The Black Mare of Fanad
A couple of tunes with the very excellent and not at all difficult, Eoin Orr from Letterkenny, Donegal and another great musician I know from the sessions in Tubbercurry.
The set starts with the Donegal reel, "The Black Mare of Fanad". Other folk may also know it as "The Nine Points of Roguery". Fanad is a beautiful spot on the north coast of Donegal with a very photogenic lighthouse and, if you hang on to the end of the video, I have added a photo I took at that very spot. No mares in sight though.

Here are a couple of jigs with the fantastic, Sinéad Nic Cionnaith. I first got to know Sinéad and most of the McKenna clan at the festival in Tubbercurry each July. Just like Jimmy McHugh who wrote the first tune of the last video I posted, the McKennas are from County Tyrone although lets not hold that against them. It can't be helped and they are all brilliant musicians and the best of peopl...

It is always a joy to get some tunes with Johnny Canning and Roisin Anne Hughes, who have both featured in this tune series previously. It is a bit of an over-imaginative set title, entirely on my part, but it does have a reason, I promise! This set starts off with a great jig from Jimmy McHugh. For those who don't know of Jimmy, he was a fiddle player, originally from Tyrone but who spent most...

Reunited with my brilliant Ennis Trad Festival friends, Megan, Rebecca and Aisling for a set of tunes, this time led off by Megan. Fresh from her appearance on Sruth on BBC ALBA and TG4, this seemed like a great chance to highlight some brilliant Donegal fiddling with this set. As you will note though, if you stick to the very end of the video, Rebecca and Aisling had other ideas! 😂 Do check ou...

Another of the early lockdown videos, this time with Robin Beech, a great friend and concertina player from Montreal who lived here in Glasgow for a while, all of maybe 15 years ago. Questionable video recording and shaky guitar playing from me but this past year has very much been a learning process and I have been enjoying working on these videos and hopefully improving in the playing and rec...

Another of the earlier video in this series, this time with a brilliant whistle player from Bellaghy, County Derry, Nuala McGuckin. Nuala is another of the great musicians that I got to play with regularly in the session in the Speedwell Bar in Dundee. It is a long time since we have seen each other and it was great to get a tune again.

A set of tunes with the very talented, Tomofumi Inoue from Osaka, Japan. Tomo spent a time living in Ireland and playing the fiddle and I met him 11 years ago at the South Sligo SummerSchool in Tubbercurry, where I have met so many of the musicians that have joined me in this video series. It really is a brilliant festival.

A set of tunes with the brilliant Brian MacAodha on uilleann pipes. I have been wanting to do a set with pipes for ages and Brian really is one of the best. Originally from Dublin but now living in Cork, I first met Brian at the Ennis Trad Fest (I think) and have enjoyed meeting up with him at festivals around Ireland when the opportunity presents itself. There aren't a whole lot of chords in t...

The last sets of tunes with Tommaso and Declan were so much fun that we couldn't resist doing another one with the three of us. Lockdown is tough but it is eased by getting to play music with such excellent musicians! A couple of classic reels, the first one written by Charlie Lennon and named for his hometown of Kiltyclogher in County Leitrim.

Back to the tunes and back with the great, Patrick Howard from Leeds on box, this time joined with former All-Ireland fiddle champ and long time session pal, Johnny Canning. Johnny is one of the (semi) regular session hosts in our weekly Ivory Hotel Session back when we had such things and when his doctoring and family commitments allowed. Three jigs for you this time and they all seem to go by...

A set of tunes with two of Bavaria's finest fiddlers, Barbara Hintermeier and Sabine Pichler. This was such a fun set to play and I love the interplay between the fiddles. Definitely sounds best with headphones. 🙂 The set starts with Paul Cranford's 'Union Street Session', followed by 'Farewell to London' by the great, and sadly recently lost, Brendan McGlinchey and finishing with a tune called...

