Beautiful Borders for Tablet Weaving
In this video, I'll be going over how to get nice, even borders and how you can hide your weft so as not to be visible from the right side of the band.
Using a technique found in the book The Techniques of Tablet Weaving by Peter Collingwood will allow you to get the best borders you can.
Unfortunately the pattern page has an error and no longer shows up.

Swivles for Tablet Weaving: Barrel vs Ball Bearing
Просмотров 10 тыс.6 лет назад
In this video, I show you the difference between barrel swivels and ball bearing swivels and how that affects relieving twist while tablet weaving. The ball bearing swivels I got on Amazon and are size 1. I would go larger if you can as they just bearly are big enough for me to get a size 5 crochet hook through. They were $8.99 us for a pack of 25 www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MTPDG2L/ref=oh_aui...
Perfect Tablet Weaving Tension EVERYTIME!
Просмотров 22 тыс.6 лет назад
How to relieve twist and maintain tension using an inkle loom while tablet weaving. If you are having a problem dealing with twist on an on an inkle or peg loom then this should help. It will allow you to remove the twist using fishings swivels and retention your warp using a taunt-line hitch. I'm using barrel swivels size, I think as it's been years since I bought them, size #4 or 25mm. You ca...
Genius! Thank you!
Thank you thank you thank you!!! The issue with the border card warp stretching out and becoming more slack than the rest of the pattern when I use swivels to unwind it has been driving me nuts!
The download page for GTT is no longer working. If anyone has the zip file, shoot me a message please
If you go to the download page there is a link for a mirror site. This is where the download that works is.
@@scp0906 got it ! GTT restored.
Dziękuję ❤
Great ideas. Thank you!!
Thank You! This was an amazing tutorial!
I always watch this video every time I weave, just to refresh my memory & make sure I'm tying them correctly. You're an absolute genius!!! I know NOTHING about knots & I never would have thought of this in a million years! Thank you so much for sharing this
I’ve wanted to try out card weaving and I’ve been researching so much for days now, and I wanted to thank you for sharing your expertise in such a simple and straight forward manner! It still seems very daunting, but you’ve eased my mind about trying it out! 🤗
So smart! Thank you for sharing!
When i click a card spot its making the whole row turn that color instead of the individual spots?
It sounds like you don't have any turns of the cards set. If one card is showing all the same color then it hasn't been 'turned' and you're seeing just one holes worth of color.
I know this is 3 years old now but the pattern link no longer works. says it can't open because it contains errors.
The author is no longer maintaining their website so unfortunately the link is broken
that's a shame. hope someone can track down (or recreate) the draft.
Thanks a lot for this explanation. It is a simple GTT pattern but yet you showed all the details. I have been doing very easy patterns, up to now, where all the cards move 4 times forward and then backwards. I can start beautiful chevrons now.
Hi! How would you start off with swivels if I wanted to only rotate my cards upwards through a pattern?
If you only wanted to turn in one direction you would still attach the swivels the same and just remove the twist more often
Great instructions and super great idea! So is there a reason that you're doing four cards per key ring?
No real reason other than keeping the amount of key rings to a minimum.
This is so helpful, thank you!!
thank you very much for the demo, you explain it well, thank you for sharing. It's a bit difficult when I have to weave the pattern backwards, because then I have to flip the bordertablets and then weave them foreward, because the weft shows if I weave the border tablet backwards.
I know that this video was posted at least four years ago, but, I just came across it. I bought a new Schacht inkle loom recently and I would like to use your keyring-and-swivel method of eliminating twist. However, I am concerned about the metal damaging the pegs of my new loom. Has this been something that you have experienced? Anyone? I am ready to warp my loom. Should I only use swivels?
This reply is 4 months after this question, just to keep the timeline intact. I also use a Schact inkle loom, and when I do card weaving it is very easy to advance the warp so that the swivels and keyrings (I actually use jewelry clasps so I can also unclip each card if needed) are never actually in contact with the pegs. Advance the whole warp until just before the metal gets to the peg, weave as much as you can, and make sure you don't advance the warp again until you are able to pass the metal bits past the peg and still have your next pick in the working area. It takes some practice, and with the Schact style inkle looms having their tensioner placed so that the working area shrinks as you weave, it sometimes gets really frustrating. I have ripped cards while turning because I didn't keep my swivels lined up when I started, so I had a much longer area I didn't want on a peg, which dramatically shortened the working area as well. Band weaving is cool, tablets are cool, go do some weaving.
I just started tablet weaving on an inkle loom and this is a fantastic idea! Going to have to go buy swivels and key rings now before I warp up for my next project; it's an all forward pattern, so I know the twist will get unbearable.
