How to Create a Wedding Day Photography Timeline
Ssize and weight are the big cons of this lens. Such lenses can be built a lot smaller and lighter (the Sony 50mm f1.2 GM and the Sigma 50mm f1.2 DG DN are examples on how to do this). So I'm waiting for Nikon to redesign it. Until then I'll use the 50mm f1.8 S.
I could definitely agree with this! I think the reason why I'm *ok* with it is because I"m coming from a huge D3s for over a decade! LOL Using the nikon mirrorless has been so nice!! But yes! I do wish the 50 1.2 was as light weight as the 1.8!
I have the 85/1.2; absolutely love it. Right now, I'm torn between going for a 50/1.2, or 35/1.8 to complement the 85. Thoughts?
I think it really depends on what you’re photographing!! If you’re doing portraits or photographing people, I typically lean toward the 50 because it’s more true to life. I also love a lower aperture so my preference has consistently been the 50 1.2! I hope this helps!
Thank you! I simply needed to understand a few differences. You helped me decide which is best for me within 2 minutes (after watching hours of other very good posts, yet they lacked the information I sought).
That's amazing to hear! Thank you for tuning in!
I really appreciate you making this video
Thank you for tuning in!
Do you have any photos from the same shoot with the 645 and 50 1.2? Would love to see some comparisons! Want this lens to get a similar medium format film look
Hi there! I'm not sure if this photo would be helpful for you but this was from a lens comparison I did: catherineguidry.zenfolio.com/p12062760/ee3d5fc76
Thank you for your review.
Thank you for watching!
I always bring three cameras to a wedding with digital. I had one camera break down on me at a wedding. Its nice to have a back to the back up. I heard of two stories from other photographers that had two cameras break down on them. Its super rare but why take the chance. The Nikon D200 has the same sensor as the Nikon D3S.
You can never be too prepared!!
When you broke your lens/the filter got jammed on, were you using a lens hood at the time? If you were not, do you think that might or might not have impacted the damage (pun intended)
That’s a great question! I’m not sure if it would have made a difference; possibly!! But no, I was not wearing a hood at the time. I actually never use one ironically enough!
I have one
Isn’t it such an amazing lens?!
But you don't have 2 😉, it's ok, i don't even have 1 😅
@@isaiasanchez1987 That's ok! It took me a long time to find this lens...and now I DO have two! One for me and one for my husband/second photographer!
When you say that 1.8 is small is cause you are not comparing the G and F models... is HUGE for a 50mm f/1.8 and nikon has to improve that fact in lot of new lenses. That said, the 1.8 does the job but the big 1.2 is super sharp and fast. Good comparison
I do agree with this!
This is a great way to add structure to determining pricing. Thanks for sharing this knowledge
Thank you so very much for tuning in! I’m happy you found it helpful!!
great comparison
Thank you so much for watching! Please let me know if there is any other comparisons you’d like to see!
I show images in my phone to star with and then i kindly direct them. Its works but the best should be to show them with your Own body.
Yes! Using your own body to direct them is so helpful!!
Hi Cat, thanks a lot. Im wondering about the s 50 1.2 or the s 85 1.2 to Get a similar look of the contact 645 lScanned with frontier like the jose villa ones. Maybe you had the contact 80 lens? My question is regarding crompression and fall of. ( wedding portraits). Thank you.
I’m not too familiar with the 85 1.2 so I cannot speak to it. But I have done a side by side test of the 50 next to the 80 (using an adapter on the Z6ii). The focal length is similar (slightly more zoomed in when the 80 is on my digital body) but the contax does seem to have more compression and slightly more fall off. I will have to do a video comparison at some point showing these results! I actually have only compared the 80 on a digital body and I’m still waiting for the film scans. I’ll make a note to do this video sometime after the film scans come back.
Bravo! Beautiful! Homages! ⚡⚡⚡ JAR
Thank you for watching, Jonathan!
