C8 Corvette Track Day at NJMP Thunderbolt - June 3 2022
NASA North East ran this event - great job folks! This is group 3 and 4 together with instructors (with X's on their cars).
I spent two days at Thunderbolt. It was my first time here. Day 1 had better track conditions, with day 2 getting hotter and rubber marbles building up from the race group's tires. Turns 9 & 10 became very tricky. Even on day 1 people were saying the track was not as grippy as usual.
Fastest lap I did was in this session (1:34.5 on lap 3) even though my familiarity and lines improved over the two days. I'm still using the original Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires but it's likely their last track outing.

They said someone had dropped oil on the track.... Turns out they dropped if for about a mile! The takeaway is that if some thing is wrong pull off in a safe place to avoid so much expensive clean up.

Watkins Glen is awesome! Well worth the drive from NC up to NY. HPDE3 group was combined with HPDE2 which made for some traffic and slower point bye's but I had a great time. Best lap time was the second one at 2:15.04, but I could definitely do a 2:14 without having to pass other cars. Where's the fun in that though?

Last session for the weekend. Combined with those in HPDE4 (Instructors, and race licensed). Always fun to see some more experienced drivers and their cars - I'm jealous of their tires most of the time. I started near the front of the line and watched where each driver had some different lines (after they passed me).

    Nice! I'm taking my C5 there in August for my first track night! This is honestly one of the best videos I've watched of the track so far. Idk if it's bad camera angles or what, but most of the other videos I've watched have a warped speed/depth perspective, making the track look too narrow for the speeds people are hitting. Thanks for sharing, this is great!

    Nice driving Matt. Can I offer you one small tidbit of info? You're scrubbing a ton of speed on the entry to turn 3 (The fast right hander). Fast guys go in there at 100+mph. I've taken it at 103mph at the apex. If you can set up your car to keep it above 95 and closer to 100mph there, you'll knock off another 2 seconds per lap. Otherwise, your driving is excellent as well as your ability to read the traffic. Oh, one more thing.... I noticed your traction light came on a couple of times at the exit of 12 onto the front straight. Please be cautious there, especially since you mentioned that traction was weird that day. A snap oversteer event will put you into the wall.

      Thanks. Preparation included: Getting the transmission oil topped up per Chevy instructions, track alignment per Chevy instructions, Carbotech brake pads (XP12 for on track, which I swap back to 1521's for low dust street use - I don't get surface layer issues swapping back and forth. Had this issue before when swapping brands). The car goes great on the standard Michelin PS4's. I'm amazed at the performance and durability on track. I'll be replacing with Pilot Sport Cup 2's though for the coming season.

    Hi Matt : I was at Watkins Glen June 30 , what an awesome track . My best lap time was 2:19.06 - Im in a stock non z51 c8 - Hawk brakes DCT 60's and cup 2 tires I put on at the track . ( I put a hitch on the C8 & tow a small tire trailer with tools ) My question is again on track alignment : Did It make a BIG difference than the stock alignment ? I'm wearing out the outside edges in 5 track days on the front tires . What was the cost of the alignment ? Thank you for your help - You are one of the few who use your C8 as I do .

    • @mattevans2003
      @mattevans2003 2 года назад

      I'm sold on doing the track alignment but you may not value it for various reasons. The reason I go for the track alignment is partly because of the learning experience i had with my 2016 Camaro SS. I drove this with and without track alignment and kept pushing as I gained experience. I came out of that with a better appreciation of what the tire footprint is doing and how the vehicle dynamics change. I realize the dynamics of the Corvette are somewhat different but the same concepts apply. So from the beginning I was confident that the track alignment would give me more performance and that I would detect and decide if it was too much camber or not. After 10 track days I feel it is right for me. In contrast to this, a person with less or no track time might not actually find any value at all. I would save the cost of the alignment, get some experience and change it after doing enough to get into intermediate group. The main reason is that there is so much to learn before camber becomes a concern. I didn't find the Corvette suffering from understeer on the road like several journalists talked about, so I'm sure it will do just fine on the track without the track alignment, up to a point. The chevrolet dealer near me quoted a lot to get a track alignment so I took it to a shop that does track set ups and they found that it is a difficult and time consuming job to do the alignment. I'll need to look it up but from memory it was about $400 and they should have probably charged more.

