The ups and downs of 33 months of ownership and having at long last the privilege of owning the car of my boyhood dreams. Then passing the responsibility forward to a new owner.

Silver Shadow (Part 6) 18 month ownership and a trip for its annual service.
Просмотров 24 тыс.Год назад
I have now owned the car for 18 months and it's April 2023 and time for its annual service. Let's see if buying the way I did has managed to keep the cost of maintenance at a reasonable level. It's also now time to look at passing her on as I don't have the time to drive her and maybe somebody else can take responsibility for preserving her into the future.
Rolls Royce Silver Shadow ownership (Part 5) 6 months ownership.

Well I've had 6 months ownership of the Shadow. It has returned from winter slumber but how did it do? Am I going to spend £000's commissioning it or will it start like a dream? Watch the video and see for yourself if I have made the correct decision in buying this cult vehicle.

Cut the damn music!
I’d just like to say, the Morgan you have is such a special car, a hard top would make a difference. I’ve owned E Type Jaguars from new, 6 Porsches , & many Mercedes cars, Morgan ownership for the last 20 years. I feel so privileged to have had the journey I’ve been on. I hope I never have to part with my Morgan, even when something drops off, I ❤ the car. I went to BP to fill up on Friday, even after 15 years with this car, I was delayed talking to others who wanted to speak with me & look at the car.
Great video and certainly doesn’t come across as showing off. Good to see you enjoying the fruits of your hard work 👍
I saw (BYR344T ) on 1/11/24: in east London.UK) i was driving my silverbirch Rover p5b coupé) it was dark but i could see it was that beautiful light metallic blue. I was sitting in traffic on opposite side of the road , with my window down, i actually heard it's throaty exhaust note. Which you dont always notice. The silver shadow is my favourite roll's id like a late 70's example.
Cannot hear you with the music
Spoked wire wheels, Please!
Have you tried maintaining them?!!!!
@@rowebbroadking7237 a fair point. LOL
(13:40) _I_ much prefer to be able to look back over my bank statement and say: 'That IS nice!!' What an effin' waste of money!
Whatever floats your boat!
What a car. SO much character! Being a cyclist, I would definitely all the headroom you get in this one. I like the 3-wheeled Moggies, too, with their V-twin engines. Treasure all your experiences; every day is a gift with these cars. Aloha.
Couldn't agree more!
but alas, the days of the V-Twin Morgan is over. S&S no longer make that engine and they've gone to a 3 cylinder "under the bonnet" design. Not they haven't done this before!
As you don't seem to get any modern 'luxuries' and all Morgans are just stunning then an older one makes just as much sense and it feels ok to store it over winter. I remember the first BM I sat in was just the same hard seats but they looked hard as well , I have a very comy saab , Thanks for the video I'm slightly less envious now.
It's just my opinion. Give it a try!
Hmm what a Dialekt Non englisch speakers Like me wondering is this englisch 😂🎉
Methinkso!
Bad video!!! In your kitchen??? RR????????
Comfiest seat!
I have spent £30,000 on my 1973 2 door Mulliner Park Ward Saloon ive owned it 7 years tjat includes some paintwork
Wow! Glad that wasn't me!
She's a beauty. My girlfriend's dad was a surgeon and had a new one. He also had a Ford Cortina for popping to the shops.
Mk3 Cortina GXL with the twin headlights was my favourite!
why the change to a period incorrect number plate, if was a 50s car and meant to be then may make sense but a 70s car would have been yellow. I see people do this even on 80s cars will they start doing this on 2024 cars in a few years
Thought it looked nicer! Personal taste I suppose.
A strange thing is that a car inspired to Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was the nice 1975 Cadillac Seville , the first "compact" Cadillac and the competitor of successful German Mercedes and BMW luxury berlina or sedan in american market in the 70s, the Cadillac Seville was a great and the only success against the european sedan in USA, but the strange was that the overall layout, the design was not inspired by Audi BMW Mercedes, but by Rolls-Royce of the period in general proportions etc. And it's difficult say which car : Cadillac or Rolls-Royce was most beautiful (excuse my poor english, I'm Italian hobbyist designer)
That is one gorgeous looking Rolls Royce. With the way you have looked after it the next owner is going to get a prestige vehicle with no legacy issues to fettle. Good luck with the sale from Perth Au.
See Part 8!
Glad you enjoyed the car . Enjoyed watching your ownership experience
Thank You.
The blue livery is sensational.
Thought so myself.
@@rowebbroadking7237 Looking through second hand RR adverts there are a lot of colour options. A lot more than in the stock of comparably aged Bentleys.
