SONIC DIVE part 8: “Exhibit C” Jay Electronica Welcome to part 8 of SONIC DIVE: my new video series that tackles songs, songwriters and their legacy. “Exhibit C” is a song by American hip hoprecording artist and record producer Jay Electronica. The song, produced by Just Blaze, was released to iTunes on December 22, 2009, as an EP with explicit, clean and instrumental versions. Sampled Billy Stewart’s “Cross My Heart” 1968 Despite not having an album or major label support, the song received airplay on stations like WQHT. Jay has stated that the song was produced in only 15 minutes for the purpose of premiering a new song on Angela Yee’s show on Shade 45. The lyrics reference a time when Jay was homeless in New York City. The EP cover art is a tinted photograph of inventor Nikola Tesla sitting in the Colorado Springs experimental station with his “Magnifying Transmitter” This was his “Magnifying Transmitter,” shooting sparks through the air at more than 4 MILLION VOLTS. SONIC DIVE Part 7: Carole King (and songs you may not know she wrote) American singer and songwriter Carole King has written or co-written over 400 songs that have been recorded by more than 1,000 artists. Already an accomplished pianist by the time she turned 10, King began writing a multitude of songs by her early teens She attended Queens College in New York, where she met Neil Sedaka, Paul Simon and Gerry Goffin-who became Her first husband and cowriter Carole King and her first husband, lyricist Gerry Goffin, wrote doo-wop and rock 'n' roll songs in New York City in the 1960s, many of which became hits and got them signed to Aldon Music empire, where they wrote "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" for The Shirelles "Take Good Care of My Baby" for Bobby Vee "Up on the Roof" for the Drifters “You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Woman)" for Aretha Franklin “Goin' Back" for Dusty Springfield (and later The Byrds) "Pleasant Valley Sunday" for the Monkees "The Reason" for Celine Dion King famously documented her relationship's collapse in her 1967 solo song, "The Road to Nowhere." In 1968, she moved with her two daughters to Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles to join fellow musicians James Taylor and Joni Mitchell, among others, in a creative songwriting community She met Toni Stern, a female lyricist, with whom she wrote the single, "It's Too Late," a song that would later become one of her biggest hits as a singer. Here are some fascinating tidbits about this song and how it came about: During the early eighties, Khan was in the midst of a jazzy, experimental phase. Her 1982 album Echoes of an Era failed to find much traction with audiences. She needed a hit to keep Warner Bros sweet. Khan and her producer Arif Mardin decided a Prince track would give them the modern edge they were looking for. They opted for I Feel For You. “I Feel for You” Won the Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female in 1985 Chaka Khan’s version of the song features Melle Mel of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and Stevie Wonder on harmonica This 1984 Prince cover features Melle Mel of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five rapping the classic “Ch-ch-ch-chaka-chaka-chaka Khan” intro Stevie Wonder plays the chromatic harmonica, and the song also includes a sample from one of his first hits, “Fingertips” Part 2 (The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie 1963 album) Khan’s association with Prince didn’t end there.
