Part 1
If you "jump without a parachute," you splatter on the ground.
Miles was a highly antennae that reflected the social climate with all the protests, police brutality and fractured society. How could he start playing “My Funny Valentine” in light of the social context. Miles was on fire!
The mere sight of Stanley Crouch makes me sick. I dislike critics and he is the worst!
Reminds me of the outrage when Bob Dylan went electric. Actually there are many parallels between Davis and Dylan
This Stanley Crouch dude just didn't get it, sad!
he was a terrible a ,,hole
Some of the best Rhodes piano playing ever.
THUMBS DOWN after 'On the Corner' to the man who re-defined a genre many times over.
I get it. I love Miles for his genius, courage, fierce independence- and how watching Hendrix snd Prince gave him ideas. Just for me- not all Were enjoyable. Not sure they were for miles either.
I was playing jazz when BB and the next electric Miles albums came out- Stanley Crouch was wrong (notice I didn't say dead wrong) about selling out for money. Those albums didn't get huge commercial returns, thousands of new fans weren't jumping onboard.....think about the other music that was coming out 1970-75- I probably was the only one in my scene listening to the New Miles- nobody got it- jazzers thought it was noise- rockers weren't going to dig a bass clarinet-country and blues had solid scenes- Miles was trailblazing- we just didn't know it yet.
3:05 I think Miles said "It might have a little more resonance there". It would make more sense too.
This is so well done, glad it was done when it was done as these guys aren't getting any younger. RIP Chic Corea👈
Those who can, do. Those who can't become critics like Stanley Crouch.
I hadn't thought about it before: what Joni Mitchell said about the similarity between the traditional folkies' resistance to electrifying Folk music and the Jazz traditionalists' resistance to electric instruments and Rock rhythms, but it's true. There is a similarity. Many people were upset, not just at Dylan's going electric, but at Joni's. Very insightful. At one time, believe it or not, Jazz and Folk were considered for college students and Rock was for teenagers; high-schoolers. It was the Beatles and groups like them, that at first appealed to the "kids" and then kept that audience by growing along with them as the "kids" moved into college and beyond, embracing the very complexity and diversity that their audience was now experiencing. I do agree that to a certain extent Miles wanted to make more money, because, as he said himself, he was shocked to learn that these Rock musicians pulling in so much cash couldn't even read music. But I think he was genuinely turned on by these new sounds. He wasn't just faking it.
agree, people who say Miles went electric to make money are crazy. Listen to Agharta/Pangea and tell me, with a straight face, he was trying to get radio play or popular appeal! No way, he was pushing the art as much as he could
Stanley Crouch is so full of baloney. Look at the highlighted quote in the article by Crouch is a prime example. Who today thinks that Nietzsche got it right? Time is the ultimate judge of these matters. Crouch's approach to music is the same old-fogey attitude that the WWII generation had towards Rock 'n' Roll: "Why are the young people listening to this garbage when Bing Crosby is still putting out stuff?"
RIP Stanley Crouch
dude was clearly a suppressor of authentic inventiveness, he sucks
The Greatest
Stanley Crouch definitely didn’t get it lol
Stanley was a pot- grubbing SKEEZER even l tho l agree with a lot of his points. Miles' electric era was definitely an acquired taste, and to tell the truth, after 'On the Corner' l shut down on him.
This whole doc was great, I've watched it a number of times over, never gets old 👍👍

Bitches Brew is some of the most amazing music ever made. Every time I listen to that album I still hear something different.

Stanley Crouch and his stupid criticisms and judgements make him look like and ignorant ass.
