It’s been a long time since I’ve read Octavia Butler. I’m not even sure I have any copies with me here in Mexico. They might be in a box in my dad’s garage in Los Angeles.

I decided to do a search for reviews of Shikasta (which I haven’t read in some years), and this review was at the top of the list. I have some disagreements with the review but perhaps I should make my own video. And perhaps I should give the book another reading with the criticisms in mind. I will say this: Be sure to read the introductory notes. Lessing makes clear that she had written an allegorical tale; apparently she was approached by more than a few nutters that wanted to know how to get in touch with the Canopeans after the first edition was printed. She also discusses the influences behind the writing, many of which are religious and mystical. WRT to her political consciousness, it should be noted that she is a former Marxist. Her political stance (as revealed by the series) isn’t easily categorized. It is characterized by an overall pessimism, an imperative to struggle despite that pessimism, and that struggle being towards a goal of spiritual (and possibly ethical) development. I encourage anyone taking on Shikasta to continue with the other books in the series. They are written in a variety of styles, so don’t be put off by the bureaucratic historical document format of Shikasta. Lastly a quick word about the stereotypes of evil. They are meant to be stereotypes! This is an allegory after all. Furthermore, they are the criminals from a criminal empire : the worst of the worst. They’ve escaped from their prison to Shikasta where they extract enough wealth and power to take over their parent empire. Lessing’s portrayal here is clearly political. I don’t know, maybe it’s opaque to one firmly attached to certain analytical frameworks and vocabularies. However, with a little elbow grease and imagination, I am certain one can shoehorn parts of the text into familiar categories. Lessing does something interesting in fact. She conceptualizes alienation and suffering as commodities. Anyway, I’ve spent more time than I intended on this comment. I hope that you, the reader, finds some use in it.

Overall, lots of excellent points. Really liked Chaia's stating that the very term "antisemitism" was created by people of that very persuasion, and that it is highly inaccurate, seeking to make all people of Jewish background into Semites, in particular in regard to such people who are of European background, as if they are biologically, genetically, non-Europeans of Middle East origins, "others," in flagrant disregard of reality. But i have to take issue with the wholesale dismissal of "conspiracy theory," including 9/11. The official story re 9/11 is that of an alleged conspiracy by a blind sheik in a cave in Afghanistan and 19 alleged hijackers. Somehow they got the entire US air defense system to stand down, brought down THREE WTC steel-frame hi-rises with just 2 airliners, badly damaged the Pentagon with a third airliner, with no evidence of a plane impact at the site, and flew a fourth into a field in south-central Pennsylvania, leaving a crater with no plane debris in it, though lots of such debris nearby. Official explanations of what happened at those 3 locations violate the laws of physics and observable physical evidence. Even the former chair of the U of Alaska-Fairbanks CE department, a certified Professional Structural Engineer who used to head the ASCE's Northwest Chapter, LeRoy Halsey, has taken issue with the official story, specifically in regard to WTC7. And no, it wasn't Jews or Israelis who carried out the 9/11 attacks, that's just another lie. Whatever role the Mossad played was secondary, that of a subcontractor, but one which left it as a convenient scapegoat, Jews did not, do not, run the US military/intelligence services, the only entity which could have carried out that operation. Wholesale dismissal of any notion that there are actual conspiracies just takes away from the general validity of what the three people in this video said.

The number one thing that any one person can do to address the worldwide poly crisis is to support a voluntary reduction of the human population. We need a 2% ecological footprint tax for the richest 1% of the world to hire the appropriate medical staff, and set up mobile units that could go to communities around the world, paying people to get sterilized. An organization modeled after the nonprofit World Vasectomy Day would be ideal. When considering, renewable energy options to mitigate the suffering caused by our predicament… Don’t believe the bright green lies! There is nothing renewable about so-called “renewable energy“. Energy powers ecological devastation independent of its source. If human beings actually had an endless source of free clean green energy… Which does not exist it would only fuel the acceleration of the destruction of the biosphere. Deforestation, ocean depletion, habitat loss, desertification, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, groundwater depletion, global warming, overpopulation, rampant pollution, and the six mass extinction would all continue to accelerate. This is not a supply problem… It’s a demand problem! Fewer humans equals less suffering for all life on earth! We really need to promote government and nonprofit funded vasectomies and tubal ligations. I realize that it is extremely unlikely that governments will pass a tax on the rich to pay for voluntary sterilization, and you may not be able to contribute, or participate in a nonprofit that funds voluntary sterilization. However, you can discuss with others whether it is ethical to bring a child onto a planet in the midst of global industrial, and ecological collapse. We can talk about the ways that we can mitigate the consequences of ecological overshoot, or people can stay silent, remain ignorant, live in denial, continue to celebrate procreation, and contribute to the ensuing misery. We can either reduce our population by choice… Or we can let nature do it in her unmerciful way. it’s biology 101. A life that is never brought into existence, is a life that will not have to experience the wretchedness of the unequivocal, impending collapse. #WorldVasectomyDay

And even though the claims are that planting trees is the least form of action for climate change mitigation, I believe we still need to restore the green because before the concrete jungle came to exist, vegetation already existed. And nature was a balance so why should do an imbalance. #onetreeatatime

Thank you Solomon. It seems to me that planting trees is the single most effective action that individuals can take to help mitigate the worst impacts of climate. In the long run, it's probably the only thing that holds the significant potential to reverse climate change.

Growing crops without petroleum based fertilisers is the only way to go. Only if half the population at least are producing food we won't be at the machines. We have to use our own manure as fertilisers if there is no manure. Compost making is the most revolutionary activity there is.

Guerilla gardening is the way forward. If every person who chooses a different consumer path would also produce food and learn about that it would also help.

The great lakes of Africa are being drained for crop production. People won't be able to fish there anymore because of this.
