I'm currently in a big writing rut. I haven't written consistently since July. I've written here and there ever since then. I wanna say it's procrastination but it's way more than that because this has affected other areas of my life, not just writing. I would say it's burnout from life and depression. I'm glad I'm not the only one struggling to write consistently. I don't really see a lot of people talking about it and how to deal with it. I often try to set goals and think I'll be able to follow it, my rut magically disappearing. False. I never knew how to refill my creative well. I'll take some notes from you and try going on a walk every day (even though I don't live near a forest which is a bummer 😅) Edit: I'm an authortuber documenting my writing journey ❤✨

I am so in awe the entire outline just fell out of your brain when you sat down to brainstorm! I can definitely relate with the anxiety about not knowing what to do about the next books in the series feelings, I think if anything I'm working on book 1 revisions slower on purpose so I don't have to deal with the later books 🙈

My plans for my next draft is to finish my own personal education plan I've set for myself (reading writing advice books & watching writing advice YT videos), brainstorm new ideas, re-plot/plan my book, and then start draft 3 January 1st!

I am absolutely a plotter!!! But then, I let things happen organically if they need to. But now I need to re-plot almost my entire 3rd draft because the current structure is NOT working lol

I never do character profiles either. They reveal themselves to me during the writing process. And they always ignore my "outline," and take the story in new (and way better) directions.

I was very lucky to get a work from home job, and adding in daily solo walks has been a game changer for my mental health and creative well!

I occasionally enjoy a story with an unlikable character if they are interesting and complex. The Picture of Dorian Grey is a good example of one. Dorian is on a path that can only lead to destruction and when it finally happens it feels just.

Your take on characters is SO real. My characters walk into my brain on random fine Sundays and demand my attention. Do I know who they are? Kind of. Do I know why they’re there? Absolutely not. Do I HAVE to write to find out what their deal is? I am legally obliged to or they will haunt me until the end of my days. I love it. Fantastic video and I’m so glad I found someone on here that has my same flavor of crazy when it comes to writing lmao. Best of writing luck to you!

My heroines always come to me fully formed

I usually write flash fiction pieces containing little everyday snippets of the life of my characters from all across the timeline. sometimes these scenes happen before the plot, sometimes during, sometimes after, I never know. These pieces tell me more about the characters and help me find their voice^^

I'm so intrigued by this loop hole you are describing, that sounds incredibly crafty to write and like such a cool experience for the reader! I also relate to the desire and yet struggle to craft characters an audience will love/care for.

I totally agree about characters coming fully formed! Loved this insight into your process. It's made me realise I need to print out more. I tend to endlessly edit on the screen, but I'd feel more organised using printed chapters in a similar way to you, I think. And wow, isn't Arizona beautiful, such scenery! So very different to my damp, seaside home in the south of the UK!

4:00 - do you know that scene in The Neverending Story when he’s covered by a blanket reading the ancient book by flashlight in a thunderstorm in a dusty old attic?! I think that might be my natural writing habitat. ….i think about that scene all.the.time. And it’s what this section made me think of 🙃

When you said you don't think cutting words is ever a waste, I IMMEDIATELY thought of this Erin Bow quote: “No writing is wasted. Did you know that sourdough from San Francisco is leavened partly by a bacteria called lactobacillus sanfrancisensis? It is native to the soil there, and does not do well elsewhere. But any kitchen can become an ecosystem. If you bake a lot, your kitchen will become a happy home to wild yeasts, and all your bread will taste better. Even a failed loaf is not wasted. Likewise, cheese makers wash the dairy floor with whey. Tomato gardeners compost with rotten tomatoes. No writing is wasted: the words you can't put in your book can wash the floor, live in the soil, lurk around in the air. I loved hearing about your publishing journey! 🥰 I've always leaned more towards self-publishing, but have been considering hybrid publishing more and more lately, since one of the books I'm working on I think would work better traditionally. Not that I have any finished books that are anywhere close to publication lol 🙃

You've captured beautifully one of my most core struggles... and I say that as a person who isn't operating in much of a creative capacity. Working a 9-5 which is really more of an 8 to 6 and then trying to find any ounce of creative energy is so difficult and I haven't been able to do what makes the most sense... start getting up before dawn to follow my hearts desires. It's quite an exasperating dilemma. Thank you for sharing.

Loved your book. Actually gifted your book to family and a dear friend. All had wonderful comments on the writing style and they were very impressed with how real and relatable the characters were. I am looking forward to any and all books you publish. As my son would say, "You Rock".

It's definitely a constant adjustment to balance life, work, and creative endeavors. Also: yes to booting short form content. I dislike it, but see how successful it helps some people become, so it feels like a necessary evil. I'm an indie author and otherwise creative person! An 11 day streak is nothing to sneeze at!

Keep on going! I have always had a passion for writing and trying to figure out my creative side as well. I started created content on YT recently and really like it, but have also fallen into a rut due to burnout from my full-time job. We never know what lies ahead but I have faith it will grow into something more.

I also struggle with being able to read other people's books while writing my own books, which is honestly a problem cause I can't learn to be a better writer if I'm not reading. But having to edit other people's books while working on your own sounds like that problem but 100 times harder to manage. I'm so happy for you and impressed that you managed to find a solution that seems to work for you! Also love the fact that you are staying away from short form content! I try to avoid it too, but there's always a little voice inside my head saying I'll never be able to successfully sell my books and make a living as a writer if I don't get myself on tiktok.
