    It also helps stretching the notes downwards without letting it to snap to the note below. Starting at the middle G in F horn, and then half step lower, using all keys. Then repeat, also in F and for all combinations, starting in E then C, then low G and low C. It forces you to relax the embouchure otherwise you snap to the next note.

    Claude Gordon taught anchor tonguing, i.e. keeping the tip of the tongue anchored behind the bottom teeth. TCE describes anchoring the tongue permanently on the bottom lip to control the resistance of the embouchure directly at rhe aperture. If you make educational videos, please make sure you use correct terminology. Your demonstration at the end has very little to do with your "tongue level" explanation before. All it proves is that the vibration of the upper lip is the most crucial in brass playing and that the lower lip functions mainly as a control of the embouchure rather than as vibrating surface.

      interesting, thank you for sharing. i wonder if you have any links or resources that can substantiate this, or describe where you learned the above from? since I teach and make videos I absolutely do want to get the terms & acknowledgements correct, and it's possible I may have misunderstood or mis-remembered when I studied w/ Jeff Purtle (Claude Gordon's torch-bearer).

    It was Jerry Callet who coined the phrase TCE, not Gordon. Bahb Civiletti contributed. And the tongue goes through the teeth, touching the bottom lip at all times, always forward in the mouth. Before his passing, he changed his pedagogy, moving away from TCE.. Other than that, you have the basics. Jerry used to say, CG was as close to getting it right as anybody, but missed by a fraction of an inch.

      Interesting, thank you for sharing. Do you have any further details or links that I can study to get these details? I briefly studied Callet's materials but when I studied with Jeff Purtle (who wrote the book on CG) it was my understanding that TCE came from Claude Gordon.

      @marsgelfo 3 дня назад

      thanks for offering this. can you provide a resource that supports what you're saying? I got the term TCE from Jeff Purtle who studied with claude gordon. It's possible I may have misunderstood or misremembered - I was gobbling up texts and methods all over the brass world. Since I do teach a lot, it is important for me to have the right terminology and credit where it's due. Would greatly appreciate if you have any links or resources that can help me to get clear exactly who is using what terms and how they differ.

    TCE - tongue-controlled embouchure I believe we intuitively learn how to use our tongue to shape our mouth cavity to achieve the cleanest sound at different dynamics and registers. We also use it to create different timbres like cuivre or a broad open sounding tone. I don't see how this is the embouchure though as that pertains to the facial and lip formation. I do wonder how it is we can roll the edges of our tongue without affecting the sound very much.

    • @marsgelfo
      @marsgelfo 28 дней назад

      I agree Eric, most (or many) people intuitively learn to use their tongues to shape the oral cavity and produce desired timbre & pitches. How it pertains to embouchure is that your lips (the reed) will vibrate differently depending on the quality, speed, and volume of air stream. "Tongue controlled embouchure" (claude gordon's term), describes the relationship between tongue and embouchure, that your actual vibrating mechanism is more controlled by the tongue. For me, I do not believe this is the only factor to be coordinated - so I don't claim that the embouchure is 100% controlled by the tongue. But I do believe Claude Gordon was onto something, and I honor his teaching by using his term.

  • @raphaelhudson
    @raphaelhudson Месяц назад

    Mars do you think you get that compression at the front of the tongue nesr the mp or mote at the arch near the molars of all along. I find that i tend to get my compression more at the molars so what i do with the front of the tongue has very little impact, even on trumpet above above a high C, unless i force my tongue to sit in front of the lower teeth like super chops style. But when i do the latter my feeling is that it shuts down the lower lip which seems wrong 🤷

    • @marsgelfo
      @marsgelfo 28 дней назад

      i'm not sure i understand your question. generally to avoid bernoulli-effect style low pressure zone in front of mouth, i feel like I'm compressing at the front of the mouth, not at the molars (those may be involved too). Think of putting your finger at the end of a garden hose versus the middle.
