Welcome to Modern Day Raptors!
At Modern Day Raptors, I share what it's truly like living with parrots-from the tiniest parrotlets to the majestic macaws. Each day is an adventure with my feathered friends, and I’ve learned so much along the way, from their unique personalities to their specific care needs.
In addition to my parrot care journey, I’ve developed a handcrafted, natural bird toy line, designed to enrich the lives of your feathered companions. You can check out these toys at www.ModernDayRaptors.com.
While I used to breed tarantulas commercially and have some older videos on this channel, I will no longer be posting new tarantula content. I now focus on breeding a few species as a passion project on the side, but my channel is shifting entirely toward parrot care, enrichment, and my feathered friends.
If you're passionate about birds, you’ll find something here for you. Subscribe and join me on this exciting journey of discovery and care with my parrots and beyond!

Excellent video! Doug and you are both precious. Love your pantry setup, too... or laboratory? Versicolorus USED to be called "canary wings," as more yellow replaces the white as they age. In the wild, they are now called "white wings" due to their split off into other territory. I still call my Zeke a canary-wing, as he's domestically raised and not subject to the territory and physiology changes of the wild birds. Not a big deal though. You may call him a white wing and I won't object. :D I'm subbing... you might like my bird videos, too: www.RUclips.com/KutWrite/videos
Thank you and I appreciate the information and support. I’ll have to check out your videos when I get a free chance.
Fantastic video. I love my two white-winged parakeets. Kiwi does the same thing as Baby Doug when he is mad that he has to stay in his cage (like if I'm working). I had to add clips to the cage doors and opening slots because Kiwi and Pistachio learned how to open them quickly. They are so sweet, though. Kiwi and Pistachio made sure to join in with Baby Doug on those machine gun noises 😊
I am glad you enjoyed the video and I love that your two do the cage picking noise. I swear that noise will get under my skin faster than him screaming and he knows it 🤣.
awww how very precious ❤💝🤗😘😃💖❤️😊
They are cute when they are sleepy and snuggly
This is so far the only video on Canary-winged parakeet care as well as the red-bellied parrot, thank you so much for these rare videos!
You’re very welcome. I know when I first got my little Baby Doug I was so confused by all the different names and information out there. I wanted to make something easy to understand while emphasizing their unique personalities.
Awww!! They look like extra fluffy baby budgies 🥰
Yeah parrotlets look all innocent at only being about 30g at adult size. Although do not let their tiny size fool you they are full of sass and chaos 🤣
@ oh I know lol I have 15 budgies 😂 my mama has given me 8 babies in the last year. It’s a lot but I love them all so much! They’re special little creatures 💗
I love parrotletts. They are graceful and special @
They are something special for sure 🥰
What a cutie
Thank you. He’s my little Velcro buddy 🙂
They are beautiful and very rare where I am. I have a Senegal Parrot plus other birds. Great video!
Thank you. Yeah they are fairly uncommon around here too. I had to fly several states over to get Samara in hopes one day they could produce some babies with Toto. I hate that they are not more popular. I think the whole poicephalus genus is underrated. How does your Senegal get along with your other birds? I’ve personally never owned one but from what I’ve gathered they tend to be the least tolerant of sharing their space.
Best birbs ever!
I agree. I absolutely love the poicephalus genus.
What a pretty colorful bird/parrot.
Thank you. He’s a red fronted macaw. They are considered one of the larger species of mini macaws.
Is he OK?
Yeah he’s fine. He’s just practicing his talking before bed. Parrots sometimes will do that when they think no one is watching.
@ModernDayRaptors1 that's sweet. He sounded like he was upset that he had to go to bed!
@@lotstodo he’s just a baby and they always protest bed time 😂. He normally will say “Go to bed” when he’s actually ready to sleep.
@@ModernDayRaptors1 when I was a kid, people kept birds in cages all the time. I realize now how wrong that is. I love birds, but never had one. They seem like a lot of work. I always go talk to birds at Pet Co.
@ yeah they are a life long toddler. They are amazing creatures but the amount of time and energy they require is not for the faint of heart.
Thanks for these tips! One I’d add is a parrot first aid kit which is a specific set of things. Great video!!
I would agree having a first aid kit specifically for a bird is a great idea. They are like toddlers and will find themselves in the most ridiculous situations no matter how much you prepare.
Some great ideas!! Thank you! Another easy and fun foraging method is towel foraging. I take a clean hand towel and sprinkle things like small seeds, millet, chopped veggies, herbs, pellets, etc. then I twist and bunch it up for my conure to inspect and unravel. This can be enhanced with crinkle paper and chew toys too! This is a great option for hesitant foragers since it’s easy to see the food little by little. My expert forager also loves it!
That sounds interesting for sure but I would be worried about chewing on the towel and causing possible impaction problems. This would need to be a supervised activity for sure.
@ yes, definitely a supervised activity. My conure shows no interest in chewing fabrics so it works great for her.
Just a chucklette
Just a little baby 😇
He's so relaxed. Look at those little feet! 💖
Omg he is so relaxed!!! Thank you for sharing him!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You’re very welcome. He likes being on his back normally when I flip him over he says “I’m just a baby”. It’s adorable 🥰
I love that he looks like he’s got little red pants on 🤣
You might need to do a factory reset on the birb
Probably a good idea or maybe download the update 🤣
Looks like that one Katy Perry meme of her malfunctioning eyes at the concert.
I can see that. His blinking reminds me of a lizard 🤣
Pretty cool channel, never heard of small native Americas' parrots before, subscribed!
