"Living for The City: The Black Middle Class in Milwaukee" Community Forum at the MCHS
Community Forum Recording:
Dr. Ermitte Saint Jacques and Historian Kitonga Tumaini Alexander lead a community forum on the Black middle class in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Typically, the narrative surrounding Black Milwaukee is one of poverty, struggle, crime, but there are many Black residents who have achieved success and stability. This is an opportunity for the community to discuss the Black Middle Class in Milwaukee and to share their research from the project. This forum is in tandem with the traveling exhibit "Living for the City," which is on display at the MCHS from July - October 2024.

    Actually the USM Lady Elgin was an old fashioned common dive "gin mill", and some of the passengers are boarding that cheap saloon, for the booze. Note many of the Union Guards are from Catholic Saint John Cathedral, which was mainly anti-booze semi-Baptist. The saloon thought the ship was supposed to stay at its regular dock space due to a storm on Lake Michigan, but the accountant owner of the Lady Elgin, Gordon Hubbard, ordered the ship to depart for Milwaukee, who wants to move a lot of cargo before the Soo locks freeze for the winter, heading for/from Duluth-Superior. The USM Lady Elgin was mainly a freighter, with poor passenger accommodations: only a few staterooms, and minimum lifeboats. Chicago US Harbormaster Phillip Conley staff allowed Captain Wilson and helmsman Davis to depart over crowded, and possibly over loaded, with cast iron stoves/furnaces, and a big cattle herd, during a windy storm. After departure, Captain Darius Mallott, allowed his un-lit Schooner Augusta of Oswego, to ram the Lady Elgin, instead of heaving to and anchoring, against the storm.

      Senator Stephen Douglas was running the territories of the United States in the 1850s, and recruiting militiamen for tax collection against mainly rebel Southern plantations, and for a slightly earlier war against some Mormons and Native Americans in the then huge Utah Territory, and some Cuban plans. Taxes included cotton bales shipped to mainly Carolina and New England mills, when fake monetary Dixies were refused. Both Southerners and Mormons practiced slavery. Wisconsin Republican Governor Randall was allied to failing Southern banking interests, compared to other Northern states allied to New York and New England banks. Republican squatters were fighting with the old Milwaukee militias (Yagers) at Ripon, Wisconsin, as the Republican (Free Soil) Party was founded. Milwaukee US Harbormaster Martin Doorly, also Ensign Orderly and Medic QO, and my ancestor was supporting Douglas in the 1860 election campaign, as he received huge amounts of harbor funding, as it was turning into one of the biggest workshops in the world (copper, brass, iron, steel, grain, leather, beer).

    Perhaps Wright’s only true interest was aspect-situating a building as an object in a landscape. To that end he ignored conventional notions of human comfort, like light, space, and accommodation, and instead played with “features” that actually restrict occupants’ freedom. What a drag.

    • @gregpendrey6711
      @gregpendrey6711 3 месяца назад

      It is a conflict if the home is not accommodating and we are forced to make awkward accomodations for our comfort. Everyday homes are easier to modify for our needs. I guess it's a drag when the design is finite and rigid as well as forced on the occupant. FLW did however open eyes more than anyone since?

      @@gregpendrey6711 You understand and clarify my reaction to a specimen of this remarkable architect’s work. I think conflict and discomfort, inherent in his designs, remove them from serious consideration as domiciles. Shelter, safety and comfort are the traditional priorities, more easily achieved through vernacular styles, but Wright’s “modern” generation preferred visionary projects and adventures in the arts.

    Truly Incredible Documentary. Thank you so much for sharing. I had seen a handful of pictures and reproductions of drawings for the Bogk House over the years but had no idea. So amazing How great Art can inculcate great taste in people who are open to receive the Inspiration. Mrs. Elsner likely would have found her calling similar whether her and her husband had purchased the house or not. So many happy coincidences that they did. And the fact that the collaboration that existed between Frank Lloyd Wright and the Bogks has continued through the stewardship of the property by the Elsners (even in spite of the unfortunate fact of Wright not having taken the time to meet the Elsners and posthumously). As well as to generally being the impetus for a veritable diaspora of good works. Truly an incredible woman. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and all of us passionate about Frank Lloyd Wright and historic preservation (Our collective cultural heritage) in general are so much the better for her and her husband. thank you again.

    I was born in Milwaukee, but only lived there until I was 2 years old. I never knew Milwaukee had such glorious homes and buildings. It is an abomination that these beautiful homes were not kept up, valued and were allowed to go into disrepair due to neglect or greed. The buildings that were put up after these glorious homes were tragically destroyed were and still are ugly, cold and an abomination to the city's more beautiful past. All of those 'modern' reset replacement apartments and buildings look like they belong in the old East Germany occupied and ruled by the communists. I know, because I was there in the 1970's visiting relatives. The new buildings may be called progress by some, but it sure seem to me that modern styles are hidious and only lead to a decay of society. Very sad to see such beauty being torn down to be replaced with ugly.

I found an article that claims one of my ancestors learned the printing business while apprenticing under Benjamin Franklin at the age of 14. The source is a Milwaukee Sentinal article from 1954, I believe. Though there are suspected connections, I can't seem to confirm that the Neilsons are also connected to Franklin.

    12% "German" victims with "Bohemian" in a 10% mixed group of other nationalities. However, the wreck occurred in 1860 but a unified Germany wasn't created until after 1865, but as Messrs. Baehr and Harry so rightly highlighted, newspaper reports of the time were less about factual reporting when sensationalism would do. The Cathedral of St John the Evangelist in Milwaukee continues to celebrate an offertory mass on September 9th for the victims of the Lady Elgin, many of whom were parishioners.