A set of tunes with the brilliant, Declan Folan. I knew Declan's fiddle playing before I ever met him from the fantastic 'Skin and Bow' album he put out with Junior Davey. Getting to know him over the years through the South Sligo SummerSchool in Tubbercurry, you could not meet a more welcoming musician, teaching fiddle through the week and organising all the sessions in Murphy's Hotel. Declan ...

A video with a great friend I have not seen in a long time, Christina Smith, despite living in the same city. It has been great catching up with Christina and getting a tune. There are four tunes in this set, starting with a couple of Donegal Highlands, followed by a great tune by Jennifer Wrigley and finishing with a reel that we just don't have a name for. Should you know, please do let me kn...

Another of the earlier videos, this time with the brilliant, Fionnlagh Ballantine. Fionnlagh and I met in The Tuesday Night Session in The Speedwell Bar in Dundee a good few years ago now and every week, Fionnlagh would come to the session with more new tunes. It was a great place to play. This set starts with a jig, 'The Tailor's Thimble', followed by two reels, 'The Spinning Wheel' and 'The G...

I have been doing these videos over the course of the lockdown, initially just posting them up on Facebook. This is one of the earlier videos (as you may be able to tell from the lower production values...), this time with the fabulous Ledia Doci. Ledia is a musician who I first met in the session scene in Dundee, although she originally learned her fiddling right here in Glasgow through a RSAM...
Good job on this, all of you guys! :) love this song. I also imagine it was a little tricky all remote.

A lovely set!
Hey Alistair, great tunes, what’s the second reel? Nice pace!
Thank you very much. It is called Miss Monaghan. Graham is a great fiddle player and has a new album out that he is launching at Celtic Connections later this month. Well worth seeing if you are nearby.
@@alistaircassidy Hello Alistair, Thanks for the tune name. Of course, if i'd looked harder at the opening credit, i'd have seen it. Doh! Connections is out for me this year, I'm afraid, I'm in Ennis, but I'll listen out for Graham's album.
I’d love to do a set with you if you’re up for it. Either way keep up the great videos!ruclips.net/video/FE3vJCF7uhI/видео.html
Phenomenal!
Great stuff guys! Keep up the great videos!
Lovely tunes, well played
The name of the third reel: "McIllhatton’s Retreat". Composer: Máire O’Keeffe Cheers!
That's brilliant. Thanks!

Lovely Scottish fiddling on Irish tunes
Great tune! Been listening on repeat.
The backing giotár is very cool fosta. What headphones does he use? I am looking for a a pair to make video collaborations :) Sláinte
Thank you very much. I do have a nice pair of DT770s. In most of the videos though, including this one, I am just using a cheap webcam headset. It has a long cable that is running to the laptop playing Declan's video and they don't block out a lot of sound so I can still hear the guitar.
@@alistaircassidy DT770s? Never heard of that model. A cheap headset? Well, I can't complain about too much leakage. The sound is clean quite well 🙂 I am looking for some affordable headphones for collaboration videos like yerself. I looked at some entry priced closed back Pioneer and Sennheiser so far. Cheers 😊 In which tuning you play mostly?
@@Melvorgazh The DT770s are by Beyerdynamic. I play in DADGAD.
@@alistaircassidy Beyerdynamic, I heard it was a great brand. I found a good bargain today for some Sennheiser Momentum 🙂 Pretty good sound ☺️
Waoow! Is the the fidil player of Skin and Bow? Crafty sound about as much as Tommy Peoples 😎👍🏻
Yes it is. Lucky me!
@@alistaircassidy I found his name on The Session website while looking for some more awesome versions of The Ships Are Sailing. His name came up. He's a true master. Have sessions re-opened is Ireland already? Sláinte agat
@@Melvorgazh I am based in Scotland but there aren't many sessions back here yet. Perhaps in some areas where the virus is at its lowest. I am not sure about Ireland but I don't think so.
@@alistaircassidy Ok. And where do you get the best intel in Scotland about that virus? Are there still independent press medias? 🙂