      @@mattevans2003 : It's time to get the alignment for me . I run intermediate in 3 different groups SCDA , NASA, ERMA . I know this will help shave a few seconds out of a lap . The problem I am having is finding a shop that can do it ? seems like they will need a couple of tools - a digital angle adapter & alignment adapter mounting pins . I do understand it's easily a 400.00 job if not more . Did you get your done in NC ?

      Your excessive front tire wear is likely from not enough negative camber. I too have a 2020 C8 Z51 with Cup 2s and Hawk DCT60s and my best at WGI is 2:10.3 . You'll need negative 3.5 camber in the front (this exceeds the factory spec because the Cup 2 is stickier) in the front and negative 2 in the rear. Your front toe should be 0.10 degree positive (toe-in, NOT TOE-OUT). The rear caster needs to be adjusted to 0 degrees. All the best! Joe

    Is it true that for PTM, at or right after apex you can full throttle and car will take care of rest? like if corner is too sharp it will reduce hp/wheel spin etc. So after apex you don't need to manipulate the throttle, just full throttle and cpu will take care of rest. ( will car go side way a little bit ? but not dangerous as PTM will save it?)

    • @mattevans2003
      @mattevans2003 2 года назад

      @@okaythen001 Try it in a controlled environment - A parking lot would do, preferably when it's wet. On a slippery skid pad like environment you can invoke the interventions and learn more. Try different modes to compare what the car does. The challenge with experimenting on the street is that normally the car has a lot of grip and inducing the PTM actions is only going to happen at some very stupid speeds. I think many people will get overloaded with other problems even before you can sense and learn from what the traction management is doing. i.e. narrow lanes, uneven road surface, potential for vehicles/people/animals to be in your path unexpectedly. PTM is not going to save you from all the challenges you may run into but it will hopefully help. The machine gun noise you refer to sounds like rev limiter rather than PTM. When the power is reduced for PTM purposes it doesn't do that and that sound certainly wouldn't come from PTM brake applications.

    What do you think about doing whats called a hybrid alignment ? 1/2 of the track setting .

    • @mattevans2003
      @mattevans2003 2 года назад

      Originally I thought that might be a good idea (prior to setting it up with the Chevy track camber). After doing a few track days at different tracks (with the recommended camber), I found it performed well and I believe the concern about inside edge tire wear is not that big a deal for the cycle of road and track driving that I'm doing. I've done about 8000 miles with 4 weekends of track days and the outside edge of the front tires is the first part to wear down. Of course if you aren't doing track days for a long time it's possibly worth going back to standard camber. I'm more likely to continue doing a 6-10 track days or or more per season and a moderate amount of street driving so I doubt I'll change it back. Street driving is using the inside edges at a slow rate of wear and just helps equalize out the tread wear. People exaggerate how bad it could be for wearing inside edges, but that means they probably aren't aggressively using the tires on a track - track use is far more significant tread wear. If there was less camber it may work well enough but based on my experience it looks like it could have a higher rate of tread wear at the outside edges with less camber... so potentially less performance and the tires would wear out quicker.

      It has the Chevy recommended track alignment. I have found it works great. Very balanced or perhaps a little oversteer depending on my inputs. e.g. trail braking into corners a little late and you can induce some oversteer (but what car doesn't do that...) and very rarely like in this video at the 8min mark I've had the rear slide a bit under hard acceleration out of a slippery corner.

There is a big difference in speedometer verses GPS measured speed due to the diameter of the tire being so much less once the bike is leaned over.