I used to own a 1976 silver shadow 😊 these cars need to be used every week. I used mine to just to go to the golf ⛳ club 4 times a week. Kept it ticking over nicely 😊Good luck 🤞 with your next adventure 😊
Yes I agree. Just need to get rid of my Morgan!
I'm glad you lived your dream with this Silver Shadow. The first Rolls-Royce I ever sat in was a 1974 model in this SAME colour! I still can't forget the smell of the leather... Hoping you enjoy more journeys in the future!
Yes, great experience!
Hello, Thanks for the upload! So sorry to hear that you sold the lovely blue RR! Could you possibly recommend a reasonably priced, and reliable Ro-Ro shipping company for cars. (Roll on roll off service from Southampton? I would be very grateful. I‘m located in California and am considering Exporting a Shadow from the UK. Thanks and regards, Axel
I never got involved into looking about exporting. Good luck on your search!
I installed a car lift and my last service cost 300 euros for the engineer and 200 or so for the Flying Spares service package. I have an 88 Silver Spirit. The cars are very basic but lovely and should not cost a fortune to own.
My son who lives in Beverly Hills has a 1973 Silver Shadow in Caribbean Blue. It is in pristine condition but presents occasionally, with a few problems. He is an absolutely devoted to its upkeep and cannot bear the thought of losing it. His beautiful Rosemary Rolls Royce will be repaired , returned and remain a legend forever.
Excellent!
35k is top end for a shadow 2 Id expect one of the very best for that price. Love the colour!
Probably about correct on that price. Maybe higher if you go for a bare metal respray and a well looked after low mileage engine compartment. Yes, sometimes I think the Shadows can look rather bland in their usual blacks, silvers and browns. I suppose it's all down to personal taste. The colour of this one however usually draws very favourable comments.
Are they car tents got special gas inside or dehumidified or is it just to keep dust off, and how mach are they?
Only air! I've had it for 3 winters now and can only recommend it. Can't remember the exact cost but probably around £500.
Yes i know this is a beautifully made Rolls_Royce car 🚙. But you have to remember, these Silver Shadows are now over 40 years old !. The last ones coming off the production line in 1980. So there is always going to be on going issues with there reliability. It will always come down to how much time and money 💵 you are prepared to spend on any car , to keep it on the road ?.
Yes I totally agree. Part 8 (due out in the next few days) discusses this very point along with another interesting article from The Times newspaper.
Just found the channel i had a shadow 2 from new in 1979 loved every second of ownership did crazy miles in 4 years of owning around 130 k sold now retired thinking as a classic am definatley looking at ghost motors sevenoaks cheers for heads up
What was the reg?
Good luck in your search.
I would definitively keep it ! What are your tires pls ?
Avon tyres all round. Time for a change!
How much are you looking to get or the Rolls Royce if I may ask.
Watch Parts 7 & 8 due out in the next week or so.
Good choice of Morgan! Join the club, plenty of events to go to and enjoy fun with other owners. Plus cheaper to run than your Rolls.
It is Peter but unfortunately it's not a car for me I'm afraid.
A majestic , legendary car whose resplendent beauty and comfort will never fade. My son has a 1973 model in Caribbean blue. He’s from Leyland in Lancashire and lives in Beverly Hills.

Thanks for your comments. Not sure if my horses would be happy if I nicked their straw for the Shadow!
It is possible to remove the battery with the car running back it into the tent put some nice wood block props for the car to squat on when the Hydraulics bleed down and a pair in the front raise it up to prevent the tires from Flat spotting then we switch off the motor you'll not be able to restart it until you carry a battery back to it and put it back in the car. That will prevent it from being stolen or anything going wrong with that battery. My two Silver Shadows both 1973 cars in America I fitted with Harvey Bailey engineering suspensions that truly made the difference in the car and the stainless exhaust with no Pollution Control. I do miss them I sold my two Shadows due to the high maintenance costs. In America a Rolls-Royce cost twice as much to maintain as it does in Britain. So I had the resort to almost a dozen American Cars 3 Chevrolets and 9 Cadillacs to replace my Shadows with. But I did Keep My Silver Spirit. That's a beautiful color on yours The Blue is very nice I had a white and a gray shadow both 1973's one early one late. They were not the colors I wanted. But I sold them to let someone else support them and took a humongous loss. The American cars can sit for a decade and are easy to recommission.
Thanks for the info. You are the second person from 'across the pond' who has highlighted the high costs of maintaining the car over there. Probably the opposite applies when we try and look after some of the 50's/60's American classics.
My son , from Leyland in Lancashire UK, lives in Beverly Hills. He owns a magnificent Caribbean Blue , 1973 Silver Shadow which is his pride and joy. His car is placed into storage every winter in secure controlled premises. He is loathe to get it wet or leave it anywhere where he cannot see it. He treats her with the greatest respect and consideration because she is loved. Her name is Rosemary Rolls Royce. A legend on wheels.
