    Great to see you're posting again, it's always a great one when you do! What an astonishing recording! Your Gamelan + Keroncong selections are some of the best on the entire platform! If I may ask where do you source these discs? I had no idea this Odeon label variant went so far back, I've got several Indian discs with the same label dating from between 1920 and 1944, which is already a long enough window, never mind as far back as 1909!

    • @seventy8historicmusic

      This Odeon, and the Hindenburg I posted earlier, all came a friend in Yogyakarta, and there's lots more from just that lot! The rest of my collection has come from other collectors, and from leads I've received from family living in Indonesia. This is a later re-issue, probably made in the 1920s. The next video I'm working on is a tandak on the same label, but dates to 1907!

    Thank you. Hearing this has cleared up a long-standing discographical error. This side was mixed up with a Clarion recording (Matrix 788-2)which was attributed to Vincent Lopez in error. Now this Paramount recording (956 matrix) can be heard it demonstrates that the Clarion recording was by a totally different sounding orchestra.

    On the acoustic German Homocords you'll find a code in the run off area. It consists of a letter, a number, and again a letter. If you tell me, I will be able to fairly identify the recording date. Most probably, both sides were recorded the same day.

    • @seventy8historicmusic
      @seventy8historicmusic 7 месяцев назад

      Interesting, I did not know that! I pulled it out to give it a check, I don't see anything in the runout except for the matrix, but I see a few codes written beneath the label under a bright lamp, but they're very faint. Looks like "13-B-17", but I am not entirely confident of that. I am sure of 13 at least, that is clear on both sides. What I believe to be "17" could also be "L17", it appears to have a hooked bottom like an L on one side, but that wouldn't line up with what you have told me about Homokord's date codes. Any information from this would be greatly appreciated!

    • @Stompy23
      @Stompy23 7 месяцев назад

      @@seventy8historicmusic Thank you. The first digit indicates the month, the number is the day, and the suffix letter the year (there is always just one letter, never two or more). E8C would indicate May 8, 1923. B is 1924. The year code is a bit complicated, as it starts with V in 1905 and goes backwards in the alphabet to A in 1925, just to use the leftover W for 1926, the year when they decided to abandon this weird system. However, your combination seems quite strange. Normally, there is always one number between two letters. Not the other way round.

    • @seventy8historicmusic
      @seventy8historicmusic 7 месяцев назад

      Interesting! It's possible that I misread the code, since it is so faint. I will double check that later tonight! Thank you for the info!