Excellent explanatory video. I was able to adapt the technique to an Inkle band that I am weaving. I didn’t need to worry about twist so didn’t use key ring or swivel. I needed to add a length of fine silk thread to one of my warp threads that was in the middle of the warp. I created a loop in the side near the beginning of the weaving and created the knot with the other end of that warp thread. I was a bit worried that the slippery thread would not hold firm, but I was able to get the Correct tension and it is holding steady! Thank you. Peace. D Taylor, DVM
4 tries on a band i can't figure it out i don't have a computer so no mobile app i like weaving this way but very frustrating the way patterns are done thanks for the video very helpful
what sort of knot do you use to tie the front of the warp to the key rings?
It's just a square knot
I see that you made your own cards. What is its actual size of it? As I see you used formica-(laminate). Looks good!
I would like to know where I can get this great software? Thank you
You just totally saved my butt. THANK YOU!
Thank you for this! I've got my inkle loom warped up like this and so far it's working great!
I'm going to have to watch this at least several times because there are cards that are missing letters and that is confusing. Also a 'front', 'back' designation of the cards would be nice with the appropriate number of the gtt column written on the front of the card (and the letters), and this could help the viewer understand what the 'S' and 'Z' position looked like for the gtt column. Barring those items, I might be able to learn the gtt method from this video. Thanks for posting it.
I may just be sleepy, but how is the yarn/thread going to untwist when you've got them tied up like that?
That's what the swivels are for. They release the tension.
@@KnowKnots yes. But it seemed the knots are on the wrong side... unless the group of 4 always turn the same direction. I'll watch again.
@@KnowKnots ok. One could tie each yarn. that'll work.
I'm just stumbling onto card weaving and want to try some patterns. Can someone tell me what the red line means in the pattern? The ones I've found on Pinterest have the GTT pattern and some have a red line that divides up the pattern and I have no idea what that means.
The line is where the pattern repeats and starts over at the beginning.
Love this video. Will use this technique on my next band
This is AWESOME! So super helpful! Thank you so much for sharing this 👍🙏😁
A good tactic, though I believe that the knot is a tautline hitch, rather than a hotline...
Nice! Another way to do this is a Finnish method called tuppilo selvage, where you lift all the warp threads of the edge tablets (two or more tablets) on the first side the shuttle passes through from each side. Demonstrated here: ruclips.net/video/xErcVPs_L6Y/видео.html
Thanks for this demo! I was struggling to figure out how to make neater looking edges, without having to use the same yarns for the weave! Perfect!
Thanks for the demo. This helps solve my problem especially when turning cards only one direction, such a tangled mess. The key ring is a great idea too. When I used to fix one trusted line it loosened the lines and sometimes messed up the neighboring lines. Excellent explanation!!
Your Informations are really helpfull, thank you 😘🤗
Thank you for showing this so clearly. I have these swivels on order and was wondering exactly how to use them best. Brilliant!
I don’t really understand how to read the order of the turns. I thought I did, but I guess I don’t. 🤔
The pattern in the thumbnail is stunning! Is it an original? Would you be willing to share it?
Thank you! The pattern actually comes from Claudia Wollny's book Tablets at Work.
Excess twist is quite a nuisance and this seems like a great idea. I am wondering how you prevent a snarled mess from happening with the long ends of the adjustable knot? As the twist builds up and the threads turn so will the long ends. Also wondering if you find the knots slip and loosen as you work? Maybe I am not making the knot tight enough.
Yes, snarls can happen but I try and make the tails as short as possible or cut off excess to reduce tangles. As for the knot slipping, if you tie it tight enough I don't find it slips. The friction of the threads is usually enough to keep it from loosening.
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Great idea. I would refer to the thread as the bottom forward not back. Back is usually towards the weaver.
It's a shame that the Spanish translation doesn't appear
it's alpinist's Prussik knot.
Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!! This has helped SO much!!
Glad it helped!
awesome, thank you for this
Glad you liked it!
What is the pattern in the thumbnail? It’s beautiful!
This is from Claudia Wollny's book, Tablets at Work
So nice of you to share this.. I am an newbie and an enthusiast in tablet weaving.. this is a very helpful post. Thanks so much 💐
Glad it was helpful!
This is Janet. How are you doing? You have the best information that I have found on GTT so far. Hope all is well and you make more videos.
I was SO frustrated with the twist on a pattern I’m weaving - I’m a new weaver, and couldn’t figure out how to get the warp untwisted so I could weave. I ran across this video, and I have to tell you - you are a GENIUS. I bought a pack of ball-bearing swivels and installed them and VOILA! It works! Thank you so much for posting this video. I truly appreciate learning this technique to keep me from major stressing!
You are so welcome!
Very useful!
