Canon 70-200 f4 - Short Review
Просмотров 53 тыс.11 лет назад
Just a review of my new lens. UPDATE: At the time of this recording I was very picky about camera gear and build quality. I can tell you this is a wonderful lens and it deserves a lot of respect. You will find this lens produces very pleasing images and the build of the lens has very little to do with that. Having said that... I think it is built very well and you will not be let down by its qu...

Erin and Will came to us a year ago and asked if we could capture their special day. This video is one of a three part project to capture that day. We had a really great time working with Erin and Will and I hope you enjoy this film. Thanks

Erin and Will are a amazing couple. We had such a great time getting to know them and filming this short film. They have such a wonderful story to tell. Enjoy! www.vicapic.com
Great video. Just a note to anyone else who will try this. I first tried with my K-3 II, this did not work. After some investigation I found that this was a universal problem, and that although I did get to Debug mode the lens data will not write. It seems that K5-II is the latest camera that supports this. So i bought an old K-5 and it worked like a charm. Also, I did not need to connect via PK Tether. All I needed to do was to copy the debug file to the SD card, insert the SD card, power the camera with the card door open and voila, I was in the Developer mode. (I engaged the Debug mode and card door open in the menu) From there I followed the steps as described. The lens I converted was the 16-50 mm 2.8.
I got the developer mode to work on my k3 II but its not copying the lens data to the card :(
@@DuneKankel Yeah, same here. I was lucky and got a good deal for K-5. It worked just fine. I don't think this function is supported in cameras newer than the K-5 II.
OMG....Thank guys so much! My 50-135mm is working again! I did it with a Mac and a K5IIs and only using a SD card, and it took less time than it would have to dig out my Pentax USB cable. It worked with the first try. Previously, I thought that taping over the contacts or removing the contacts all together (do not think of the movie Airplane!) would solve the problem, but it didn't. With the contacts removed, the camera still thinks it's an SDM lens. Once again, thank you so much! I have golf shoot this weekend and I really need it for that. I had a golf shoot a month ago, and was able to slide by without it because the majority of shots were not the action shots. This is my most expensive lens, and it's great to have it working again. It's part of a troika of lenses for my pro work, with the other two being the 17-50mm Sigma 2.8, and a 10-20mm f/4-5.6 Sigma Read more at: www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/321757-how-convert-sdm-screwdrive-video-25.html#ixzz838r2Wtxn
Anyone had success with a 60-250mm lens? Didn't work for me
Yeah, lots have tried but frankly we don't know what settings need to be applied in the conf file. No reason it shouldn't be fixable, but it hasn't been figured out. Id suspect someone with technical documentation could figure it out. Changing the settings manually would take a very long time via Trial and error.
I don't buy these SDM lenses because those freaks from pentax decided not to include this conversion feature in my k-70.
Thank you , merci, ευχαριστώ πολύ !!!! Hi, you saved my wonderful 16-50 from being useless for me! Thank You so much!
Stupid question: If I buy a already converted Pentax lens, I will not not need to make any further adjustments to my camera (KP)?
I have K3 camera (Firmware 1.30.0) and these instructions didn't work with that model/firmware. I found working PKTether version for that model but writing "LENS DAT to SD" didn't work. However I had older K-m camera and with that and these instructions I got my Pentax DA* 50-135 Lens converted. Thanks !!!
Awesome news!!! I am happy this tutorial is still providing value. Yes, I don’t believe PKTeather ever really worked with the K3. It’s very fortunate you have an older camera body that is still compatible. Enjoy the newly converted lens!!!
Worked like a charm!! Thanks!
hi, do you know if it's possible to do this with a k-70?
Thank you, so much! I couldn't get any procedure to get into Debug mode on my K70. SDM would only focus on close objects, had to manually focus for landscapes. I borrowed a K-5, attached my DA*16-50 and followed your instructions. Voila!
Thank You!!! Worked through my k_5 for a 16-50 ... only difference is had to exit debug before I could see the results.
Hi, is there a pk tether version available for the k3 ii? Thankyou
Hi, you saved my wonderful 16-50 from being useless for me! Thank You so much!
how do you get pk tether on a mac os x?
I don't believe it works on Mac. So sorry... Good news is windows laptops can be found for almost free at Pawnshops if you don't have a friend who will let you barrow theirs for the day.

Mine is wonderful on my 50d`s
Thanks mate! Following the video i just decided to buy a 50-135mm with dead SDM for a bargain price and convert it to screwdrive by myself and it seems it worked very well !
I kiss your golden hands, dear, kind man!
What if I use speed light in low light condition for portrait? Or wedding photograp?
mnm ihsan a prime lens would probably serve you better
Justin Hamblin so where is 70 to 200mm f4 use for
You have quite a bit of homework to do. I suggest you rent one to try it out. If it works for you, GREAT. Remember, f4 is not great in low light. For all else, it will mostly work fine for you. It isn't sealed against the weather, it doesn't have IS, it is a f4 lens, it is NOT good in low light. For the money, you would be better served by a 35 to 50mm prime & a 70 to 135mm prime to do your wedding / portrait work. The 70-200 f4 is a budget work horse lens for news photographers mainly.
