Enchainment (2022) Climbing all NZ's 3000m peaks in one continuous push
Inspired by the human-powered enchainments achieved in Europe, in early summer 2021, Alastair McDowell & Hamish Fleming set out on a quest to enchain New Zealand’s 24 highest mountains above 3000 metres in a continuous 31-day push. This would be a transalpine journey, from west coast jungle to high-alpine summits, traversing some of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscapes. But with the clock ticking down, fatigue mounting and storms arriving, would they be able to complete the project before their time, weather & luck ran out?

Просмотров 2,5 тыс.Год назад
After a rest day at Lyell Hut, we set off at 3am to get up the Lyell icefall before the sun starts cooking it, up over Rangitata Col, down and up to Lambert Col, skirt across the edge of the Garden of Allah, across the Garden of Eden towards Perth Col where we aim for Disappointment Saddle and down the Havelock glacier. A glorious 21 hour day, one to remember.

Walking up the Tasman Moraine & Glacier, Aoraki Mount Cook, New Zealand

Just before Christmas we had 3 days spare so we headed up the Tasman to try and climb a rock route on Malte Brun, we massively underestimated how long the approach would take with heavy packs & the trip turned out to be a suffer fest albeit with great scenery.

Winner of the ‘Grass Roots’ Award at the 2021 NZ Mountain Film Festival Four Canterbury based climbers set off into the heart of the New Zealand Southern Alps to explore a rarely climbed peak with a hope to climb a new route. Their journey takes them through the infamous ‘Garden of Eden’ ice plateau, across ‘The Great Unknown’ and through the thick, wild vegetation of the West Coast bush.

Love you video Nick, nice to be able to tick this off. I'm not a climber but would like to see this peak. Are you aware of a tramping route to a view point?
I was in many of these places in the 70's and I'm just astonished at the standards now being achieved. Now far too old and with a severe autoimmune condition, anything at this scale is beyond my reach now, but your last words are still right - it is just a matter of defining the challenge.
I hope you had more than one beer. i climbed in Mt Cook in the mid 80s . Only dreamed of this level of skill -well done. Thank you for showing me what I missed out on 🙂
Great achievement and the film, loved it, congratulations!
Is Alistair using the Petzl Leopard crampons?
Thank you, enjoyed ! What was your thinking on day 1, when you turned and came back to base ? The weather was perfect, why not stay up the mountain, and summit the next day ? This is only a cutesy question, with absolutely no weight on it. As I am totally unexperienced. Just after your take. Once again, great video ⛏⛏❄❄
Pretty Inspiring asa bored wellingtonian!
Nick where was the bridge you paddled under. I'm completely bamboozled as to where it is.
Love your vids brother
Tracks may have gone to Garderner Hut ?
Epic
katherine ryan?
Damm this really puts your life in perspective. Well done alastair and hamish
Looks like a great adventure. Thanks for sharing. I saw Mt Cook from the Eastern side a few years ago and wanted to know what was at the top. You have showed me that! I still wanna climb it, looked like a slog 😂
What's the big aluminium bar that can be seen on on your packs quite often, something to build an anchor with? I've never seen that in the European Alps before
Sorry you didn't get to the summit, but there's always another day - nice little video though, you seem to have enjoyed yourselves.
Wow guys! Extreme weather for a pole tent! Well done!
Hey mate. does this track have a name, what’s the best way to get there? Also what’s the best time of year for these same weather conditions? Cheers
It’s begins from the Tasman Lake car park, then take the Ball Hut Route, once you arrive at Ball Hut it is just essentially wilderness so need to find your own way (and have the associated skills to mitigate the risks of that environment- lots of rock fall, glacier travel etc etc)
Waa that green rope yours or was already there? Why they don't make an equipped path with chain?
Did you track your route im interested in your route.
No sorry, we didn’t
@@nick_kowalski_film and I jus wanna say your a huge inspiration for me. I’m only 15 and I’m really getting into mountaineering now thanks to you I hope to climb mt cook one day
I climbed for a month back in '89 (Cook,Tasman,Aspiring) and it only rained one day which happen while we were traveling on the bus to Aspiring. I guess you can say we lucked out on the weather. lol

Beautiful NZ ❤❤❤
That shot at 0:59 looked familiar, like I had seen it in an old blockbuster movie from 2002
This deserves more recognition. Unreal
Wow , you have seen more of NZ than i , a born and bred!!
Just read this story in Ray Salisbury's book Epic. Truly an Epic Adventure!
Incredible guys simply incredible!
My feat isn't climbing mountains it's saving the same amount of cash as the height of every mountain on earth but in many ways it was just as hard!
Awesome great achievement guys thank you for sharing the video, very cool to watch.
15:29 wheres the rope!? 😮
You fellas could not be more low key kiwi if you tried love it 10/10
I actually met that friend of yours with the homemade poles, we were in French ridge hut that night.
So its true tapuae-o-uenuku still has glaciers on it?
Guys, what conditions do you expect if that was horrendous snow? 5cm for skinning and what, 15cm-25cm for walking? How much better do you need it? You either ski in snow or on ice, either way you will have a bit of something, won't you? Sorry, a bit disappointed with the moaning about what I would say are amazing conditions....NZ or not

@@NathanK13 they obviously haven't been backcountry much. All good. But don't blame the conditions, or the gear...

I climbed Newton and a bunch of others in the 90s. Came in via Rakaia and went out via Godley. Good on ya boys!!
So good!!
Great real adventure. Congratulations for the success as planned. Do as much as you possibly can in the great Southern NZ mountains and wherever else in the World. Life is short. I know it in reality. I am now 80 years old and re member, with pleasure my 5 months climbing season in NZ way back in 1971. I wish you alll a great life.
Thanks for the comment, really brought a smile to my face
The important thing is that these boys had a good time in the outdoors communing with nature!
What an incredible climbing achievement; superb film.
Did you guys need ice tools to climb up or was an ice axe with crampons sufficient?
Two tools are definitely required
@@nick_kowalski_film Copy thanks!
You guys are supermen ‼️🔥👍
Lets go and burn tonnes and tonnes more Kerosene and fuck things up some more. The glacial retreat at Mt Cook is very obvious for to see and an obvious sign of climate change. Why do you still do this. Morons.
This video gives me goosebumps!!!! Thank you guys for sharing!
I’m a climber from the PNW in USA, wife and I had our first kid recently so I’m taking some time off climbing for dad life (until the little dude can rope up). I stumbled on your channel and absolutely love your videos and all the vids from NZAT, awesome stuff, keeping me pumped during the change of pace! Will have to visit your Southern Alps, reminds me a lot of climbing in our North Cascades. Thanks for posting mate, keep it going!
Awesome video you guys!
Did you guys also do the 12 day Stewart Island/Rakiura circuit? if you haven't, I would thoroughly recommend it. Best to pace yourself through and do 1 hut per day. I wouldn't recommend skipping any huts because it's tough!
I haven’t been to Stuart Island but Ed has done that circuit I believe!
You had great weather for the track. That's awesome
