Would there be space in Irelands Hidden Heartlands tourism plans to target tourist who are researching family history? My ancestors were from Mullingar, Westmeath, Longford (and other counties) and the goal is to come to Ireland to see where my families lived. But part of that is seeing the more traditional homes, farms, barracks, etc. - the old… the actual history and not just modern tourism. A snapshot of Ireland as our ancestors would have seen it. I want to walk from Forgney across the bridge to Moyvore…. Want to go to Mullingar and see where my 2x great grandfather signed the paperwork as a soldier in the Crimea war, the athlone barracks where he was pensioned. The church he was baptised in. Even the graveyards where family lay at rest. The history specific to a decade in the 1800s…. So we can understand the Insurrection Act of 1824, the amendment of 1831… the famine, schooling when it became accessible to all, the properties of landlords like mitten who was attacked with the men sent as convicts to Australia in 1831….or Strokestown to see where Dennis Mahon lived and died after sending tenants to America. Even to understand the famine more and how the impact was different in different counties. But also see other historical sites. Regardless of how our ancestors immigrated - as pensioned military, convicts or tenant farmers whose immigration was paid for by a landlord, the purpose of our visit is to connect to our ancestors and understand our own history. It’s the connection to a location, we want to see where and how they lived, even when their home no longer exists…. walking in a traditional home helps us understand them. Walking the ground they walked on and visiting locations - their last address in Ireland…. Is significant because that is all we have….a location because the loss of records means we can’t build up our families stories more than the family history handed down.
