Two male Periophthalmus barbarus, Atlantic mudskippers, fighting in our tidal tank. They are so fast that only when using slow motion can you really see the fighting moves they do.
Feeding mudskippers
Просмотров 7784 месяца назад
We feed our mudskippers daily with a variety of food suitable for this species, their size and what they would find naturally in the wild depending on season. Suitable food for mudskippers includes algae based food, fine chopped mussel, bits of raw prawns and crab, small insects and other invertebrates. On todays menu is small bits of fresh raw prawns feed out during low tide.
Mudskippers introduced to tidal mangrove tank
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.4 месяца назад
It has been 4 years since we started building and setting up the tidal mangrove paludarium. It has been running only with snails and bumblebee gobies, but we are finally releasing mudskippers to the tank. Since we are in New Zealand it has been very hard to source them, but we have finally manage to get 3. After a month in quarantine at a government facility, they where available on the market....

My first complete pass of a little bush moa turntable. Modeled in Maya with xGen and rendered with renderman 22. by this point there are soo many things I want to redo, but this is version 1.
wow that looks awesome i am also planning to make my self a kreisel tank do you have any suggestions?
How do you quarantine mudskippers? Did you use any medicine on them?
we had a specific tank set up for quarantine and deworming. This is a tank with very low water table, not deeper than what the fish can have head and majority of body above water, so about 2 cm. Tank is heated up by heat lamps to a degree of about 28-29 degrees C and about 27 C in the water. Air should always be warmer than the water. High humidity and daily water changes. A double dose of deworming medicine Praziqantel for 14 days. as parasitic worms and trematodes can be very common.
@@matlarswe21 Thanks so much for sharing that. Another question, I got two mudskippers, although they are coming from freshwater. When do you think would be a good time to introduce salt? After the quarantine or before? what was the praziquantel concentration used?
I really like mudskippers and mangroves and always wanted to build a tank for them, would you please make a video about how you set up the tank (how did you create the "mud"?), how do you clean it, how do you create the tides and all of that. Hope it isn't to much to ask - thank you for your videos so far! love them!
Thanks for your interest and questions. Sorry for a late reply. Thats a good idea. would love to set up a demonstration tank. in the meantime, there are a few options regarding mud as a substrate, which is the best practise substrate to use. In this case we have sourced the mud from a estuary, this is great as you will get the intact biota too that will help with cleaning and maintaining your tank. this means, you dont have to clean it. This tank, looks after itself., The mud acts as a biofilter. There is also the options of actually making the mud yourself, using natural pottery clay and parts sphangum moss, cocnut fiber and reptisoil that can be purchased in well stocked petshops. The receipte can be found online in the "Mudskippers" group on fb. Another option depending on where you live is actually buying it. Lnsome places it can be found and sold as lotus mud or pond or water lily clay. The tide is made by having a sump underneath the main tank and drilled pipes at the bottom of teh display tank. everything is gravity feed and only connected to a pump on a timer. propably the easiest way to create a tide setting. Hope that helps to begin with.

so cute :3
what crabs are those?
the crabs you have seen are nz mud crabs.
is it brackish or freshwater
Brackish. 1,005%
Beautiful tank!!
Where did you get the dirt? Is it from outside or from the store because I’m thanking about doing this to my tank does they need brackish water?
This is sourced from a estuary. Has heaps of benefits, but may also introduce unwanted critters, so do keep an eye on that.
Awesome tank!
thanks!
@@matlarswe21I just got mudskippers. I have searched everywhere to find a build like yours. Where did you get the clay/mud?
OMG!!!! The tank looks absolutely beautiful!!! So natural looking, a real inspiration!!! 😍🤩👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much! 😊
I just purchased one today where did you get the mud from and that’s all the water it needs ? That looks much natural for them.

adorable guys
I know, right!
Awesome tank btw. I wonder how hard it is to clean and maintain.
It is pretty easy as it is a full ecological system and therefore keeps itself very healthy and easy to maintain. Does not require a filter for example as the mud acts as a natural filter. The occasional water change , but mostly its just topping up the water that evaporates and cleaning the glass from some algae growth that the snails miss and spashed up mud from the muddies..
Congratulations! Looks like a great setup! I hope to see more videos and would love to hear more about how you are caring for them.
Im sure we can make some more videos soon

Are you going to update us on your tidal tank? :)
Wya
Do you do anything to the water that's removed during low tide? In the real world the water coming back in would have been mixed with different brackish/saltwater and have different organics and nutrients.
This is very amazing and cool! All it needs is a tiny corner little above-tideline sandy beach section and shoreline. 😊 🏝️
Just like toilet bowl.😁
What type of substrate did you use?
ive wanted to do something like this for quite some time and the only way ive been able to make it work is with 2 pumps on timers that click every 8 hours for about 60min each how did u do it?
Cool project, great work.. Question? how do you keep the water quality?
What livestock is in this tank other than the mudskippers? Looks really cool!
ah, NZ....greetings to Henry, the Tuatara, my friend :)
what kind of crabs are those?
I loved this would love to see this 4 times this size
What kind of wood are you using and what kind of substrate? I want to make this style tank for some mangrove tree crabs.
We have the same first nameeeee
@@calamari.jaksun8914 No wayyyyy
But actually I was wondering the same thing, I'm doing a red claw crab tank and I want to make it as close to a mangrove habitat as possible. I wanna find the wood, especially since it's the closest I've seen to resemble the roots of a mangrove tree.
Very innovative. How do you deal with water stains?
Yo what happen to the tank
with the timelapse you can really see how the creatures inside (especially crabs) tend to move around and around, back and forth doing almost always the same path. I just wonder how much this can be frustrating for a living creature...at the end of the day, they are just made for open space and freedom, not for cages. Just my thoughts
What type of crabs were those? That tank also would be great for red claw crabs if that tank was brackish water!
This is friggin awesome man. You need to make a video on making one. I'll bet it'll blow up
you are the only one on the internet doing this, at least, recording it and uploading it. that title is yours.
Update please
SICK!
👍😁👍
I can only properly see a crab but what fish species is that? can't determine it
Wow what an absolute beautiful tank
Really cool setup
That tank is freakin awesome!! Love it, subbed!!👍
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in my 20 years of age.
Dream tank!
Bro this is absolutely awesome!
So cool! Great idea!
oh my god this has to be the COOLEST TANK SETUP I HAVE EVER SEEN! :O
this is so awesome. i always wanted a tank like this. which crabs are living in there?
Thanks. This kind of habitat set up would work great for fiddler crabs and red claws, which I used to keep in set ups like this living overseas. However, now Im currently keep a native mud crab from NZ. They are great to help with algae control and eating any dead stuff or left overs. No other crabs are on the market here, sadly.
@@matlarswe21 thanks for your reply. i know that problem. here in germany you can buy some species but not all im interested in. i am breeding geosesarma 'black leg' and also keep a tuerkayana magnum (discoplax magna) and some mrtasesarma obesum sp. emerald. but hell... i want some fiddlercrabs in a mangrove tank. but its so hard to get them here...
Incredible! Great job
Thank you :)
