He knows it’s a painful memory and looks over towards him as if to say “how do I play this one Matty?” Matt graciously says “it was a long time ago” and Gary moves on. I think that was standard for them. I remember them being really horrible to Lofty and Wicksy all those years ago, when they used to run the Queen Vic.
Standard practice for those two to treat their drivers poorly; yes Mansell was demanding, but the reason he was demanding is he wanted to win, and to do that Williams needed to improve. If the cars had anything like the reliability that Ferrari gave Michael or Mercedes give Lewis then Mansell would have won many many more races.
If he’d hit the wall in ‘87 the race would’ve been red flagged, he’d have won the championship and his stock would’ve risen immeasurably.