My conundrum is I have the Trinity, 14-24, 24-70, and the 70-200 f 2.8 lenses. I would like to add the 50 1.2 to my kit but as you state, 2K is a lot of cash. My thought was that I could get away with a 50mm by using the 24-70. I am a general all around photographer of over 55 years, do not work professionally but love the best gear I can and sometimes cannot afford. I receive my Z9 this past February and just love it. I would love to have the 50 1.2 sitting on it but I am having a difficult time justifying the expense. My question to you is, in your opinion can the 24-70 be used successfully as a substitute for a fixed 50 mm lens. Thanks Rick
Gosh this is tough. But knowing that you're a fan of the "BEST" gear...the 50 1.2 is incredible. What if you rented it to see if you could justify the cost? I do use my 24-70 very often (I have the original and the new z lens). However, every since purchasing the 50 1.2 I ONLY use the 24-70 when I cannot get the space I need to fit everyone on the frame OR if it's quick paced and I can't risk missing the shot (like a ceremony). It's hard to believe but I use the 50 exclusively for prep on a wedding day, portraits and if I can only choose one lens to take with me for a day out of exploring, it's the 50!
@@CatherineGuidryEducation I went for the 50mm f1.2 so now I have completed my Z lens build out. Regards, Rick
@@rickpinelli1586 that’s awesome!! Let me know what you think! I realized one more major different between the two lenses this past week. The 50 is also so much better with color rendering when used with back light! I compared the two for an interior session and it was so apparent.
I have the Z24-70 f2.8 and Z70-200 f2.8 on my Z9 camera . Decided to buy the Z50 f1.2 and I tell you it doesn't leave my camera. It's such a stunning lens. The pictures are beautiful. I also bought the Z135 Plena .... the zooms now collect dust.
Excellent information on the 50 f 1.2 and how it fits in with the other lenses you use.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
mc 50mm f2.8 ?
I’ve never tried the 50 2.8! With the new line of x lenses the cost is so affordable for the 1.8 I jumped straight to it! It was only recently that I upgraded to the 1.2 due to the cost of the lens.
maybe I missed it but this review only shows 1 photo taken using this lens and the photo was soft?
If you’d like to view more images taken with this lens: here’s an entire session where I used only the 50mm 1.2 : catherineguidry.zenfolio.com/p254757473
Unfortunately, the selection of only one photo, which in addition is completely out of focus, works like anti-advertising

@@CatherineGuidryEducation thanks
Nice video. Point of fact: the difference between f1.8 and f1.2 is not 2 stops, it is 1.17 stops or (one and a one sixth). It breaks down to this 1.8 is 2/3 of a stop slower than 1.4 and 1.4 is half a stop slower than 1.2 - thus .67 + .5 = 1.17 or approximately 1 1/6 stops. You mentioned that it was 2 stops in this video and in another I saw of yours so I thought I would mention this.
Wow! I’m blown away by this math!! Thank you for clarifying
While I'm just an enthusiast, I bought a Z 50 f/1.2 S to go along with my adapted Canon EF 85 f/1.2 L II, even though I haven't used a 50mm prime for over four decades. While some pros may not consider the big & heavy 50 f/1.2 S due the reason that the 50 f/1.8 S is so good already. However and as a business owner myself, I often think of competitive advantage and customer satisfaction. Nevertheless, horse for courses and each business has its budget, strategic plan and mission statement.
Oh wow! I never thought about adapting a canon lens for this camera. That’s really smart!! Do you mind sharing what setup you use in order to do this?
@@CatherineGuidryEducation I bought a cheap brand of adapter, the ALTSON CEF-NZ back in the early days to explore this option, while the FRINGER EF-NZ/FR-NZ1 seems to be a popular and preferred choice by some Nikonians. I didn't bother to upgrade to a Fringer adapter because mine is compatible with my Canon lenses, such as 85 f/1.2 L II, 28-70 f/2.8 L, 24-105 f/4 L IS, 70-200 f/2.8 & f/4 IS, etc., although the AF may not be at its best.
@@bfs5113 That's such great insight! I'm going to look into this. I've used the Fringer adapter but for its price point understand that it can be fickle and not always reliable. I actually have a Fotodiox filter that I've used for my zeiss lenses in the past. I'm not sure why I never thought about using the Canon lenses. I've heard amazing things about Canon's new 28-20! I'm going to start researching if I can pair it with my z6II!
Oh man! It looks like only the older 2.8 version of the zoom lens is compatible. I am going to continue to do some research!
@@CatherineGuidryEducation I don't think it is possible to adapt RF to Z, otherwise I will among the first to use the RF 28-70 f/2 on my Nikon MILC. Presently, I am looking into adapting Sony E to Z for adapting lenses such as the Sigma 35 f/1.2 and Tamron 35-150 f/2-2.8.
If you are shooting Kodachrome at 25 ASA, go with the f/1.2.
