massive clean out (and try not to feel too guilty), so that I can return to the genres that I love. I can't say booktube has ruined my reading, as i am a responsible adult :), but I can say the fact we can buy so easily off the internet, certainly has meant my reading has been heavily influenced. I really really miss being excited about picking up a book and looking forward to the next in the series. The only authors that continue to do that for me are Nalini Singh and JD Robb. Sorry - this is my own ramble! I hope that when you come back, that you have rekindled your love of reading the books you really enjoy. Whether they are read by others or not - maybe you will find more people who are looking for those books to connect with people. All the best for the holiday season - from NZ <3
Sounds like a good plan. Unhooking from YT is probably good to take a break. Have a good holiday and happy new year. I know you lost some family members this year so big hugs during the holidays. 💜🩵🦋
Amy - Thank you for the update and not just disappearing. Please enjoy your break and use this time to rest and rejuvenate. It's funny - while I am not a booktuber, I understand what you are saying. I have stepped back from watching all of the channels I used to watch; it got overwhelming. I only, consistently, watch about 10 anymore. I always wanted the "new and shiny" so I would buy too many or get them from the library. Of course, that means the 400 or so books on my shelf aren't getting read. We will be waiting for you, Cooper and Truman to return. Have a wonderful holiday season!!!
So sad about your brother’s cat. Losing a pet is always so hard. I failed the read what you own challenge. I can’t do it in December for sure but maybe not ever. I am a stress buyer. And I’ve had a few stressors these last couple of months. Maybe I’ll try again in January. Might be easier to just do it one week at a time.
Sounds like a good decision Amy, it can definitely be good to take a break to free up some time, mind space and energy into being able to do the things that we want to do. It can also be a challenge when sometimes the niches and genres that are the ones exciting are not the ones everyone is talking about. I love the variety of the works you read and always appreciate hearing about new titles from you (and love how much you enjoy rereading). Will miss your videos but 100% support your decisions. Take the time, enjoy your time on the things that you enjoy. We'll be here for you when you get back. Have a great holiday season :)🐈🎄🐈
It’s funny that you have come to this realization because I had the same experience. I had to back off on watching booktube folks from time to time because I was buying and ordering from the library books that weren’t ones I really wanted/enjoyed. This results in much wasted time because I will read a chapter or more, only to drop the book for lack of interest. I hope you have a nice rejuvenating time and rediscover your true reading interests. Hope you have a wonderful rest of the holiday season. I will miss you and the boys, so I hope to see you again soon! 🤞👏
i'm glad to hear you are listening to what you need and are taking time for yourself. i hope this break can help you reflect, relax, or whatever else you may feel you need. 💚 i would be glad to hear about unpopular and/or backlog titles. i can find all the popular books so easily. it's refreshing and so much more interesting to me to hear about other titles, things You enjoy. no matter what you decide to do and bring to your channel, i will be happy to hear about. have a great holiday season. i'm looking forward to seeing some new videos from you once you feel ready to come back. 😊
It is perfectly understandable that you need a Booktube break! Enjoy the time away, be kind to yourself, and have a fabulous holiday! I will look forward to seeing you when you get back.
I understand ❤ I'm going to really miss you (and the boys 😺). No one on booktube is talking about the books I have lined up. I'm almost done with the latest Evanovich book! Next is a years old stand alone by Charlege Harris. Very unpopular 😁 Your video made me think about my influence by others ..... from very lovely book tubers. When I read what I want, I enjoy reading so much more. If not for your past video, I wouldn't have come to the realization....not as quickly. I don't need popular books. I'm here for you. Happy Christmas holiday season, Amy, Cooper, Truman. If you feel the need to talk, please film it and post it. 😊 ❤ 📚 🎄 Lynn
Have a good Booktube break. We will be here for you when you get back. Have a good holiday season too!
Yay for the completion of the installation of the garage doors! I’m glad The Wren and the Holly Library is good so far.
I support your book buying habits! You get to decide how to spend your money! No guilt!
Thanks! I do need to stop feeling guilty for the way I spend my money.
I’m glad the garage door fiasco is about over. Your last video inspired me to do a 5-minute look see at my shelves and did a quick unhaul of about 12 books I just don’t think I’m interested in anymore.
Way to go!! Sometimes it feels good to unhaul! Thanks!
