Why Didn't The USA Embrace The Inline 6?
Просмотров 99514 дней назад
I have always found the fact that the United States seemed to be the sole market that never fully embraced the inline 6 for high-performance applications. Europe, Asia, and even Ford of Australia took the inline 6 to amazing heights for performance cars. Why were we so focused on the V8. Let's find out.

The Ford RS200 was a revolutionary machine, with all wheel drive, insane specific output, and radical styling. Built to compete in Group B rally, it was a bit late to the party. While it was a short lived part of Ford Racing, its impact can still be felt today. I've always loved this car, and Group B, so I made a video dedicated to this engineering and design masterpiece.

I wanted to verify my tune was safe, so I headed to Force Engineering in Plainwell Michigan to have Tyler put it through it's paces, make sure it's safe, and see how much power it actually makes. My 1996 Dodge Viper has an engine built circa 2004 by a company called west coast vipers, which is now closed. They claimed this engine build package to be 650 flywheel horsepower. This car has a package from West Coast Viper (defunct and less than reputable company) that claims 650 flywheel hp, but with a trap speed of 124 and a race weight of 3550lbs... it's more like 520 flywheel hp. So I did some digging, and came up with a plan!

Update: After service the car came back missing a center cap. They called the tech and he said it was not there when they got the car. I immediately told them I had a video of the car in their service bay w...

I forgot you could have gotten a tempo with a V6. Doesn't sound half bad
Gawd damn gawd dammit I hope they stay cheap because I'll get me another one and maybe re sell it.. Hellz yeah
Thanks!
I have owned a ton of cars... The funnest one I have owned is a little Yellow 96 LT-4 car. These things are like go-karts.
Nice car. Funny how he down plays manual climate control.. I had a 87 and now own a 82 both with auto climate control (punch button). Wish it they were manuals, less things to go bad, especially the contacts on the buttons. The 87, early c4, half of the controls did not work.
I happily drove my '92 LT1 coupe 11 years before I sold it. Invest, save or spend. You can't take it with you.
1st gear has nice torque but so underwhelming when you have to shift right when it hits
can you adjust the rear height by moving the nut on the new bolt...it looks really low now.
It's perfectly level, but you can raise the rear by tightening the nut further :)
The six cylinders engines was where we came from. The V8 engines were marketed in the 1950s as the future, the elite. If you did not have a V8, you weren't crap.
No mention of the popularity of turbo 4s and v6s as the v8 alternatives in the US?
This is strictly about the inline 6 versus V8. The Turbo 4 was really only chrysler, the svo/xr4ti, and things like the cobalt ss up until the 2010. It was never our core performance offering. The only time a turbo V6 was used was buick, and syclone/ typhoon. But this video is just about how the inline 6 specifically was not developed to it's full potential. It has objective advantages.
@ the v8 wasn’t the only reason the US didn’t embrace the inline 6, though it could be argued that for certain vehicles the inline 6 stayed very much alive, Jeep 4.0 and the Ford 300. That has more to do with emissions and other options in the economy offerings where the inline 6 sat in the us market, as well as packaging concerns. And instead of developing new inline 6s, the US market went towards the 4s and v6s. Turbo fours were offered also in the pre 1985 Mustang GT, Thunderbird super coupes in the fox platform, as well as supercharged v6 offerings in the MN12 platform, the Taurus SHO was a High performance V6 offering, Buick, and Pontiac offered supercharged 3800s in the Regal and Grand Prix as well.
No mention of the 4.2 GM Atlas? Common man I thought we were friends
🤣🤣 I'm speaking mostly in regard to high performance applications. I have seen turbocharged atlas engines in F bodies though, and it's sick.
I am 73 years old and I remember that inline 6 six cylinder engines were the common base engine for American cars during the 1950s and the 1960s. With these cars the V8 engine was the more powerful optional engine. My parents owned two cars that had inline 6 cylinder engines. They owned a 1956 Chevrolet BelAir which had the base inline 6 cylinder engine instead of the optional V8 engine. Also they owned a 1966 Rambler American that had an inline 6 cylinder engine.
Absolutely, but development never advanced beyond that. My point is they were never used for high performance applications. But there were many great work house inline 6s here!
You can absolutely daily a c4. Why couldn't you? Look at it from this prospective. At 1 point in time people were daily driving big block corvettes. 426 Hemi's, 440 six packs, 454's, 455's, big block fords. All on relatively small bias ply tires, year-round. When I had my 85 vette with a 383 in it I drove it for a couple years, year-round. That was a fun winter toy. Tight rebuilt posi rear, would do donuts like no other.
US vehicles had slant sixes for at least 90 years. Including the 300 Ford straight 6, the most reliable engine ever made.....
