“The Wandering Boy”
From Adam Hurt’s “Earth Tones,” which I learned from one of his online workshops. Adam modeled it after a version from Paul Brown and the late Mike Seeger.

Billy in the Lowground

A cover of Noah Cline’s “Sandy River Belle tuning” version. Can’t blame me for trying, and I’ve been trying for a while. Played on his Bottle Gourd banjo #144. A shade sharper, here tuned c#-A#-D#-G#-A#. “Billy in the Lowground” actually refers to the protestant William of Orange defeating the Irish Catholic forces at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, ensuring foreign occupation would continue i...

One of the older tunes in the catalog, with its first appearance in 1549 Scotland. The verses I chose are from various sources, the more recent from Ben Kiser’s version. As a child, I listened to Burl Ives’ version, and some of his lyrics appear here. The refrain is from a version heard minimally in the much-celebrated 1941 film, “Sergeant York,” as sung by Lee “Lasses” White, who earlier had p...

I’ve been meaning to put up a gourd version of this tune, modeled after Adam Hurt’s treatment. Gourd banjo #144 from Noah Cline, tuning is c-A-D-G-A (key of C, my preference currently due to something else I’ve been working on…)

from Omer Forster, atypically tried in the clawhammer style. Indebted to Arnie Naiman, whose yt version I’ve had on repeat for the past few years. Standard G tuning

Reprised as a solo, since I wasn’t really happy with earlier efforts. From Luther Davis/arr. Adam Hurt (“Back to the Earth…”) Lily of the Valley (the flowering plant), is poisonous. The tune is a harsh mistress.. Bottle Gourd banjo #144 from Noah Cline. In “Double-A” tuning (e-A-E-A-B).

A study of Barry Crannell’s wonderful version, which I’ve long-admired, in Double-D tuning. Barry described Sally Ann as “Julianne’s smarter sister..” I should resurrect Julianne sometime soon, and feature the two in a medley (?)
