Piloted flight of the UTIAS Ornithopter by Dr. James DeLaurier. July 8, 2006. Toronto, Ontario Filmed by Jim Downy. Video copyright Project Ornithopter Inc. www.ornithopter.ca
Dune
And Chat-GPTr invented it.
Wow. Very rare VW Doka. And some kooky airplane too.
They actually built a lot of these back in the day none of them worked any better.
It’s flying despite the wing movement, not because of it. 😂
I must not fear, fear is the mind killer. -that terrified pilot
Takeoff was sadly impeded by the size of the pilot's balls.
Or, imagine a dogfight with ten of these after each other.
They put all the money in development of the ornithopter. Nothing left for a good camera to document the first flight.
is this real?
Yes, they also have photo of entire team who developed it (university student in toronto)
@@forestforce2951 isnt it further developed? couldnt find newer versions. And also this flapping looks like it would exert same force upwards and downwards with every flap
How is finished?
You know that old adage 'if it looks good it flies good' Well... yeah.
Good effort, well done.
I think they're cool.
17 years ago there was no internet
Then how did this get posted on You Tube 17 years ago?
Huge earnest effort. Poor outcome. These folks sometimes change the world. Grateful to them.
Bad piggies:
Bad piggies vehicle
Yeah, when you can mount that on your back, let me know.
The wings would have lifted it just fine without the flapping.
BIRDS WATCHING : keep flapping those wings , maybe one day ( chuckle ) you'll fly 😂😂😂 HAW! HAW ! HAW !!
The wings need check valves to block air going down and open going up
For some reason, it gives me the chills. Seeing something that isn't supposed to move like that (planes are usually rigid, that's why they are fixed wing aircraft), move like it was a living being is just uncanny and eerie. Good engineering tho!
Remember this is 17 years ago😂
@superbmediacontentcreator I know planes' wings can ve very flexible, but in this video they move almost like an animal
@superbmediacontentcreator I KNOW!!! I KNOW planes are flexible, I KNOW what an ornithopter is, I am just SAYING it LOOKS weird, why do you treat me like an idiot?
@superbmediacontentcreator an ornithopter is an aircraft that flies by flapping it's wings, I know that, I'm not an idiot. But why do you speak in such a condescending tone? You really are making my blood boil
@@palomaelegante Don't mind him. People like that are weirdos lol the plane does look uncanny. I've never seen one of these before, but if this video wasn't so old, I would think it was CGI
Paul Atreidis and his mom fleeing from the Harkonnen. Year 10,191 - colorized.
Crosswind and you're done.
Time travel must be true as we've gone back to the late 1800s
It's literally just pushing air up and down with no actual net lift lmao
Gotta love fixed wing birds.
Those flappers were keeping from gaining altitude! Even the Wright bros would have said...wtf!
if it had two sets of wings in a counter motion i reckon there would be better stability
It looks like CGI
Just you wait until the technology matures!
Yeah, me too. If I hadn’t seen it, I wouldn’t have believed it either.
I hate to be a spoilsport....While this contraption did fly, this was not due to lift induced by the flapping "wings". All lift was induced by the fixed lower wing. Sorry....But that's how it is.
dune is real
Why ?
Getting seasick on an airplane is a first.
UM...they're called Propellors, m'Kay?? Wilbur and Orville invented them, along with the Bi-Wing Glider configuration. They were State-of-the-Art, back in 1903. We ALL know that aluminum monoplanes, more powerful engines, and, eventually, Turbojets came to dominate the Industry. If God meant for us to have Ornithopters, he would have given us Wings.
Why?
They spent so much money on the plane, they had to go to the thrift store for a camera
Oh my God! It flew! Until I saw it off the ground, I was thinking all we needed was for it to be filmed in black and white, to be chased by Model T's, And to be accompanied by some zany piano music
I wouldn't consider that flight. The vehicle never got out of ground-effects height. You don't have true flight if you are compressing the air between the wings and the ground/water.
