Great effort Steve. Very unlucky with the Beast, but I guess this is all part of the process with building a car from scratch. Good lessons learned i expect. Onwards and upwards through the winter. Good luck.
Hi Steve. I was there and watched part of your motor rewind. Never, ever seen that. 👏👏👏 Your dedication and hard work was amazing. That Elvington surface was very, very hard for the smaller scales. Very surprised you even got a run out of the cone car, my Buri was such a scary handful I gave up after 2 attempted runs... Really looking forward to 2025 and Llanbedr. I think you will get a 150mph cap from the cone and maybe the next cap from a simplified Beast. 👏👏👏

I am wondering if the flight controller will be able to handle the current of a serious speed run without a bunch of extra capacitors. I guess we will see what blows first!
Hey, the FC didnt seem to have any problem on my previous speed car. In any case its isolated from the 12s by the PDU unit I'm using (Matek). Have a look at my next video and see!

Nice but at very high speeds those brake will hold and may fail, aren’t you able to use electronic brake like normal rc cars use, they do work very well.
hey and thanks for watching. Yes the brakes are a concern, especially since the brakes are 3d printed so will only survive up to a certain low temperature before deforming. The braking strategy for my cars is to use aerodynamic drag initially, then use electrical braking from the motors/ESCs and finally the mechanical brakes to bring it to a standstill. I dont think I can reply only on the ESC braking because they are drone esc's not designed to deliver strong braking forces.
@@steveeng1826 I don’t know about ESC braking. There are many out there doing runs. That have Hit 225 mph and using ESC braking.
I hope you have time to adjust the PIDs/etc, taking it slow in steps of say 25 to 50mph, good luck. Personally I would of put the esc close to each motor, so motor leads are short, (maybe even keeping them cooler) I think it would of cleaned up the power wiring.
Hey, thanks for watching and commenting. On my first car I kept the same PID settings as the 6" quadcopter that the FC came from actually and it seemed to work well! I think the FC has an easier time of it as the car has wheels on the ground to give more instant correction, not like something flying. I put the ESC's under the plate to protect them in the event of a tyre blowout, but it did make them impossible to access which was not ideal! That will be improved in future 👍
@@steveeng1826 What FC firmware version are you using? What flight mode (acro, or)? Did you lay the FC flat or vertical and change gyro orientation or? TIA I mostly fly LOS drones and have a triple rate switch for roll/pitch, 1200/1750/1950, maybe you could use something like this for your car, to be able to turn around, but mellow it out for the speed run. ruclips.net/video/uHoFfpLSb2g/видео.html&t
Nice to see somebody taking aero seriously, I'm kinda surprised this hardcore analysis is not more common among the Rossa attendees. Seems like the prevailing strategy is more power (which I have to admit is not entirely unsuccessful!). I would be inclined to put the canards at or slightly behind the front wheels, perhaps them being so far forward is what contributed to reduction of rear downforce in that one analysis - that's assuming the CFD sim is aware that the wheels are a point which can be pivoted around. I think the holy grail would be front and rear canards, actively responding to load cell readings of the downforce. Having more downforce than necessary for traction is only creating drag. I would also want to have a throttle controller that responds to current speed (eg. from GPS), so that just enough power can be added to avoid ripping up the tires, without depending on a very nervous human finger to get it right. Not sure how much of this would be allowed by the rules though.... Another thing I find amazing is that nobody uses parachutes, mainly they would be helpful to prevent your expensive car from turning into a pile of bits when it becomes airborne, but they would also be useful just for braking in a run that ended normally, and save the tires a bit. There was a guy there one time (I saw in one of Kev's videos) who had a car with a belt-driven solid rear axle, I think that's the way to go. Not sure why people want 4WD or complex suspensions like double-wishbone etc. or even Ackerman-style steering, since you're not turning corners much or dealing with uneven ground. Okay, now that I sound like a presumptuous know-it-all, I better go and find someone else to annoy :)
Hi, thanks for taking the time to write a comment, its much appreciated. I agree about the holy grail being active aero based on load cell reading of wheel load, I have that in mind for the future but I need to get the car working as it is first! Regarding the canard location you get an output of total downforce and moment around a reference point, from that you can work out the downforce distribution. I needed to put the canards as far forwards as possible to give it additional "front downwards" moment! Throttle control wise the holy grail of that would be some kind of traction control, another thing I have in mind for a future addition! Parachutes would also reduce the load through the cars speed controller, assuming that is used for braking. My strategy is to use a combination of aerodynamic braking, then the speed controllers, then the mechanical brakes to bring it to a standstill. If I run into issues with that then maybe a parachute would be the way to go. The belt drive solid rear axle car is Afxentis's, it certainly works well for him, his is close to hitting 200mph with it. It certainly goes with the sensible philosophy of "start with the simple"! Thanks again and why not try and make a car yourself, sounds like you have plenty of good ideas 👍

Yes, I am making a 1/10 scale formula student car(3d printed) with aproximatly the same setup. Only using 2s and servo steering also. It only steers a bit to quick now sometimes and then spins mid corner so was curious what you had for settings

Yes it was tight! And yes it's gonna be a long wait! Especially since I don't think I'll be running the beast car anywhere other than Rossa events due to the space needed. Nice idea on Spain! Some setup like motorbike track days could work where they take your bike down for you while you fly down.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for watching! I can't remember where the carbon spring idea came from, but a single spring is what I had on my first car with the Beast car having a double spring arrangement a bit like a double wishbone car suspension. Keep watching and you will see what happened at Rossa RD3 soon!
An exciting build to watch. A lot of parts and stages of the build bringing the BEAST to life ! Especially interesting to see how the body shape modelled in the CFD analysis comes to life on the 3D printer before being joined together to form the completed body !

