Everything I read the last two months of 2024
Happy New Year!! Now that the holidays are over, I'm ready for spring to arrive, please. :D Another year of booktube behind me! Thanks to everyone who watches/likes/comments on my videos, or follows me on goodreads/instagram! I hope you had a good reading year, and I hope this year is even better for you. I've really enjoyed using my library this year to read books on kindle and listen to audiobooks for free, and I'd like to make even more use of it and spend less on books that I end up unhauling after reading. I'm generally a frugal person, and most books I buy are used, but still! Did you have a standout book you read last year that really stuck with you?

Another ASMR book video (but the lighting is much less aggressive than last time)

When I filmed my first ASMR video last time it was in the middle of the day and I didn't consider how blindingly bright it would be on camera, especially if you're watching at night. :P The lighting is much more pleasant in this one! October Wrap-Up 2024

My book club's pick for October was Shadow of the Gods! Not horror vibes, but still a good time. I got COVID for the first time, which was NOT fun, and I lost my sense of taste and smell for a few days which honestly terrified me, but it has come back! I'll probably read some thrillers and mysteries in November, but I also have some series that I'd love to make progress on before the end of the...

Two months worth of reads in one video! I got to pick August's book club book and I chose Vicious, and Magpie Murders was the pick for September, forgot to mention that! Hope you all had a good summer. I lament the loss of the sunshine and warm weather, but love the changing leaves and cozy/spooky Fall vibes. I'm glad I don't live someplace where I have to worry about tornados, hurricanes, or earthquakes, but I do have to deal with "wildfire season" which makes the air smoky and gross. This summer has been killer on my allergies, and it's been SO hot for weeks now. :') But loving the sunshine and long days! Read a few sequels and standalones in July, including my friend group's first book club book!...

I always intended to film a bookshelf/library tour, and I finally got around to it in June! This room brings me much joy, I hope you enjoy checking out my collection! It's a mix of read and unread books. Let me know if there a book in particular you see that I should read sooner rather than later! :)

I went on a business trip to New Mexico in June, and I kinda fell in love with the geography there! I'm from a desert climate, but it's less interesting looking haha. A different kind of video from me today! I enjoy book-related ASMR videos, and I've always wanted to try making an ASMR video myself, so I figured a book haul was good way to do it! It’s amazing how many books you can get through when you listen to an audiobook while doing other things at the same time. 😂 I would say start with Nettle & Bone for sure!! It’s her best of the ones I’ve read and is a shining example of her skill as a writer.

Because I loved the first book (House of Salt and Sorrows) so much I would recommend reading it first, and it lays out the fantasy world, but I think Roots and Ruin does stand on its own and you could read it without having read book one. There are a few references to what happens in the first book, but it’s not crucial to understand everything in the second book. But in my opinion they’re both great books so I’d say the first book is the best place to start. :)

SWTWC was supposed to be a perfect read for Halloween. I read it last year. I hated it. How I enjoyed it 20 years ago is a wonder. Metaphors, "flowery language", non-sensical phrases that just ticked me off. I wanted to enjoy it so bad but I had enough. From the Dust Returned was the same thing. I think I disliked this one even more. Bradbury's writing can come off as gibberish. I know I am not the only one who thinks this way. I mean I get the gist of the stories but damn he is soo complicated. I won't get started on The Halloween Tree. Same thing. Anyways on a positive note I did enjoy The October Country.

I've read that Til Death Do Us Bard reminded people of if Dandelion the Bard and Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher were a couple. I'm on a Witcher re-read and because it's such a beautiful but dark and tragic series, I'm hoping that Til Death Do Us Bard can be my little comfort read after.

Very harsh review. I've played all 3 games since they were released, and I've read and re-read the book many times - they work together, but they also stand alone. I think John Shirley did a magnificent job of putting together a novel based on the source material of the games. It wasn't an easy task, as in the games you are only given snippets of information. From the megalomania of Andrew Ryan and his dream to create a "city beneath the sea", a new society, to the dream taking a left turn and descending into dystopia, encompassing genetic mutation with plasmids and new technologies such as Big Daddies to the immorality of the Little Sisters, set against the scheming Frank Fontaine, with the little people like Bill McDonagh trying to give the new world a genuine go, caught in the middle. I think Shirley does a superb job. There are some really superb scenes, from the attack on the Kashmir Restaurant on New Year's Eve to Bill sacrificing himself to save his family. I think the ending was poignant and very moving, and I really wish Shirley wrote more novels in the Bioshock world, as it left me wanting more.

I don't know if you've read it but the Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries books have a good mix of the more "hot" human fae and the darker, traditional fairytale fae, and both are really well done and get at the heart of what makes fae stories interesting imho!

I feel like people either love or hate Bradbury's prose style. Personally I love it. It does take me longer to read but I enjoy taken my time thru kitschy spooky atmospheric descriptions. I also think that what writers like Louise May Alcott were for girls in their time Ray Bradbury is for boys in his time. A lot of the exposition in "Something Wicked.." is tailored to a young and old male audience. It's very much a male coming of age tale as well as a reflection on boyhood.

Fae are so popular in romantasy books, but I’m not a huge romance fan and I’m picky what about kind of fae I like. I like SJM’s worldbuilding and plotlines but am not the biggest fan of some of the character tropes she uses like “mates” and them constantly growling and things like that.

@@alibrareads4784 Yea, I'm not super into romantasy, but it's so popular.. The fact that you said there is not a lot of romance in Cruel Prince made me more interested. Thanks for that review. I've decided to come out of incognito mode to add to your stats . Understandably the numbers stay low on these obscure interest channels , so every bit helps . It'd be 1975 when I read it . Over several years I'd read Asimov's monthly essays in science readers digest, and so when I noticed one of his novels on sale , I bought it . I actually remember little of the novel except for the irritating complete changes of storyline and location which put my mother off from reading it after I'd finished. I remember there was a quirk situation with laws of physics and you refreshed my memory. It seems that he wrote from off-the-cuff quite often and I spotted such from reading his monthly essays over several years and noting he repeated himself fairly often kinda like Enid Blyton almost. I'll mention another novel that also has a quirk in laws of physics leaking in from a parallel universe , and I believe is called The Z Factor or maybe z effect. And so I came here precisely for a review after watching a decades old interview of Asimov by David Letterman. Good review and appreciated..

I also hate the sequel bait. Tbh the antagonist should've won as he's basically the damn avatar and honestly I would've loved a book about him instead of golem's and genie's mundane stuff and will-they- won't-they tiring dynamic.

Okay so first off I've watched this twice and my favorite part is where you call out your nervous energy lol. I didn't notice you were swaying back and forth but I love a good self reflection happening on video so thank you for that! My Dark Vanessa is something I see constantly and I'm not sure why I've never read it but I hope it's at the library when I go next! I really enjoyed Lolita and it sounds like this may be a little easier to read and relevant! I always love the way you lean towards older books bc I am the same way usually! I have also been trying to snag newer ones from the library too! Bookshops and Bonedust is such a stunning cover lol I am definitely gonna be getting that! I thought Legends and Lattes was super cute and I'm excited about this new one! Omg that is SO COOL you got yours signed!!!!! So a few years ago I started the audio of A Court of Thorns and Rose's and I found the main character so annoying BUT I am thinking about trying the physical book and seeing if that helps? Will you read the rest of the series do you think?