Thank you for the comment!
i love D3s
Agreed! I photographed with the D3S for almost a decade. It’s an incredible camera!
I too have to agree with your choice of lens, my 50mm 1.2 on my Z9 is amazing along with my F mount 105 1.4. I don't agree with having a UV filter on this lens, the only filters I have on all my lenses is the NC Filters from Nikon, nothing else (just my opionon)
I bet the 105 is so nice! I will have to test that one out sometime!
@@CatherineGuidryEducation Its amazing on the Z9 with the FTZ 2 adapter, I don't see any need to get the Z lens version of this when it is released. I also use the Tampon 35mm F 1.4 Di USD on the Z9 again, totally amazing.
I personally don't use UV filters on any of my lenses. I noticed it affected the image quality due to light beein reflected back in that bounced out from the front element off the flat glass. I would love to try this lense out!
Great looking couple 🤪🤪
Hahaha they’re basically models ☺️😉🙌🏻
I totally agree. I splurged and I love this lens!
I was so hesitant to spend the extra money at first but the lens has turned out to be my best gear investment thus far!
I got one myself and agree it`s a great choice. I am looking forward to the 85mm F1.2S.
Same! I have a feeling that lens is going to be incredible as well!
The f1.2 is so worth it for the versatility alone. It’s permanently attached to one of my Z cameras.
I couldn’t agree more. I barely take it off on wedding days. I love the focal length, quality and speed!
Love it!! Great job!
Thank you so much!
Nikon D3s was a hell of a camera. I had 2 in the past. The new Z mirrorless system is awesome. Can't wait to get my hands on the Z9. Rock n Roll 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 btw great work on yiyur channel Catherine.
Agreed! The D3s is awesome and enjoying the new Z Mirrorless! Thanks for watching!
I still like to own modern flagship like D6 with a lightweight prime lens
Love a lightweight lens!! (Although the Z Series 50 1.2 is amazing despite its weight!)
Nice video
Thanks!
Love that 50mm f1.2 and the standard f2.8 zoom is awesome too. You could buy the battery grip for the Z6 II but then you’d be losing the size advantage. You’ll then be gaining a more comfortable grip and better battery life.
Agreed! The downfall of the grip is the weight but could definitely make it more comfortable!
Great video!!! You are a wonderful speaker! Subscribed 🥰
Thank you so much!!
Super helpful info! Thanks for sharing
You are so welcome!
The D3s is the best DSLR ever made, just 100% perfect in every way.
I couldn't agree more!
Why do you prefer the D3S to other cameras? What other cameras have you tried?
I find the images to be sharp; the camera was also fast and felt good in my hands. I've tried the D3 (lol I've been shooting for awhile), the D700, the D750, and the D850 from the Nikon line.
You rock ! I still used Nikon D700 😉
Great camera!!
U like straps ?
That must be one heavy bag
Yes! Our bags are definitely heavy but it's nice to have that variety!!
Very impressed that you're using the Nikon D3S in the year 2020! A ten-year-old camera it might be, but the D3 series (D3, D3X and D3S) were all brilliant cameras and they still are. I own a D3 and a D3X. I have considered getting a D3S to complete the line-up! Have you compared the D3S to something more modern? Like a D4S or a D750, or D810 or D850? Does the 12.1MP file size restrict you in any way?
Yes!! I actually JUST upgraded to the Nikon Z6ii two months ago and I love it!! It’s the first camera I’ve enjoyed better than the D3S since I purchased that camera!
I have the D3X and D3S. I would take a D3S over a D3.
Love this and love yall!!! Sooooo good.
The feelings are mutual; thanks Quinton!
Love this and have subscribed to your channel and would love to have you subscribe to my channel thegodminute here so we don't miss any new posts from each other ruclips.net/channel/UCWueaTClFgRYflNdBlATKDQ
nice, love the video!! Really enjoyed it. keep it up
Thanks Ben! :) You're the best!!
Wow. Impressive! Curious, why do you use film? Thanks!
Valerie DePeel film has a soft, bright/airy and timeless aesthetic that is different from digital photography. In addition, the Zeiss 80mm lens has a beautiful bokeh, especially when paired with the shallow depth of field from a medium format camera!
Hi there Cat😊 thank you very much for your video, very resourceful. I would like to know if the d3s is still relevant and if you still use it? And which lens would be you ride or die?
