Cars are designed to crumble for a reason. Acceleration/deceleration is what puts physical strain on any thing in the physical world. So while you may not be crushed in an accident, your limbs, head and internal organs will go jostling around absolutely everywhere. Lunge your head forward as fast as you can and then stop it. Hurts, don't it? Now, imagine doing that at 40 mph or, if you're hitting another driver, 80 mph. Imagine what that does to your brain.

@cata18tm it depends i think if you crash into a large saloon car with big crumple zones you can use there crumple zones to slow you down. however if you hit a tree or somthing you will be badly hurt... the car is still probly one of the safest super minis on the market, just rember dont swerve to doge the car and hit a tree and you will be fine XD

lol yeah, even ferraris, lamborginis etc are usually black in moscow, datz cuz we have kinda "elite syndrome" which states that black color is ddiplomatic, serious and kinda elite lol. I personally not from moscow and i also love black fitting color i dont know why, but looking at the thousands of black cars is weird every time im in moscow :)

Ich fahre einen Smart Fortwo Coupè Bj 2001 und bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Fahrzeug. Ich fühl mich sehr sicher da es ein sehr gutes Sicherheitskonzept hat. In einem größerem Auto fühl ich mich nicht so sicher.

cars are not colourfull, i see only grey,black,brown cars but here when i live is colourfull cars like red,yellow,green,silver,blue and so on :)

i heard guys saying that the smart is safe because doesn't destroy almost at all and stuff ok you won't die mashed but the car doesn't absorb the impact at all because it's too short, resulting that the people in the car will suffer a great shock and injuries because of the sudden stop and almost instant decelaration

@tcpnetworks Just tell me this : If you got 3 cars of the same weight. 1 with no criple zone, 1 with a 1 meter criple zone engine in front and an other one with the engine in the back. Will they all bounce back the same distance and same way? Will they all decelerate the same once hitting that wall?

@tcpnetworks hint : in this case there's friction and force that is requiered to bend the metal that has to be taken into account. If this wasn't true then the cars before the 80s would be the safest in the world!

@tcpnetworks actually not all the cars will be trown back. The crumble zone actually takes in that opposite force by bending which also slows the car instead of a brutal stop.

The 4 of 5 star EuroNCAP rating applies to the second generation Fortwo. This is the first generation which got 3/5. Good for it's age and size. 3/5 stars for any car in the late-ish nineties was good especially for a car of this type.

That happens to all cars in an offset crash, just not to the same extent as the Fortwo.
