    The real sound of the cannon does sound a lot better then what was used in the movie.

    With Tom Cruise being an actual pilot, I fail to see why he (being the director of his movie) didn't incorporate the chainsaw sound of rotary cannons. Seriously, they're TERRIFYING and he has no real excuse.

    I was unimmersed by those cannon sounds. They are cannons, not machine guns. It sounds like double deckers from WW1 firing. However whole movie is what I refer to as popcorn movies. Fun if you want action but I don't take them seriously from the beginning. It's like the John Wick movies. They are so unnecessarily over the top that they aren't fun as a movie. edit for spelling

    The Germans in WWII loved hearing the tearing canvas sound of an MG42.

  • @RHaenJarr

    Much better. The vanilla sounds are so out of place. Maybe they'd fit a WWI canvas plane. Don't think they'd even fit a WWII one let alone a modern fighter jet

    Personally, I always enjoyed the realistic bzzzzzzt sound over Hollywood's chunka-chunka-chunka sounds. Theirs makes it sound like I can dodge between bullets. So realistic chaingun sounds are more intimidating, as I can hear just how many rounds are actually being fired. It's a literal beam of metal. ;P

    Maybe because I play video games like BF, jets with the slower cannon sounds, sound faintly ridiculous, like they have WW1 fighter plane machine guns for some reason. With punchy bass, the bbrrrrt is terrifying.

    I can't help it... I hear the real gun sound and I have to make noise when I hear it. I hear that brrrrrrrt and I end up laughing at how awesome it sounds or swearing... or if I was in front of it, probably glad I wear brown trousers. 😅

    maybe they did it that way because of the visual relation to the ammo counter. the 30ish rounds shot at a time didn't seem to match the clip of the expert saying 100 rounds per second

    Your middle-ground rendition was excellent, loved it. I would be quite happy hearing a real autocannon or gatling gun sample in a film, I find the accuracy reflects the nature of the weapon better and thus the threat it poses feels more real.

  • @kurok1sh170

    Anyone who thinks the slowed down rpm is more threatening clearly know absolutely nothing about firearms because the realistic sound is fckn terrifying!

    As a motorcycle guy, I can relate SO HARD! Bike sounds are almost always COMPLETELY wrong in movies. Pisses me off. It would take two seconds for a sound guy to go to RUclips and look up what a (insert bike here) sounds like. It pretty much ruins movies for me.

  • @ParkourEh
    @ParkourEh 9 дней назад

    The realistic sounds are arguably a very strong "jump scare" compared with the dumbed down stock_machine-gun_sound.mp3 file they keep insisting on using. Absolutely better with the realism. No contest. I think the issue is that Hollywood thinks we're dumber than we actually are and are scared to shit with taking any kind of risks. All it takes is one good movie to put in realistic cannon sounds, the audience either doesn't care (which is likely) or loves it, and then sound designers will have more free reign in the future.

    There is a reason water flowing (brooks) are replaced with toilet tank refilling sounds. I like realism, but so not expect this to be embraced by movie makers.

  • @mcarpen89
    @mcarpen89 10 дней назад

    I think it's a copout to say "we can't make it too realistic or it won't sound scary enough. It's all in how you mix it. Lower the levels of the music and everything else. Blast that brrrrt sound as loud as the theater equipment can handle without peaking the speakers. Make it sound like it's drowning out everything. Make the tracers nice and fat and make the impacts bright, explosive, and loud with lots of smoke and shrapnel. It will sound scary as fuck. I think you nailed it in this clip. If that was played at full volume in a movie theater, it would totally change people's perceptions of aircraft cannons and they'd never be able to hear a wimpy "dakka dakka" sound ever again without comparing it to this.

  • @e.l.norton
    @e.l.norton 10 дней назад

    The real sounds are far more impressive and because most viewers are totally ignorant as to how a fighter cannon should sound, they'd probably be taken more by surprise and have more of a cool WTF was that kind of moment hearing the proper sound. This annoyed the crap out of me in the theater. To get so many details right and then be lazy and dumb with this was really annoying.

    It’s less the sounds that bothers me than the fact that the enemy aircraft still has two wings after what must have been more than 10 rounds (of which at least some would have had to have been explosive) hit the wing and ripped through the majority of the structural spars. You don‘t take a strafing hit from a vulcan and just fly on!

    Very late to the party, but got a legitimate question: What was the sound design like in Predator when that Tommy gun leveled that corner of that forest? Cause if that movie used a BRTTTTT sound design, then anyone saying that a movie audience can't recognize the sound is full of BS. If they're using the opposite, then it's their choice that still deprive us of a realistic sound. On my way to check myself.

    As a kid i grew up near a bombing/gun range and grew up listening to the fa18, f111 and even heard a sabre and a few others like machhis and ir ruined movies for me, same with bombs and explosives, after working with explosives il never forget watching a bond film where they wire mi6 to blow, im like surely bond knows thats electrical dets, just pull ome wire out and the whole set wont blow becUs it wont pass self check... But this, your sound edit was fking epic mate, i wish the jets were so loud you couodnt hear for a day in the cinema hahaha cuz thats the way i remember jets up close as a kid. Probably why im partially deaf today with lifelong tinnitus... but man i enhoyed the sound of those aircraft.

    This cannot be excused by saying the audience is ignorant of other type of machine gun sounds.. also the audience is not that ignorant anymore we have social media.. people are exposed to such stuff even if they don't want to.. you can make that brrrr sound more impressive I believe with certain "low frequency" effects.. I dunno.. does not have to be too realistic.. The first movie was more about hot shot sexy young pilots & their girlfriends.. which would lure teenage girls and boys who may not know how war sounds in the 80s.. but this movie is more about machines of war.. which would lure mostly men.. some of whom watched the original one in the 80s, even served in the army because of that movie.. the gun sounds are simply bad.. just bad

    There is no more terrifying noise than a jet diving shooting cannons off your parallel. I knew it was on my side and it was absolutely terrifying. I think to capture things like this,sound designers should help write in scenes that teaches the viewer how to appreciate the sound. A quick sequence of live fire gun runs during training could help build a future scene more dynamically with sound. You can also add battlefield time dilation. It's an interesting battle for sure, balancing sound with the scene and keeping the audience focused where you want.
