Antique drum table SAVED! Veneer damage FIXED with "Retique It" a paint on wood that can be stained
Просмотров 6 тыс.4 года назад
This antique drum table had a gooey spot on the top that wouldn't come off. When I was sanding the top I overdid it in that spot and sanded through the veneer wood top! In the past I would have had to paint the top of the table to cover the damage. But I found and have been using a product called "Retique It" on projects like this. I have also used it over a laminate table top and it looks amaz...

Hello, how come you dont show painting cabinets while still up in the kitchen?
well made!
How much weight can it hold
Wonder if this works on a curve bunkhouse
Great job. 4 years later. Lol
It looked so much better before using the graining tool. I am planning to redo our master bath and will use the retique it but no graining tool.
So youre supposed to roll the graining tool from one edge to the other, as you drag across the surface ? Also I wonder if you turned the tool 180 degrees and drag in the same direction, would it be easier to create a natural wood grain appearance.
I was talking into my phone telling her to turn as she glide the tool, but she couldn't hear me lol.
Brilliant! Can you give an update as to how it's held up please?
Sure! We still use it & it is still sturdy&even the paint had held up after a few years!
It looks splotchy bc you didn't read the instructions and used the wrong stain.
wow seriously? why didnt this video pop up when i researched. im so sad im just seeing this. i tackled my 2nd dining table project and its been nothing but a nightmare, especially now knowing the set i am working with. we were gifted a beautiful antique table that we recently learned is the longest running set thats still being sold and retails nearly $9000 and i accidentally sanded through the veneer (major face palm + nauseous moment to say the least). i had no clue the top was veneer and had i known that, i wouldve known how to properly and safely sand it. my spot was embarassingly large as my husband suggested i use a belt sander and well, im sure you understand how the rest of that went. i did my best to just do the proper sanding afterwards, stained it with 3 different types (i did a mixture at first as i was trying to achieve a coastal/driftwood look) one of which was early american which saved my table! but i really wish i had seen this video first bc it wouldve made my life way less stressful. your table came out beautiful!
Oh goodness, I'm so sorry that happened to your antique table. I hope you are able to fix it & enjoy it!
@@TrueBlueStablesLLC it took about a month and a lot of elbow grease but we got her there lol lesson learned! ill tell you though, you are one of few who made a video in regards to this issue. so i thank you for that
@@jessii_d you aren't the only one who sands through... it happens! but I'm glad to hear you figured out a solution!
I don't know how safe it is noting that you cut so much of the wood off the board. It would have maybe looked at hardware in some respect (steel, etc). Even that small notch that is going into the weak portion is even further into the wood. That's all that woods hanging by.
I used a vinyl peel and stick wood grain wallpaper. It's like wrapping a car except you're wrapping the top of a plastic table. Easier application and less expensive.
I just discovered Retique It on Pinterest so looking at videos about it! New subscriber! It looks great!
Love this build. We just bought a new travel trailer that doesn't have a bunk ladder. My plan had been to buy a commercial ladder that hooks over the curved bunk rail. Unfortunately I've found that the edge of the bunk is made of some kind of cheap plastic with padding wrapped around it. So it has zero structural strength (like most things in modern RVs). 🤬 Your video gave me the idea to go up and over that rail to have the ladder supported by the bunk itself (possibly screwed in) without putting pressure against the flimsy rail. Thanks for the inspiration.
So I guess I’d be good with varathane penetrating wood stain?
as long as you use the gel stain. Not the penetrating stain in the video.
You severely compromised the structure of that wood.
How so?
@@haunthunterify left about 1/4 to 1/2 in inch of wood left. Downward pressure will keep testing that cut out
@@Eraera1 I don't understand, you explanation makes no sense. Not being mean but I plan to make one and want to improve the current design if I can. Please elaborate.
I see your point....but 3 years later... no issues. It's held up fine. It's supported by the floor, the hook is basically there to hold it in place.
it clearly states NOT to use penetrating stain...
Oh I love this! It is so much better than what we were looking at online. Is yours still holding up? Also, do you have issues with the bunks not getting enough air and if so what do you use?
It's been over a year and the ladder has held up really well! Its still sturdy. Works great for people climbing it, including me for sheet changing. Even the paint still looks great with minimal wear or chipping. It does get stuffy for the bunk beds, so we use a plug in fan at night for airflow.
Thinking about doing this with a bi fold I have. Thanks for the tutorial!
What heat setting do you put the gun to?
WOW!!
I believe you’re supposed to use non-penetrating stains on that liquid wood paint
Hi, great video, right to the point. Has this held up? I’m looking to repair my veneer dining room table top that’s damaged but I’m afraid this will just chip off.
I sold the table so unfortunately I don't know how it holds up long term.
I sold the table so unfortunately I don't know how it holds up long term.
That’s so pretty
What was the height dimensions? 52... until the 4" gap but total height?
I can measure it for you, but just know it'll vary for each campers bunk bed height!
@@beautyfromashesllc8983 if you get a chance great if not I'll wing it. Pretty sure we have the same camper or at least the exact same setup ;) great job though. Got my board ripped and waiting til have time to work on it more
The frog cameo was stellar!!! 🤩🤣💖
why not just use sand paper or a orbital sander... It will be less damage to the wood under it up and will be more even as well.
Great video. I like the fast pace. No need to overdo it. Well done.
The background music is a mess...just to watch you is fine enough
That turned out so good 🥳
can you make me one? Please?
Nice job
Fantastic job Girl friend! Looks beautiful
You did a great job! Girl’s rule!
Thank you! Glad you liked it
Thank you for sharing your experience... We noticed you are using penetrating stains on liquid wood. It's great that it worked out but we don't recommend penetrating stains. We suggest using a Gel Stain or Varathane fast dry premium stains for best results.
Stains ( oil base or solvent type) first seal then a gel stain.
You did not have to use a poly?
You should use a poly to protect it.
Yes I sealed it with polyurethane
She must be from California
Mine was horrible! It was so clumpy and I stirred until my hand and arm almost feel off and the lumps never came out! I still put on and sanded lumps but it did not cover my patches like I had hoped and why I bought The product. I’ve Sense read many other reviews on this same issue. So disappointing and expensive!
Did you contact the company? I didn't have this problem...but that would be frustrating!
I had to pour mine into a different container so I could mix it well. The container it came in wasn't big enough. I was able to use a stir stick and get all the clumps out.
This was exactly what I was looking for ! Thank you for doing this video. I want to turn plain off-white bathroom cabinets/drawers into a gray driftwood looking finish.
Oh cool! Have to let us know how it goes! I've never used on cupboards.
That looks awesome! Great job!
Thank you!
