Unlock value with an agile key: Demystifying Value Stream Mapping - Heidi Araya
Heidi Araya - Unlock value with an agile key: Demystifying Value Stream Mapping
Description
Many people call Value Stream Mapping "transformational" and "a game-changer." But what if people aren't ready for a large heavyweight activity with leadership buy in? Do you just give up? Understanding the entire system end-to-end is crucial for Agile-DevOps product development, and improving your ways of working. By mapping the system, including delays, handoffs, and information passed along, you can measure and optimize the entire path to value. In this session, Heidi shares what she has learned across years of both doing, and attempting to do, Value Stream Mapping -- both as an employee inside or...

Invisible group dynamics undermine relationships and performance, being able to see and name the dynamics empowers teams to change the outcome. Stand out as a masterful facilitator using a unique approach to designing and facilitating transformational workshops. Facilitation requires a combination of creativity, intuition, and structure. How you begin a workshop can greatly impact desired outcomes. A good facilitation plan-just like a good story-requires a strong beginning, middle, and end. That means that both writer and facilitator must hook their audiences right from the beginning or risk losing them before the beginning of Act 2. I love how a mindset is subjective, while a mental model can be presented, explained, tested, and tried without a high tax on the experimentor. 🙂
SAFe is unnecessary. It is a PRODUCT that is sold by SAFe, the company. I don't question if it will work if done right but it is "not necessary", so in reality the company that it truly works for is SAFe itself. SAFe does not contain a single value-add to Agile, except that it bloats it to a level where serious training becomes necessary - and that's where SAFe the company makes money.
Thanks for posting this. Nice job, Heidi! I love the lightweight approach - so much more effective.
Thank you! Glad I can provide value! :-D
Really love this video. It gives good real life examples of why a value stream mapping activity adds value for an organization, for teams and for individuals working there. Awesome work! Simple, easy to follow, and with great tips! Way to go Heidi!
Thank you! So glad it was helpful for you! Heidi
Wonderful and informative content. You are a wonderful communicator of these ideas!
Interesting to talk into one part of Dave Snowdens framework Cynefin
My experience is that an orginasation also goes from an agile trail and error mentality to a more stagnant zero mistakes mentality as it grows. It can easily push out people who thrives in an dynamic environment. Let’s face it we need people both traits. You probably want the accountant to be very detail and careful but you also want the marketing guy to be friendly and outgoing and the product owners to be innovative and open to new ideas.
My God, this is such a boring workshop! Seriously?
Plenty of sensible examples here going way beyond platitudes and debunking daft theories. Very practical.
Excellent talk! I especially loved her take on leadership in the Q&A. Containing the anxiety for the team to create is the most important thing a leader can do. Another key point for me was the effect of using nouns to describe dynamical things. Thank you
What happens when the whole field of changeable constraints (left of the counterfactual line) is populated with hexa-complex systems and, given time, the whole field of complex systems rearranges itself to become one energetically optimally rationed oscillatory machine balancing its efficiency and effectiveness - what happens when this field becomes one giant global coherent bee-hive? There is danger of geting: Malkovich sens-making, endless variations of individual stories on a Malkovich theme (or by Malkovich triplets of all ages and professions), Malkovich experimenting, Malkovich experiences, Malkovich visions of the future, Malkovich innovations, Malkovich rearrangements, Malkovich l'art pour l'art, Malkovich-Malkovich of well-being initiatives buzzing all around and endless internal Malkovich-Malkovich monologue flow inside people's heads. Constantly buzzing and dancing, moving the bar of work-time continuum, but ultimately unable to break through the counterfactual line. What happens if/when this global hexa-hive realizes that true (non systematized) incoherence is the way to go forward or the way to simply be, that non-bee is the only guarantor for true (non simulated) emergence?. What if all our emergent properties currently held by our consciousness (emergences of our past life experience on the planet, from protozoa onward) are actually the pinnacle of conscious achievement? What if diligent honey-gathering in The next million years will emerge only the Nothingness, gaping hole inside every atom of our body, loosing spin and hollowing us from the inside out?
Where do you draw the line between social engineering and mind control?
This has uncovered some key links for me; deep thanks to all involved. It's a truly confounding space & little wonder several well-meaning approaches run aground hereabouts. Please continue, everyone ! 😺
As usual, Snowden gives us practices we can take into our real worlds! In the bin go mindset, mental models, grand strategy, Utopian futures - and out comes the utility of Now.
Thank you for sharing this conversation, I really enjoyed the information Dave gave regarding leadership

My sincere thanks go out to you for putting together such a comprehensive and useful session !
Thanks Miljan! Neelan is a gem and should be a bigger name... It's cool you gave him this platform and airtime.
Excellent presentation.
I learned so much in this session. Was mind blown by Anus Facilitation techniques. I am introducing this to my scrum of scrum, to help other scrum masters 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Wow. Compelling story, great connection of a lot of big ideas.
A superb overview by Helen Beal of the status of VSM practice adoption, looking forward to sharing within the VSM consortium on the second edition of the report scheduled for release in early September
thank you for this excellent introduction, clear and very inspiring messages on flows, value streams and systems thinking
Green Disaster - A meeting for every question and every idea. Yikes
I love the fact that it's episode 42
If we work in a company A to develop product P shall we involve Sales Team in our release planning, and demo sessions, and make them part of the team attending our planning sessions for example and change the backlogs based on the feedback they get from market?
Loved this interview. It oftentimes produced a smile within. Appreciating both the content and something that felt like fluency or meta-pattern. Beauty arrived.
Thank You Miljan ! I am a friend of JJ and am delighted to learn more about him personally and the Agile approach to business and life. I appreciate your thoughtful questions and personality. Best of luck to you and your organization. Joseph Nolan
Thank you!

Miljan, you are good! I like your style in this vid. You are interested, listen, emphasize, elaborate on the issues you talk about. And you know where you are talking about. That makes this conversation very pleasurable. Keep up the good thing. I will probably see al lot more of your interviews. About 35 to go I guess. :-)
Tobias is brilliant
Well done - I enjoyed your views.
Ohh, thank you both. You have no idea how useful this conversation is! You deliver on owning the experience. I appreciate how you are both well-informed and how the conversation held a beautiful ambience of re-orienting our sense of freedom (none) and interdependencies, towards each and every player´s responsibility for the whole. Be your best or perish!
Great insight on the ongoing shift from product to experience as a way to be more holistic and inclusive while configuring the overall customer journey (last 3 min. of the conversation). Thanks both.
Great conversation. Thanks to have shared very openly about yourself and your background @James this time. Values are principles that people value. Also took away kuhn's cycle for further investigation. @Milan: did not catch the name of guy who elaborates on invitation vs imposition transformation drivers. Can you spell his name below please? Thank you again both.
Hi. Could someone write down the name of the website David was suggesting at the very end of the conversation? Glad you did this for the world and thanks!
Hi Javo, I believe it's this website: kmm.plus/en/
A publication mentioned in first few minutes: "Managing complexity (and chaos) in times of crisis. A field guide for decision makers inspired by the Cynefin framework" ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/publication/managing-complexity-and-chaos-times-crisis-field-guide-decision-makers-inspired-cynefin-framework
' You can't know the future but you can move the adjacent possible '
It was an honour and a pleasure to be Miljan’s guest and talk about many things Agile and Scrum.