I concur with that!
Great Video... for a great car... do you have to keep putting fresh air into the chamber from time to time?
The air is continuously circulated as there are vents in the bubble so the air is constantly changing.
More update please - one of the best RR SS II I have seen for a long time. Greetings from a German RR addict.
More to come!
Hi Rowebb are you planning on using the car this year? Would love another update! Great content 👍
A couple of new videos should be out in the next few weeks to keep you updated.
Lovely looking motor you should definitely do a couple of weddings it would look the part on any wedding day
Yes, I've done a couple for the family during ownership.
Where is this vehicle up for sale
Autotrader UK
Thoroughly enjoying your videos, very much appreciated. Watching Harry’s Garage sparked my interest in Shadows, I’m just at the start of my journey researching into buying one so your films have been very informative. Coming from the same neck of the woods as you, and having a couple of older cars, you’re doing exactly the right thing not using them over the winter. Anyone advising otherwise clearly doesn’t appreciate the environment we live in. Thanks again, and please continue with the blogs.
Thanks for that Calum. I get a lot of comments on not having it parked up for periods but you are very much of the same mind. It's so bad with both salt spray and the potholes here that it remains in the bubble until March. Don't get me wrong I do turn the engine over every few weeks and rotate the tyres so it's not as if it gets ignored! I've seen Harry's garage and he did take on a bit of a project there. Give him his due it performed exceptionally well over his arctic circle adventure. Good luck in the search!
Bob, thank you for sharing the journey of you and the Rolls Royce with us. One of the videos appeared in my feed (who knows why - maybe the YT algorithm has pigeon-holed me as discerning) and I just had to watch all of the RR series. I love your understated style and appreciate the dry sense of humour too. There are some things you just have to get out of your system and as a car lover this must be on the list of many of a certain age. Best of luck in all that you do, and that at least you get to do some memorable road trips in the Rolls before you part company. PS: I have just checked your AT advert - I think you are setting a low bar, there are buyers, not many, but three will come along all together like the proverbial double decker busses.😉
Thanks for the comments. Yes very surprised the advert has not led to a sale yet. It's a specialised market. Not many under 30's probably appreciate the car. I'll wait however. Have had a few enquiries but nothing concrete. Maybe that dry sense of humour is putting people off!
beautiful rr you purchased the right model and year! drive the hell out of it!! you only live once!!
I'm trying!
You're in a country where you can get the car fixed by professional mechanics if you're in America by the time you get a professional mechanic who can fix it they rob you blind. I had to sell my two Silver Shadows that's right two of them and kept my third Rolls-Royce to Silver Spirit and it's been sitting for 12 years because of the Year 2008 that nearly put me in the poor house acting actually it did but I managed to keep the car. I replaced it with a dozen other American cars that I can get parts for and I can repair myself. But if you live in England have a Rolls Royce it's so easy to get them service and repaired got competitive rates unlike once you step off the British into another country.
Much as I love the old 50/60's American classics, that's exactly the same reason I wouldn't consider one here.
That accent 😊
Yea, I've had quite a few comments on that! Must talk s l o w e r!
Hi beautiful car! Who helped you buy it please? You said a rolls royce mechanic?
Mike Scott, Scotts RR & Bentley Specialists, Hayling Island, Hants. Lovely guy!
@rowebbroadking7237 thank you for your reply, may speak to him then.
Very smart Shadow, enjoy your car.
Thank You.
I think the 'Shadows' had a very long production by RR, with the 6.75 litre V8 engine coupled to the GM 3 speed 'Hydramatic' transmission also fitted to many GM vehicles in the USA, and luxury GM in Australia. From what you are presenting, it would be clear that at this time, your Shadow would be at its peak in motoring value. Only minor faults have been seen, and I would say much to do with how they are driven. In Australia I have a Toyota Camry which gets used every day, and has done 320,000km, where at the 200,000km point, timing belt, oil seals, coolant pump, radiator were replaced at about the value of the car ($A2,500.00). Since then, only minor work necessary...
Happy to see that you decided to keep the old girl, use her as much as you can and continue to enjoy her.
I'll probably look to sell her in the Spring so that I can move on to another project. It's been great fun and a very worthwhile experience. I hope it gives some the confidence to track a good one down and buy it.
Isn't a B plate newer than the age of the car
It was and that 's why I didn't put it on the car.
Nothing smells like a roller. I've only been in a few for a ride (of various vintages) but my family has had a load of vaguely functioning classic cars of a much lesser brand over the years and they just smell like old plastic. Except for old Rovers. They smell like a roller but different. It's probably the leather they use. I have no proof of that.
Thanks for sharing!
I concur on the sniff test!