The 225 chrysler, the 4.0 chrysler/jeep, and 300 inline 6 are all great work horses. But they were not high performance engines, which is the focus in this video.
@@mattquerio there’s also the Pontiac OHC six which had the first reinforced timing belt
What year is that c4?
1996 LT4 :)
My dads old Dodge Aspen station wagon had a slant 6, I was still going strong when MN winters finally had the body rusted through...
They were a tank of an engine!
I have to disagree about your automatic theory my wife's car is a rare Corvette factory coupe Black Rose metallic paint arctic white sports leather seats and it is a factory Z07 car with 20,000 original miles fully loaded every option. It is documented of being one of one built they made one automatic and 1 six-speed. It is documented with build sheet and window sticker. Car has no modifications only thing it's been changed are the tires and battery.
And it's still worth less than a 6 speed Z07 in any color.
I beg to differ just because it's a 6-speed doesn't mean it's more valuable. especially when you have the only one built in an automatic. I have had over 30 Corvettes in my lifetime and I am a collector of many cars I believe ours and the right market will sell for a hell of a lot more then what people think@@mattquerio
Really cool insights on driving experience and ownership, I would have thought would be impossible to find a reasonable price on a set of tires for these.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, the cheap tires have been great so far.
Why not go for a ZR1? Especially as many time C4 owner, the premium is negligible for the performance/special factor
Well, you can get a mint LT4 for 15k tops, for a ZR1 you'd have to double that number, and often times a bit more than that. The bargain factor of a ZR1 isn't as good as the LT4. That said, I'd love to get my hands on a ZR1 to hear that LT5 sing.
My second vehicle ever was a chevy truck with a straight six, people scoffed at it because it wasnt a v8 but I liked it because it had enough power to haul my ski doo and was better on gas.
The 292 inline 6 was a great work horse.
To answer the question in the title… We didn’t embrace it because it’s not a V-8! 🇺🇸😎
Lol well that is quite the simplification, isnt it?
Fun cars, I have a '77
I agree! Best proper classics for the money.
I'm sorry to say I get salty if I drive something less than a V8
My only 2 vehicles are a v8 and a v10, so no hate from me!
You had the straight 6 in the jeep wrangler for years. That's a bulletproof engine.
Fantastic engine. I had 2. But I'm focusing more on the inline 6 use in high performance applications. But I agree, the 4.0 and the Ford 300ci inline 6 were both TANKS!
A straight 6 was also an option in early mustangs up to 67, if memory serves. Those were solid engines, but the transmission weren’t great. Very lightweight.
imo main difference between the markets is purely and simply gas prices, we here in Europe are plagued by people that want to tax us to death, so we get gas that is on average 2 times more expensive than in the US. if that isn't enough there are in most countries heavy taxes based on engine displacement, all this makes it so people are stuck with low displacement engines, thus the focus on getting more out of smaller engines. So its not that americans should embrace the I6s its that america should embrace DOHC, and those other technologies that increase power / liter. its slowly changing with the coyote Engine showing what can be done.
I can see the fuel price, but many of the fire breathing 6s aren't that great on gas. I do know the Europeans are taxed on displacement so that is a big thing too.
A 4.2l LS based inline 6 would be sexy . With equal length headers & 2 small turbo’s per 3. Cilinders . All fed into a chonky intake . That would be quite the engine . Balanced & fast .
There have been guys to build the GM atlas inline 6 with turbos. I've seen one in a 4th gen F body.
@@mattquerionilvac
Did you research this at all? American auto makers had inline 6s but figured out early on that you can get more displacement, and therefore more power potential, with less material use and in a smaller physical size with V engines. Btw, Europeans have V8s too.
Inline 6s can be used in high performance applications, see BMW B58, S54, etc. But we have never pursued a high performance gasoline inline 6. Only NOW is Stellantis beginning to offer one, but only for emissions compliance because their V8s won't meet requirements. I'm aware Europeans have V8s, Aston, and Italy as well. My point is Europe developed the inline 6 and made some of the best engines of all time. Truly some of the best. We focused on V8s for performance applications. We will call our definitive split at 1955 for the sake of performance applications with the SBC 265, and the 292 being used in the Thunderbird. The V8 is literally what saved the Corvette. GM tired again with the OHC Pontiac inline 6 that ended up making 230hp or so with a 4bbl, Jay Leno has a Firebird equipped with this engine. It went nowhere. It's fascinating, and it really is a cultural difference.
@@mattquerioChrysler was developing their slant 6 performance parts line through the 70s. But V engines just make more sense for in a performance application for weight, weight distribution, and cener of gravity. That's why BMW switched to the V8 in the E90 M3. Another thing to note is that an inline 6 was offered in most American cars untill the EPA introduced CAFE ratings. The mass downsizing in the late 70s and early 80s in search for MPGs meant not wasting weight on inline engines with more than 4 cylinders. We then saw high performance I4s and V6s allong with those V8s.