Justin Hamblin ohhh thank you bro
THANKS MATE...! I REGAINED MY DA*300mm f/4. I WAS NOT ABLE TO USE IT FOR A LONG TIME BECAUSE OF SDM DEFECT. THX A LOT..!
Way to go!!! Glad to hear that!
Hi, how can I obtain the files from dropbox for my K5? thanks for your help in advance...
I got it thanks you
Thank you so much. It worked fine.. Now, I can use my favorite lens again.
Wonderful! Glad it worked for you!
Wow, thanks a lot. My 50-135mm came back to life. You make my day !!
Great news!
Thank you. I have just completed this on my K-5 with Firmware 1.16. There were many more lines to be modified. But it works, my 50-135 has been revived. Anyone attempting this, be very careful. In my version of the lenseep.lns there were extra C0's in the line numbers on the left and also some in columns 05 and 08 that should not be modified. Also if you don't have the usb cable, the nikon cable UC-E6 will work.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I am sure it will help someone. I am glad you were successful!
I dont get menu number 2 when turn kamera of an on. And it is unplugged from PC. Can you please meka a link for the dropbox files?
Ole Nørholm check the description, the link is there 😀.
I found the link. But i still don't get the menu so i can moove on. I have the newest software in the camera. Hope yoy can give me helt so my 50-135 will wake up
Ole Nørholm I have only worked with the K-5ii. My understanding is they behave the same as other cameras. Just be patient and follow the process and you should be fine.
will u update dropbox files for k70 cam ? tnx
I am very sorry. I didn't create the files nor do I know how to. I didn't create the "hack" procedure either, I only organized it into a video from several threads. I was hoping to simplify the process for others. Lucky for you, prices of old Pentax Cameras are low. My suggestion is to purchase/rent a camera that is available for the mod. Just remember, it costs $220 as of today to get an official SDM fix, so if you are buying a camera for this, keep it under the cost of repair and you will be money ahead.
Too good
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM or 70-200 f/4l which is good for 80D ?
Well, They are probably both good. I would suggest you think more about what you will be shooting and purchase the most used lens. Remember, 70-200 is a long lens, and if you find yourself looking for wide shots from time to time, it won't serve you best.
thanks
thanks
Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM or Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM or 70-200 f/4l which is good for canon 80 D ?
Hard to answer you on that one. The 80d is a great camera so any of these lenses will work on it. Don't worry too much about your camera, worry about the field of view and quality of glass. I might steer you towards the 70-200, only because you get a constant f4 which is very nice if you shoot manually or zoom in and out a lot. The constant aperture is nice since it is one less thing to worry about. Now, if you need 300mm, then you don't have a choice. You need the 70-300. Happy hunting!!! BTW, try looking at Flickr for examples of what these lenses can do, that might help you make your decision.
Justin, finally figured it out. Using Windows 10. I tried clicking on the two files and sliding them over to the card. Didn't work. Then I tried right clicking on the files and 'send to' and that worked. I now am a happy camper with a 16-50 lens that works fast and almost quiet. Never worked so well. Thanks for the video.
Couldn't get to Development menu. Every time I copied the two filed to the card, powered down, disconnected cable, powered back on and Development Menu didn't show up, just normal camera settings. I checked and it was in debug mode. Camera K5, lens 16-50.
You may want to check your camera firmware version. Make sure you are on the most recent version. Next, reformat your card, and download the files again. I know some people with mac have issues with the files being renamed. make sure that isn't happening.
Im a Pentax user but i don't know what SDM stand for? LOL :D Can anyone explain? I always thought its a ScrewDriveMotor but no :P
Vlad Fishermann I think Sonic or Silent drive motor.
Supersonic Drive Motor - ive read it on Wikipedia already ;)
I would like to inform anybody having the well known SDM failure first to try the following "repair" (my AF was not completely dead but was only working in 1 of 20 cases or it focussed veeeeeery slowly in tiny steps by repeatedly pressing the button): - Turn on your camera and focus any object by pressing half down the release button - manually move the focus ring back and forth - check if AF is working again by focussing objects in different distance. - you may repeat these steps until the AF is alive again Good luck :-)
Worked with mine that died this morning. Slow AF but working again. Probably will need to convert to scrdrv af sooner than later but thanks for the hack!
Gonna try this on my 16-50 that sdm died on. Great vid, tnx
Excellent. Worked on my 16-50 that I recently lost AF altogether. Now to get the it to shutter down to the higher f-stops. Sticking at wide open intermittently.
All current file locations worked for me - Jan2017.
Side note - do NOT check off the windows box that says always open LNS files with this app. If you do, it will save in the default format. In the case below, a TXT file. You can still make the save but select ALL FORMATS in the file type and add .lns to the file name and save to the NEW location. I accidentally overwrote my original - simple fix by downloading from lens before proceeding.