The Wren and the Holly Library sounds exactly what I've been craving. I was in a slump after my family went back to Minnesota. I just got the newest Evanovich book # 31 in the series. I started it this morning, and I'm on page 40. Always funny, outragous, easy reading, a guilty pleasure, entertaining. Great job exercising 💪
I’m glad you’re enjoying your book! Find joy in your reading! Thanks!
So sorry about your brother’s cat! The garage door drama! I would have been SO angry! I don’t blame you for ditching the no buy challenge. I am not even going to try that!
It was a crazy week! And I’m glad that finished the challenge. I think it broke me. Thanks!
Okay, some random thoughts. I think you're a victim of FOMO. Both for books AND events. Often, during your book hauls, you mention that you purchased something because "everyone was talking about it." Classic FOMO. This happens to everyone. Although, I must admit when you say that, it drives me nuts because I have no clue who you're talking about because i don't follow the same people you do! ☺️ I also don't read most of what you do; I just enjoy your channel. We like the same genres, but not the same sub genres. Anyway, you're being influenced by the social media accounts you follow and it sometimes shows in your purchases. My guess is if you limited some of your social media time, your purchases might drop. At least those types of purchases. Just a thought. Now another thing that book tube is great at is holding events. Love then or hate them, they're constantly coming up on our calendars and we want to participate. Often they are timed and we throw ourselves wholeheartedly into the event knowing that it will be over fairly quickly. You gotta read it NOW!!!! You want to see results! Cram those graphic novels down and snarf those novellas like Ding Dongs. It's a crash diet. Maybe i shouldn't mention Ding Dongs and crash diets in the same sentence, but you get what I mean. 😅. Personally, I can't approach the Read What You Own Challenge like a crash diet. If there are too many restrictions, you're setting yourself up to fail. It isn't a race, it's a way to look at your current habits and ask some questions of yourself . Do you think you buy too many books? Would you like to read more of what you buy in a current year? Do you need to put the brakes on? If you answer yes to any of those questions, then you can chose to do something about it. But not by yanking the emergency brake so hard you ruin your transmission. And you don't have to do it on anybody else's timetable besides your own. If you're looking for long term results, you need to make changes you can live with. It's the same thing with changing food habits or getting more exercise. Consistency is what you're looking for. Slow and steady wins the race. Cut yourself some slack and and make you're own rules. You'll be happier for it and maybe you'll find some gems on your shelves that you're currently ignoring. You don't always need to keep up with the Jones's.
Wow! I didn't think about the fact that I probably am watching or looking at too much social media. I've made it my main evening activity to watch Booktube for hours while I read here and there. I think you're correct that I should cut back a bit on that just so I'm not overly influenced to join everything or get a book everyone is talking about. I like the analogy about diets and ding dongs. That is definitely something that I understand and have seen happen to other creators. Also I might feel I buy too many books sometimes, but it is something that I love and it's my money. It's not like I'm overspending and hurting myself financially. I did take away an idea about not instantly buying something I see and I hope I can be more intentional with my buying. Thank you so much for your thoughts on this. I really appreciate the perspective.
You really have to be in the right mindset for the challenge. For book lovers, it's equivalent to what a championship fight is for boxers. I've done the challenge twice before and done ok. 2024 for me has been horrid and incredibly stressful, so i knew i couldn't do it this year. I also agree that its a really bad time of year to start it. I think February would be a good time to start and end at Easter. Also, try to stop feeling guilty for something that brings you such joy. As long as it isn't putting you under financial stress, then its ok to get things you are going to love and enjoy.
Thanks for all your thoughts on this. I do think that doing it another time of the year would make it much easier to challenge me but also not make it a painful experience.
June and July, and February and March for low buy 💪 📚
Also good ideas! Thanks!
If I HAVE to buy, I have a list and I make it doable to buy the top 2 or 3. My priority list can change every single day, or stay the same for a week or two. I'll usually choose a book in a series and one off of my radar. I can unhaul without regret, especially if I can get it at the library. I only keep the series I will re read several times. My tbr lists save me. I have zero special additions. I do not ever pre order. ❤ great advise 😺 😻
I like the idea of priority lists! I think I might need to think of what I really want but not just in the moment. Thanks for the advice!
You need to stop feeling guilty for buying books. You work hard. You have the right to do what you want with your money. If you want to do a Read What You Own Challenge, you can make it your own, and May, November and December are out. For me the problem is impulse buying. I need to get that under control. I am trying to be more aware of what I want on my shelves and what I can check out at the library. Right now, I won't have the local library as a source because it is closed until 2026 for renovations. Thank you for making this video because it does help to know other book lovers have this problem and can give ideas on what to do about it. Take care and happy reading!
