180 watt Infrared panel heater

My thoughts on this small slim 180 watt infrared panel heater. 600mm x 300mm and just 22mm deep this is a very compact little heater for a small room, shed or garage. I ran this off a 20ah battery and managed a little over 1 hour 25 minutes. The inverter was not brilliant so could have got longer with my Victron.

    Infrared isn't meant to be the "fast" heat that's generated from a fan based heater. It gently heats up the thermal mass of the building, like walls, ceiling and objects. The idea is to keep it on all of the time, controlled by a thermostat, and let the building warm up, then, it saves money by "topping up" the lost heat

      @@justiceonly9105 Hi, thanks for the comment. I lose between 20 to 30% of the energy by having them flat against the wall. I originally did have one of them tilted but you had to keep altering the angle every summer and winter to get maximum results. This way it’s the same power output all year round. Marginally better in winter when the sun is low here in the UK. Hope that helps.

    I also have wall mounted solar panels. But I have chosen a slightly different approach. The top side of the panel frame is simply hanging in a h-shaped aluminum profile, which is screwed to the wall with some plastic spacers that resemble huge washers (plastic 10 mm thick). The lower side is then pop riveted to an L-shaped profile which is screwed to the wall the same way as the h-shaped profile. This way, air can circulate behind the panels for cooling and moisture protection, and the pop rivets are also an anti- theft protection.

    Hello. I have question: does the panel still heat a room if there is something blocking it like a sofa for example? Or does the blocking object null the heater completely? Sofa should radiate the heat eventually into surroundings or does it not?

    • @Digaroo4427
      @Digaroo4427 8 месяцев назад

      Hi, and thank you for your comment. These kind of heaters are more aimed at heating the body directly rather than heating objects in the room. Having said that the room will slowly and eventually get warm by other things absorbing the infrared. They tend not to heat rooms as quickly as other more conventional sources like radiators and such, as they don’t warm up the air directly. Hope this helps? Experience tells me that the best placement for this kind of panel would ideally be on the ceiling directly above the main area where people are.

    Hello, I have a question about these heaters that I cannot find the answer to. I am trying to find a solution for our Murphy bed. The bed is in our flat that's on an outside wall in a Grade II listed building with no insulation. There is a radiator but it's on the other wall and the bed blocks the heat from penetrating though when it's closed up as it is during the day. There is a small gap running inside the bed casing where I could possibly install this heater. Would it be possible to have the infrared heater on when the bed is closed or is there a possibility that it could burn the bed linens? Thanks.

    • @Digaroo4427
      @Digaroo4427 9 месяцев назад

      Hi and thanks for the comment. Whilst I can’t give exact advice without seeing the setup you’ve outlined, on what I understand I would say placing this type of heater where you are thinking is not advisable and could pose a fire risk. If you look at the fire triangle (heat, fuel and oxygen) then I’d recommend you don’t place it there. Hope this helps.

    • @cp1236

      I think you're right. I just spoke to someone who sells heaters and he recommended I buy a heated mattress cover as that's designed to have things put on top of it. The other thing I was thinking of getting was a tubular heater with a guard that would sit at the bottom of the wall bed where there is a gap or, eventually, underfloor heating. Thanks for your quick reply and have a great day! @@Digaroo4427

    I just saw this. I have my system set up with twenty batteries from Autozone. They're not the same batteries as yours, but I noticed when my freezer comes on, it takes an initial shot of power to start the compressor, that seems to be more than it should be. When I first got the freezer, I had sixteen batteries, and what I have noticed, as I added batteries, this initial surge effects a smaller voltage drop now. What happens is, each battery can only deliver so many amps. So when the load comes on, the voltage drops at the battery side of the inverter too much if there's not multiple batteries. It's just more noticeable with the cheaper batteries like I have. What is probably happening to yours is the voltage drops momentarily, so the voltage coming out of the inverter drops too. The two things I would try are some kind of big capacitors to keep the voltage up until the compressor has time to get running, and you should have a Kill A Watt meter to tell you what the voltages and wattages are starting and running. I used a 24 volts hookup to help with the amps, which can be pretty high on startup of electric motors. I started with cheap marine batteries which are not really optimum for solar, but as they go bad, Im changing them out with heavier amp hour true deep cycle batteries. I have four of those now. As long as I keep twenty of them, they work pretty well. I had to replace one about five days ago. It was one of the first ones I bought. I had four batteries and three solar panels. Ever since I changed it out, the voltage has been higher at the end of the day. So it was probably damaged a long time ago. I bought snaller amp hours batteries at first. They were eighty five amp hours. The ones Im replacing with are 105 ah. Right now I have a thousand amp hours of battery bank. When all the smaller ones are changed out, there will be 1120 ah. When my freezer comes on, theres a barely noticeable blink of the lights, where if there's not enough start up amps, it will be a lot more noticeable and longer blinking of the lights. By the time it starts to blink, the freezer is already running. I would have and maybe should have gotten better batteries at the start, but I was trying to save up enough for an inverter charger. It's almost six a.m., and battery bank voltage ⚡ is 25.18. They'll be charging again in ninety minutes. Everyone's systems are different. Don't be surprised if you need more batteries though, to get the desired results. I used to wonder why owner's manuals for an inverter would show it being hooked up to eight batteries. My freezer just came on, the voltage dropped eleven hundreths of a volt. The refrigerator came on too, another nine hundreths.

    Keep playing i run on a flat roof 2 banks of 6 x 120w panels and one bank of 4 x 250w panels by way of 2 600w grid tie's and a 1000w grid tie along side a bank of 5 x 35 amp hour batterys golf buggy bat's. This was to take the sting out of the constant 200w -250w it takes to run my koi pond and the 400w norm house load. It all works very well but peak of a good the day summer i can make 1500w + peak hours so if the batterys are charged i lose back to the grid this gives me about 8KWH to 10KWH made on a good day way to much but the extra watt's keeps me in the black on more of the bad days and winter. The 1000w 4 250W panels and micro grid tie inverter is the way to go and can be setup for as little as £450 - £500 with second hand panels and give a 4 year money back on its setup. the cheap micro grid tie's are the weak point and only last if you give them extra fan cooling. As said have fun play around it will save you money