Larry Hunt way to go! Glad you got it done! Enjoy your "new" lens!
Thanks so much. After trying to repair the SDM on my own (and failed) this helped me so much. I tried to convert the SDM to screwdrive like 4 years ago with an k200d and it didn't worked. Now I finally have an working lens. :)
Glad this worked for you! I understand a lot of people couldn't follow the process as it was previously outlined. I had to put the steps together from different threads, which is why so many had issues. I am happy I was able to help.
Hello...will this work with K3 as well. My Pentax 50-135 stopped focusing. Does it have to be USB cable or HDMI will work as well? Kindly guide...thanks
I am hearing people have trouble converting with the K-3. Unfortunately, I don't have access to one to test this out and resolve the problem. I would recommend renting the camera or sending it to the user in Pentax Forums who will convert the lens for you.
I just changed a recent fail 16-50 Pentax and a 50-135 that had been shelved for a while lens to screw drive. I am very pleased with the results and want to thank anyone and everyone who had a hand in making this conversion possible. I used a K-5 body for the conversion.
It worked with my 16-50. Thanks the video is very very simple to folow!
Thanks Justy! Very helpful. Worked great!!
Glad to hear that! Enjoy the revitalized lens! I love mine.
I had been looking around and wanted to try this but the instructions were kind of iffy until I found your video. Wish Pentax would put option in the menu.
I was in the same boat. I decided to dig for the actual process and fix my lens. I was hoping to give others confidence to do this and save them some time. It isn't terribly hard, but without a step by step it can be scary. I am happy this helped you and I hope it continues to help others.
Cool...was going to take it apart and try unjamming the motor...this was much easier. The noisy screw drive does not bother me.
Hi, could you be so kind and include a link to the files needed? thanks
Hello, the link is in the comments. :)
Hello! It might. you need to check the drobbox folder mentioned in the description. this is where I downloaded the hack files.
Eric Barriga Wonderful! I am very happy to hear this worked for you! Happy shooting!
@@BamJham hello,may i asking a questions? ruclips.net/video/dBoisNGBrNo/видео.html Why i can't saving lens rom for SD card .
Hi, do you know if the hack software would work with a Pentax K-X body?
I don't remember seeing that camera in the hack folder. I would go and take a look at the link to dropbox in the description, perhaps the user who created these files resolved the issue.
Seems like PKTether doesn't support the K3. Is there a way to use the K3 to do the conversion (sans PKThether I guess)? Thanks for your help!
Bummer. I don't have a K-3 to work out why PKtether isn't working. I did a quick search of the Pentax Forms, it seems the camera's firmware may be an issue. Perhaps you need to upgrade to get it to work. If you can't, there is a user on the forms who will convert the lens for you at a reasonable price.
Have been wanting to do convert the DA* 16-50mm SDM for years.... finally after following the steps, got it working on the 1st try!! Thank you
Way to go! You are welcome!
Followed your steps, worked perfectly. cant thank you enough for this.
You are very welcome! I am happy this helped you!
My Good friend Justin i have the really well built and bulky lens 70-200 f/2.8 L USM IS II and believe it (or not!) the swithces ARE plastic TOO! (*So need to WORRY ~ complain..) | Thanks :-)
+Aléxandros Z. Thank you Alexandros! I made this video some time ago and yes... I was a bit picky about lenses and gear. I care much much less about the gear now. All I care about now is the final image and plastic switches have very little to do with that!
Thank you Justin
Hi Justin If you use high ISO to push up the shutter to reduce camera shake then what about the sharpen of the photo? is it going to be same sharpness if you use with IS??
Sharpness is based off of several things but primarily focus, aperture, iso, and lens quality. While shutter speeds do affect blur it will not affect sharpness as much as the other settings above. Of you can afford the is version you will be pleased with its results. Btw, I decided to sell this and buy a pentax k-5ii. The camera is weather sealed and has in body image stabilization. Loving every minute of it! I am also using the 55-300wr lens which is weather sealed. At 200mm you still get f4 which is comparable to the canon lens. Great iq as well. NOTE: I realize canon L glass has an advantage, but you get so much more for your money with Pentax.
Justin Hamblin Hi Justin, If i use a Speed Light , does this solve the problem of low light ?
Speed lights will solve this problem. F4 is actually a good aperature for most situations. If the area is a bit too dark after that, then using the speed lights will help. Remember, this lens is very versitile, you can use it for portraits and wild life. I think the lens works great for portrait work. While the focus plane is not as thin as a f2.8 would be, it does pretty well at blowing out the background, especially if you use 135-200mm. Happy Shooting!
can i use this for indoor portraits such as weddings, family picture etc..
Thumbs up, i just got this lens for a 70d Canon, can't wait to try it. great review the buttons and plastics do not bother me, it feels great and well made.