Thanks! I appreciate your comments! I do think I might try a version of this challenge at another time of year. Thanks!
Aha , sounds like you found the part of the challenge that is really helpful: to put something on a wishlist and not buying right away (unless you want them right away!). That is a super helpful thing to know. And going to the library is a great way to enjoy without spending, for the times where that is a good thing to do. Or to embrace mood reading ! Sounds like the challenge was helpful to figure some things out, but also pretty stressful! Hopefully taking the helpful part and leaving the stressful part is a good way to go. Plus, you already have your twice a year bookshelf cull that sounds like it works well for you! I appreaciated hearing your thoughts on the challenge both here and in the vlog. Sounds like you came to some good decisions.
Thanks! I am glad I’ve realized some good and bad things about this challenge in the end. And I did do my December cull so that’s one thing done. 😂
No challenge is worth stressing over 😊 and you took out quite a number of books from the shelves 👍🏻
Thanks! I feel a lot better now! I’m glad the challenge done.
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your brothers cat. 🐈💛 About the read what you own challenge, it does feel like a fun/helpful challenge in concept it feels like this time of year is not helpful or fun for you. Missing out on Black Friday and Holiday sales just feels mean. You love buying books. To not get to enjoy that element of loving books, isn't great. Maybe the challenge is good for the beginning of the year, or if you are saving up for something specific instead, but to miss out on deals feels like not the spirit of one of the elements of being a reader you really enjoy. OH! I see you have a whole video on your thoughts on the challenge.. I will go watch that now :) 📚📚📚
Thanks Shannon. I agree that I got something out of the challenge but yeah, missing Black Friday deals hurt. Still thinking of trying a version of it at another time of year. Thanks!
It's me again, if you're obsessing, just buy a couple of books. Im not pre ordering any books, but I am buying second books without reading book 1 😂 Not this month.
I know I’ll still preorder books, especially in series. But I’ll try to not go wild! Thanks!
Hi Amy, I'm so sorry about your brothers cat 🐈 Is his name Chance? 😢 Keep Cooper and Truman close 🫂 My outcof state company went on a day trip. I'm enjoying this vlog. King of Battle and Blood sounds like it might be more sexy than I want right now 😁 I've been off 95% of booktube and my book buying has dropped off to two books all month (except for gifts for family). I bought the newest Janet Evanovich, Stephanie Plum book, and An Easy Death by Charlene Harris. Magic, a fun female gunslinger, alternate history of the US, wizards, etc. Seemed fun and a book I chose and have heard nothing about. 😊 Bummer about the ending of the Sparks book, but I'm glad you enjoyed most of it. Ever King sounds good. Book buying is an addiction like anything else. I quit smoking and started eating peanuts 🥜 Of course Im eating way, way, too many and Ive gained 23 pounds. My MD is mad, so now Im eating ice cream. Book buying could be a major problem for me but I have to save to go to Minnesota for a month every summer. I can't have both. You get rid of whatever you dont feel like reading. I got rid of Jade City series and Red Rising. I know, people's favorites! Thanks Amy! You've done well. Love to Coop and Truman ❤❤❤
Thanks! Yes, the cat was named Chance. Such a good boy kitty. Hope you enjoy the books you have picked up. I think book buying can be an addiction but I am careful not to overspend what I can afford nowadays. That was much harder when I was younger and broke. I think you’re right that some choices have to be made if money needs to be saved. I do hope to curb my spending next year. We’ll see. Thanks!
I think you have done well with buying so few books and you unhealed quite a few. Clearly books are a great comfort to you and it's the same for me. Really enjoyed the long vlog which was comforting and entertaining as I have had a difficult health week. I read more audio books and having splurged on the new kindle mocha, Im trying out KU to see if I actually read more physically. I also browse the my local library and second hand book shops a lot. Id never survive. complete buying ban as I subscribe to audible and EVERAND.....📚🎄🙂
I hope you feel better soon 📚 🐶 🐕
Thanks! I do find books a comfort and I’m pretty sure a complete book ban is a bad idea for me. Hopefully I’ll find a way to curb my buying but still allow myself the joy of new to me books. Thanks! I’m sorry you had a rough week.