I would love to do a video like this with the pastiche of engine configurations popular in Australia. From the old school Ford and Holden V8s, the recognition of straight sixes with the Ford Barra, to the continued desire for anything diesel and 4x4 and the cult obsession of Japanese turbo 4s and straight sixes!
Aussies did it right. You guys got the great Ford Cleveland V8s in the 70s, great V8s from Holden and Ford, as well as sexy engines like the Barra. Truly the melting pot of automobiles you guys have!
@@mattquerioDo not say a sentence like that without mentioning the Hemi 265.
American cars weigh as much as 2 tons more than European cars! Huge v8's were needed to haul the extra tonnage!
Haha not always true, a BMW 635csi and a Corvette weighed the same amount in the mid to late 80s.
You left out Toyota and Datsun with the Supra and Z range. My 1983 Supra had the best motor I even owned, and that included the flat six 930 I drove for 3 decades.
I focused mostly on Europe, and I do agree. I was going to do a video on the influence on European and Asian engines, highlighting some of the units you are mentioning, as well as the use of the rotary, specifically in the FD RX7 and it's insane specific output for the time, as well as the NSX and how it was able to take on the Ferrari 348 with a V6, and arguably be the better car
Isn't it Ironic that America primarily use I6 diesels over the road, while the Scania V8 diesel is king in Europe.
Not really. European trucks are limited in size while North American trucks aren't really. Just makes sense for the European trucks to use the more compact engine layout.
Good point!
That is interesting.
Do 411 gears then redo video
Gears compliment the LT4 nicely, I had one in the past with long tubes and 4.11s. It ran 13.1 @ 109.1 on street tires with no effort. Would have went high 12s with drag radials.
Sounds nice!
I agree, they put together a nice package. Especially considering the bargain price!
This video inspired me to purchase a set of 315/30r19’s for my Lexus RC-F! Thank you and love the sick viper ACR!
Hey I am glad I could help. I think you will be pleased, especially for the money! And thank you for the kind words!!! It isn't an ACR but the wheels certainly give it that look!
Cute snake car. I have a VTEC Honda that will make you cry tears. When I fly by ur lil vipey I'm gonna blow you a kiss buddy boy.
I love you channel but your car is running stock motor times and trap speeds. I doubt you have 650 HP with 124 trap speed. Is that a windshield cracked? What gears do you have?
The car is not 650hp. I've had it on the dyno, and I mentioned that in the video. It's about 550 at the flywheel, the dyno said 490whp... but dynos are tuning tools. These ran 12.20 @116-118 stock. With a 1.8' 60ft this car should go 11.45 or so, it has trapped 124.24. Keep in mind these are all dragy runs with slow shifts. On a good surface with these tires I'll run at the track in spring, my guess is 11.45 @ 125.5 or so. I haven't ran it since we tuned it. But it's about 7-9mph over stock for a 2nd gen GTS. No the windshield isn't cracked, you're seeing the integrated antenna that is in the windshield. Stock 3.07 gears.
@@mattquerio dude im an idiot, sorry I missed you saying that my computers speakers suck and I could barely hear the video. Your right on the numbers that makes more sense, awesome car and you have to be happy with it so far for the price. Haha it's all good the audio was droned out bad!
Get it to a track! Or sell it.
I'll get it to a track when they open, for sure. I'll never sell it though.
@mattquerio this car is to much for you. A wheelchair is not good. Stick with the c4.thanks
I'm trying to duck to look under the sun visor. 🙄🤦
🤣🤣🤣🤣 sorry man I really did my best!
Yes. Yes they can. No problem. My C4 LT4 was plenty of car, plenty of storage, plenty of power, and plenty of range.
In the right conditions they can do everything most people need!
Very good. One thing I'd like to add is that in Europe (Britain specifically) that tax and car insurance was based on displacement not power output. So for a rough example a fox body 5.0 Mustang would have worked well on our roads. But even with a Ford blue collar price tag it comes with Lamborghini rockstar insurance price tag too. This obviously put people off buying large displacement vehicles and car manufacturers developed small displacement engines. Such as the RS200 mentioned in other videos
That's a very good point! The taxation on displacement bred some interesting variations like the Ferrari 208 and 208 turbo, whereas the usa only got the 308.
Ironically when ford launched the s550 Mustang in Europe. The 5.0 GT version outsells the 2.3 ecoboost version. I suppose it's because we have had the small displacement high strung stuff for over 50 years.