Great video Steve. A question occurred to me while watching. With an open wheel car (my typhon or a limitless, for example) how much are the front splitters and rear spoilers helping? The airflow must be all over the place! Could the splitter/spoilers actually make it worse?
Just remember you need lots of down force to have enough traction. Front wings after are necessary.
Great work. Thanks for sharing. Some of these shapes look a lot like the bodies made that Raz used. With that said you needs lots of down force to put the power down and fight blow overs.
@@rcraceandbash5472 hey and thanks for the message! I think the splitters and spoilers must be helping, because you're achieving some high speeds with your cars without them becoming airborne! But the open wheels cars will certainly have a high drag coefficient, which means you then need more traction and power to drive it through the air especially as the speed gets higher (as per the science of speed video). It's potentially a bit of a vicious cycle type situation! It would be interesting to do some CFD testing on an open wheeler to see if the body setup could be improved.

@@steveeng1826 it was only a few years ago 150 was considered the max for an open wheel, yet here we are with some guys into the 170s. I think that says more about the power systems than the aero right now 🤣🤣. It would certainly be interesting to see how the open wheel performed on the modelling software

Hey, thanks for watching my ramblings and for the comment 🙂 There are a lot of unknowns with the speed running but the aerodynamic drag is a known thing that can be calculated so we might as well try and use it to our advantage. I think the success of "dart" style cars are at least partly down to that 👌 Personally I don't plan on rewinding any motors (again) either!! 😂
I once heard it said that drag wise, driving a car above 180mph is like driving a car through a fruit cake.... In my experience once you get to 80 to 100mph then aero really starts playing a part, which agrees with your plot well. Think many peoples experiences with duals and quads also agrees well with your plots. May well help those trying to push for 200mph on a single too. Mass, and downforce and the effects they have are factors that have to be taken into account. Many thanks for the video and discussion, it will defimately help in my overwinter rebuilds. 👏👏👏 I am NOT going to rewind any motors though..... 😂

Funnily enough yesterday I was soldering connectors onto my lipos with 10 gauge wire using my Amazon soldering iron as per your recommendation 😀 it took max power but it did it nicely 👌
I can appreciate you must have a lot of work ahead of you. I only have two relatively simple cars and i worry if i will be ready! Glad the soldering iron worked out well for you. I had some goodies arrive from Mike at Onyx recently - he really is a great guy, so i spent the evening yesterday soldering 8mm bullets. Im hoping to get my 150 cap at round 3 and then go for the 175 next year. No doubt you will be hitting similar (or bigger!) numbers 🙂

The biggest problem people are having are the tires !!!!!!!! They blow apart at 200 mph

@@peterfelecan3639 hi and thanks for watching, yes I've been excited to show the iterative cycle, in future videos I plan to show how it went because it's moved on a long way from what I showed here. Thanks for the comment on the music, I think some of what I've used worked but not others, I'll be more picky with where and what I use in future! Using Simscale for CFD by the way which is free for your first 10 runs (with numerical results).
The pointy tip of your design is very sensitive to the direction of the oncoming air. Consider rounding it more. Forcing more air under the car might also increase the Bernoulli effect below the car, but better validate CFD.
Round it more when looking from the side right? I have been meaning to check the pitch sensitivity of my more recent designs but haven't got round to it yet. Maybe this week! Thanks for watching 👍
@@steveeng1826 Yes, it should be sensitive to bumps in the road. Rounding the nose more when looking from the side should fix that. You have got a nose like 🏎️ and you probably one want one like 🚗.

@@secretbassrigs this did cross my mind but I decided not to because I didn't want the extra weight and complexity. Plus if I can get the aerodynamics to work it would give downforce for free! Try it and let me know how it goes 😀
@@steveeng1826 there's an obscure AI maze race called MICROMOUSE that basically uses electric cars as Mice. it seems to improve traction and torque as much as it prevents "blowouts". good luck!

Youll need a solution for your wheels. You cant 3d print something that can spin at 200 mph without flying apart. Even car tires with reinforced vulcanized rubber and steel rims need to be specially designed for 200 mph. Check your Aero stability too. Are those tail fins big enough to keep you straight and will you flip up like a Mercedes at Le Mans when a little wind gets under the car? if you find your motors shattering magnets and bending their shaft JustCuzRobotics makes some hyper durable brushless motors for a premium but they're custom made to be high speed hub motors.
@@Drawliphant thanks for watching, yes I'll be using off the shelf wheels for this car rather than 3d prints that should be capable of 200mph. I haven't got a way of simulating lateral stability so I'm going to have 2 sizes of fins and the option to have up to 3 of them! They are definitely necessary, I ran my old car without them once and it went all over the place then crashed.. I think I have a solution for getting balanced downforce front and rear but will have to see how it performs in real life! Cheers for the tip on the hub motors 👍 Steve

Hey, thanks for watching it! Actually it does have an innovative leaf spring type suspension system of my own design, I'm looking forward to showing that in a future video. The bearings are a concern, they were on my first car too although they proved slightly more durable than the spindly 3mm motor shafts! The loading direction is better on the car than in a drone (radial rather than axial) and they have a 175kg radial load capacity, so I'm hopeful they will be fine! We shall see!

Yes good idea, I'll do this in a future video. Its fairly simple, just changing the mapping from memory.
Did you do any major changes to the PID loop, or any of the other quad-centric features in betaflight? (Did you use betaflight?)

Really great to see new concepts tried in speed running. Lots of great control in those drone flight controllers. Maybe some more CFD testing with the body is needed. The shape might create some lift.
