Diesel powered subspace generators...I love it. So steampunk. I'm reminded of Spinrads "The Void Captains tale" also employing a specialized human navigator in a trance like state. Also a lost ship story when the Pilot dies.

I personally always presumed that seven league boots meant that a man could move at a speed perhaps similar to a horse up to a distance of 7 leagues before losing their efficacy, much as described in the Jack Vance story. That seems to make more sense to me.

A story written in the style of the times I suppose. Other than having a thinking emotional computer, nothing else seems futuristic. The name brands of the cars stayed as they were since the 50s. Giving a computer female or male patterns of thought seems odd. I see little benefit of having a machine that needs emotions to do the job at hand. I suppose he just wanted to make the story more fanciful by doing so. Why there wasn't mentioned any full scale hunting of the Devil Car by authorities seems out of place. Maybe Elon Musk will be the fool that ends up giving self driving cars a brain that can think and feel and doom us all................. nah he's not able to make the simplest type of self driving machine and never will before he goes bankrupt. 😂

Wonderful story

Never read any of Zelazny and am enjoying it so far. Bringing back to life old stories similar to the man in this story bringing the city back to life, if only for a short while.

I did not expect that ending

Zelazny was so talented.

I heard the full novel and wanted to hear the original short story. Holy crap what an original and engaging story. I wish I could one day conceptualize something half this good.