If you ever did a t-shirt it needs to say, "David Spade is a Miata"
As soon as that fell out of my mouth I knew it was going to haunt me 🤣
David Spade = Miata…now that’s all I’ll see every time I see him.🤣
I'm glad someone appreciates one of my trademark terrible analogies 😆
I think you’re right on about the visceral driving experience of these era cars, and why I keep going back to them. Jay Leno wrote a great piece in the latest Hagerty drivers club mag on this very topic. Side note...jealous of those cruisy midwest roads. In Salt Lake, and the canyons are fun but I do miss my home Illinois country long cruises. Keep the videos coming! Glad you're enjoying the GTS
Thank you for the kind words! I'll have to look up the drivers club article. Cheers!
I got my '95 MkIV Supra Turbo for $43k, sold in '02 for $27k, super-happy I got more than half what I paid even after 7 years. 😀 I love the C4 design, it's an utter classic. I'd totally swap engines on it though if I had one. That said, the squeaks and rattles were apparently bad even when new and are horrible now.
Man that MKIV would be worth a lot more today even with 200k miles!! That market is crazy! I love the design too, but I can tell you if you had a LT1/LT4 manual you might just enjoy it as is! And the squeaks and rattles aren't too bad for the era, but a Z51 car really tightens things up and reduces them.
@@mattquerio I didn't even drive it that much as I mostly biked to work (half hour) and got an M5 in late 1999 that I drove more. But yeah: I listed the car for sale in 2002 when I was moving from Zurich to London. There wasn't that much internet buying/selling at that time, but I got a phone call 40 minutes after listing it, the guy wanted to come over that evening and had the cash (well, bank transfer, but he had the money together). I know now to start off with a high listing price and work down! But at that point, it was just a used car, the new Mercedes SL seemed to be comperable but better, I liked my M5 more, and I had hail damage and had an accident involving the replacement of a lot of stuff on the bottom of the car as well. (First day of spring, sunny, roof off, 70F/20C, everyone in t-shirts, stopped at a stop sign, then moved forward not realizing there was still a sheet of ice in the shade of a tree across the intersection. Spun 180 and went over a curb at like 10mph/15km/h...) So it was a "story" car. And since my employer had gone bankrupt leaving me like 100k in arrears in pay, I needed the cash to be honest! But I was thinking at the time, gosh, that's odd, how did I sell it so fast?
Great video Matt. I have been looking at the Turner exhaust for a few weeks now. I'm sold! 🔥
Glad to help!!! Thanks for watching man!!
Hi,I've got a Bright Red 91 with L98 motor, 6 speed manual with 32k on the clock. One owner from new and I'm the second proud owner. When on holiday on the Isle of Wight, a red Ferrari parked next to us, but everyone was more interested in my Vette as they all said it was a much rarer car and a pleasure to see and hear.
I can imagine that is quite a sight to see over there! The 91 is a special year as you got the new body with the tried and true torque monster L98. Paired with the 6 speed it must be an absolute pleasure to drive at any speed! Cheers and thanks for watching!
@mattquerio My pleasure, thank you for your kind words. You take care and may speak again soon.Have a nice day 👍
I wish they would you horsepower when rating a tire, it is definitely relevant. Thanks for posting, these tires are taking the tracks and autoX by storm for cost and performance.
Yeah it really is hard to say what power a tire will hold with so many factors like section width etc, but as a 200tw I can say these really earn their keep. I have red that these tires are finding a lot of homes in auto-x and drifting, and I can see why after putting 600 or 700 miles on them!! Great tires, and thanks for watching as well!
Stripped cars are better for performance - weight is your enemy.
I agree my friend!!!
Hey Matt, I need your opinion. How much stock would you put in the LT4, over a similar spec/condition 1995 LT1? I'm in no rush to buy, and as far as mods, I would only ever do air intake/headers/tune at the most, if anything at all. The cars purpose will mainly be something to drive on the weekends, while my other projects are being worked on. So I would own it maybe 1-3 years. My driving style is more "grand touring" through the mountains, than it is hardcore sports car driving. However, I do wind my engines out and fully exercise whatever power the engine has. So the LT4's extra power would get used. It seems there is a good 3-5k priemum for an LT4, and I just can't decide if that's really worth it to me or not. The colors I like, are hard enough to find. So looking only for LT4 cars is limiting me quite a lot. Any advice and insight would help a lot.
Honestly, if you're going manual vs manual my advice is just buy the best one you can find. If you find a clean LT1 6 speed that you like, and you wanna put all the miles on it, that's still a great car. The LT4 does offer a good extra oomph and a cool factor, but hey if you find the right LT1 you can still shop and wait for the right LT4! They're all fun!
I drive my ‘91 to work every day for about 6 months of the year. I have a 1/2 ton for winter driving. Works for me and the ‘Vette gets much better mileage than the truck. Plus, it’s a cool car to cruise in. I love it.
These cars are soooo useable, and cheap to operate. I think they make a great commuter being as they get mid to upper 20s on the highway.
