B&S 17.5 HP engine rebuild
Просмотров 22 тыс.12 лет назад
Showing the results of running this engine out of oil. Previous owner ran it out of oil, and I am just rebuilding it for fun. Purchased the replacement parts cheap on eBay. There is some damage to the crankcase, but it still runs. To fix it the correct way would cost more than a new engine, so its not worth it. So this is an experiment to see how long the engine lasts with used parts and LB Wel...

    unless you have an ultrasonic cleaner to dip a carb body into, no need to remove carbs from baseplate.

    I took my magna to a shop to rebuild my carbs. $1300 later and it runs much better. Id like to think i could have done it myself after watching your video. And all the hose fittings have plastic zip ties. I think 1300 was way too much. Uggg

    Great video. However, I found on an early version (1996) the speedo needle was attached so tightly that I had to do a lot of twisting and pulling to get it off. The underlying speedo mechanism is too fragile for the stress, and I wound up with a twisted and bent speedo shaft. I also found quite a bit of play of the speedo shaft in its bearing. There was also side to side play where the speedo shaft rides in the spinning disk. I suspect that the play (at least some of it) is due to wear, and the copper speedo disk wobbles in the spinning disk and leads to the speedo screeching. It could be that cleaning and lubricating the area between the copper disk and the spinning disk would stabilize the wobble, but you have to get the speedo needle off to get there. Maybe it can be cleaned and lubricated without removing the needle and faceplate. Short version: do not yank on the speedo needle.

    5:07 is the choke plunger that he is installing and struggling with. I find it much easier to leave the actuating rod off, and install the plunger, then plunger spring, followed by the retaining cap. THEN, put the end of the rod with the spring in place into the the eyes on the carb body and then rotate the rod with the hooks catching the groove on the end of the plunger. After that, slide the plastic sleeve in from the end, and then install the linkage bracket and retaining nut on the end of the rod. I have 83 and 85 V65 Magnas.

    Do i have to seperate the carburetors? Or can you clean the floats and replace the gasket and stuff without separating all four?

    • @Addison0526
      @Addison0526 5 лет назад

      You can do that without separating but there are o-rings for the fuel tubes between the carbs that should probably be replaced. Also cleaning the fuel enrichment passages is a good idea. I just finally got mine running great without any tuning so far. The chain however sounds horrible.

    I am about to tackle this same project. The task that scares me the most is getting them all in sink with each other. Do you have any advice on that?

    • @talleddie81
      @talleddie81 5 лет назад

      I didn't remove the screws for the throttle plates, so they should be fairly close to being in sync. There is a small pin hole near the throttle plate when it closes, if you set the adjustment screws so that each carb throttle plate is in the same place relative to this hole it will be pretty close. I have not had a chance to really sync them yet, as the bike is still not done. Still trying to figure out the fuel system. Having trouble finding a really low pressure pump.

    • @Hello-cr1hl
      @Hello-cr1hl 4 года назад

      @@Addison0526 Addison you are correct in beginning at Carb #1, as it the set point in the process. The remaining carbs are all subservient to #1 setting, and must be adjusted in sequence. For" Bench Syncing" I use a thin Guitar E string(wire) or similar hard wire, to set all Throttle Valves "Butterflies." Take Guitar [(wire) #1 carb first] and insert at bottom of throat then adjust Flap until you can just barely pull it out. Repeat wire technique on the other 3. You can visibly confirm if you are proceeding in proper sequence, by watching if the previously adjusted Carb Flap changes position. If it does, you are not in sequence. Another small tip is to thoroughly spray down the carbs with degreaser ( I use Zep then SeaFoam spray) and blow down entire area with compressed air, prior to starting any removal. This obviously prevents surface dirt and debris from entering later. Also take a marker and identify and number each carb before breaking them apart. I have actually taken a razor knife and make 1-11-111-1111 nicks on the bowls and body to keep track.

    Nice video. My question is did you lubricate the speedometer cable when you had the cluster out? Mine makes noise when it's cold and I'm hoping I can just spray something down the inside of the cable from the top that will loosen it up again. Not sure what kind of lubricant I should use, something light viscosity like WD 40 or silicone, or something a bit more tacky that will stick to the inside of the cable sheath better? Also, did it look like there was enough space to spray something down the cable or is it sealed at the top? Thanks in advance! Mark

    It looks to me like the piece of the block where the cam fits in is broken off (@ 0:19). There's no way that cam bent like that without damaging the block. Is that engine still in service???