I can't do a book buying ban. It makes me want to buy books. December is my birthday month. It's the 26th. I have always been passionate about books and reading. It is the one thing I spend money on. When I was in high school, my parents gave me lunch money and I would use what was left on books! I am trying to be more aware of the books I'm buying and not impulse buying. I am also thinking about scaling back on watching book tube. I think a lot of my impulse buying has come from book tube. I am so easily influenced when it comes to books. I didn't renew my Barnes and Noble membership. Even with the 10% off and the rewards the books are too expensive. My local library has closed. They are doing renovations and won't open until 2026. That really hurts. I have a large home library and plenty to read, but I also love using the library. I hope you find a way to curb your book buying. That is easier said than done. Good luck! Take care and happy reading!
Your library is closing for a long time! When it reopens, it's going to be gorgeous. 📚
Wow! Thats a long time to lose the library. It’s so great that there are people like us who love books and reading. But I do wonder if maybe I need to cut back on Booktube as it does fuel my desire to get more books. Thanks!
This was the video I needed. Nice to see books I will have trouble holding back on.
Thanks.
Great haul!
Thanks!
Very restrained book haul!! I don’t know if I could resist unused book credit! 😂
It was so hard! We’ll see what happens!
I am so interested to hear what you think of The Wren and the Holly Library. Your cat was being super adorable trying to get your attention!
I’m trying to get to The Wren in the Holly Library. Soon! Yeah, Cooper is pretty needy! Thanks!
Hi Amy, you did well in November. I needed this video, I need a break from cooking and cleaning. I have family coming in the morning from Minneapolis. Two kids, one a baby. Eek. 😊
Good luck on the cooking and cleaning! Have a great time with family! Thanks!
The garage door saga continues 😮 hope you get it sorted out soon. The read what you own challenge ☹️ glad I'm not doing it again this year. Haven't pulled the trigger on Throne of Glass series yet. I've got The Hogfather Terry Pratchett in my book advent calendar in December. Also have many many library books. My December tbr is all the books from my book advent calendar and the numerous library books! I don't even want to think about my kindle!
Good luck on your book advent calendar! Sounds fun. Love the Hogfather! Hope you enjoy. I feel the same about all my unread kindle books! lol! Thanks!
Katie Roberts must have a sex obsession. I tried reading Court of the Vampire Queen and it is like it is full of sex and gross sex and d*ck sucking and no real story and stupid teenagery mindset stuff, just gross. Seriously, flip to any page and they are f*cking. What is wrong with this author?
I hope you enjoy from blood and ash! I tried SO hard. I liked the first book but couldn't stick with the second book. People keep saying to push through but it wasn't for me! I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it because I want to be convinced!
Hopefully I’ll at least enjoy the first book. Thanks!
The stepback cover is cool 😂
I love the setback! Made laugh at his pirate hair! 🤣
@ oh the hair is so precious 🤣🤣
I want to read a lot of fun stuff in December. Good luck with your choices!
I hope you read a lot of fun books in December! Thanks!
Please give cooper a hug from me from Australia we have matching cats ❤
He loves to cuddle. Hug your kitties as well! Thanks!
The Bone Season is on my TBR. Good luck, you have too many choices. Good job not buying books. 😊 📚
We’ll see if I get to the Bone Season. I do have too many choices. Thanks!
It is always extra fun to buddy read a quite fun series with you ❤❤
I enjoy the buddy read updates. 😊
Definitely! Love the buddy reads!
Your hair looks great! Hope you had fun celebrating your dad’s 80th. I can’t wait to hear what you think about the Wren and the Holly Library.
Thanks!
Your hair looks great! Have a great week!
Thanks! Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!
Happy 80th to your dad. I wish him health, books, wine, and cool rocks . 🍷 I love your hair! I love it so much, I had my hair cut and colored very similarly. About 7 inches cut off! I'm so happy you loved the Tad Williams book. I'm still reading and enjoying book 2 from the House Witch series. I think I'll read the latest JD Robb book next. I'm still interested in Foul Days. Have you ever read Stephen King's Dark Tower series? My son just read it and loved it 🤔 Look at sweet Cooper 😺 ❤️ 📚
Thanks! I have read the Dark Tower series and really enjoyed it overall. It takes a bit to get into, but it’s got its great moments.
Your hair looks great! Love the cover of Done and Dusted. So glad you enjoyed it! Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Thanks! Thanks again for the book! Happy Thanksgiving!
The cover art for The Vorrh reminds me of The Ring.