Thank you so much. Parrotlets are not super common as they can be a pain to breed because of their territorial tendencies but awesome little parrots.
Brownian motion
Not going to lie had to google what that was, although now I can picture it 🤣. Especially because parrotlets are tiny, round, and neurotic.
@ModernDayRaptors1 yes, they are neurotic cute small particles indeed 😁
@ModernDayRaptors1 haha, just decided to Google "Brownian motion parrots" for fun and the first result was "Scientists use Brownian Motion to Explore How Birds Flock Together" 😆
Aha, so they're all like Prince and it's forbidden cupboard. Tiny little monsters 😅 I'd rather deal with my Amazones. Still territorial, but at least manageable and not flying daggers like these ones here! 😂
Yeah I would say parrotlets have a lot in common with lovebirds. They are sassy birds and like you said with their tiny size can maneuver exceptionally well.
So cute but can def bully much bigger birds😂
Oh yeah they are completely unaware of their size 🤣
*glasK*
lol they are not as good as Apollo at identifying items 😅
Curious can you house parrotlet and parakeet together? Can they cross breed 🧐
No they cannot breed as they are completely different species. Housing them together would most likely cause the parrotlet to fatally attack the budgie. Parakeets are mouthy/pushy birds in the way they communicate which would most likely be misinterpreted by the parrotlet causing it to attack. I would strongly advise not housing them together. Although if you had both letting them out for supervised play time may be okay, but again, always supervised.
@ Thanks 🙏
@ you’re very welcome.
Oh my ❤. What is your birds name?
His name is Toto. He is an African red bellied parrot.
relax?
He’s super relaxed
Finger trap are GREAT for foraging. I have budgies and I give them Johnson grass seeds for them to forage for. I attach the seed sprays through the woven parts and they shred it to get to the Johnson grass seed. Woven balls are also great for foraging
That’s a great idea.
Feral
He’s just a baby feral Doug 🤣
😐♾️
👻 🤣
Nope!
That’s pretty much what Zazu was thinking too 🤣
Even birds chew on their "nails" when theyre anxious? Aww
Yeah it’s pretty cute 🥰
Parrots are mostly vegetarian 🙄
He wasn’t being fed the bug I was just showing it to him. Mario beetles are rarely desired by even bug eating creatures as their exoskeleton is extremely hard.
@ That makes much more sense 😅😅
@@gypsylifestyle1838 yeah I only have one bird in my flock that actually likes the occasional bug. However overall most parrots don’t really eat them.
Even the bird is grossed out.
He’s definitely not into hanging with bugs 🤣
The beal screams fuits and seeds so yeah probably not a bug guy xD
Yeah he wasn’t into making new friends today
Looking for a chance to audition, got to get pretty for the judge's ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉😊
She always thinks she’s a star
Wow❤
Pretty cute aren’t they 🥰
❤️❤️❤️🩹❤️🩹💝💝💖💖💓💓💞💞💕💕💗💗♥️♥️❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🤩🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍😘😘😘😘☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
W😍W…!! How sweetly it say Potato 👏🏼👏🏼😍😍😍
She sounded like a little robot when she was a baby 😂. She doesn’t talk as much though sadly since she grew up.
@@ModernDayRaptors1 The more you keep playing with them and keep using certain words repeatedly…more chances they’ll pick up🙏❤️
@@rescue1046she’s more inclined to make random noises these days instead
Love it
They are fun little birds
I am going to bye me two tomorrow
Some advices I am going to have a male and a female
do you know if they are a mated pair or are you just picking out two?
I think they are mated
not just a parrot. birb
Can’t leave out the borbs too 🤣
How long can it be kept in the freezer?
I’ve never actually froze mine so not sure. Although I would not push it past 3 months personally.
I like that guy/girl on your shoulder.
Pika pika
It’s their love language ❤️
That has to be Mike Tyson’s pigeon then😂
There’s a reason why he loves them 😂
She doesn't want you there. Please leave them alone.
He definitely does not want me there but I need to occasionally check to see if they have any more eggs. These guys are rescue pet pigeons and I swap their eggs out for fakes. This prevents them from constantly laying and straining their bodies resources.
You can ask questions next time instead of assuming too
🙁 why , Why are you disturbing pigeon?
I went in to check on him and verify he was still just sitting on fake eggs. Pigeons can get very defensive of their nesting spot and like to show off for their mates.
@@ModernDayRaptors1 🙂👍well done
She is so beautiful! What species is this??
She is a female African red bellied parrot. They are sexually dimorphic and the females stay this green and grey while the males have a large orange belly. They are the lesser known cousins to Senegal parrots.
Remember, it’s faster to switch to your left hook than reloading.
Solid advice
I can't afford the time and financial commitment but I do like to know what it's like because they're amazing animals.
They are extremely expensive and do require a lot of time. I am glad you’re able to get a little bit of that bird ownership experience through this video of Chucky rambling and screaming. I didn’t get into birds until later in my life. I am glad I held off, as I feel like I am better suited to care for them now.
No I don't. That is why I rescued a PIGEON.
I’ve got a couple pigeons as well. They are fun little birds that I don’t feel get enough attention for being awesome pets.
@@ModernDayRaptors1 I agree! We had show and tell at work to help relieve the isolation of work from home. I did one on pigeons. We can change the opnions one person at a time. I have learned so much from my ambassador from the pigeon kingdom.
Maybe im privo but Skippy is my down on luck choice
Not sure what you mean?
I want birbs
They are pretty awesome.
So cute ❤ what's the song called?
it is called "princess" by Elie
