    There's an arcade machine I want to get that has Pacman, Pacmania, Dig Dug and Galaga built in. I don't have the room 😂 or the cash to cough up to get it, but damn that'd be cool! This is an absolute quality game. The music does sound so much better than the Master System version.

      is it one of those arcade 1up machines? i like the look of those but they seem too expensive for the amount of games you get. Also i've been told they are not really jail-breakable so you can't add your own roms which is a shame.

    Love this game! You're right, the music is awful! But apart from that, it's a pretty good time. I bought the arcade version on PS5, I think the music is a bit better than this. A least the sound is better than Atari Pacman 😂.

    Always preferred Mr Do to DigDug - it has a lot more going on in it. DigDug is pretty dull in comparison. Played MrDO in the arcade but quite a bit using MAME. There's a couple of later games in the series that play quite differently (Do-Run-Run and Mr Do's Wild Ride - I think there is another too) that are worth a look. The cuteified SI game is on Taito Legends if memory serves and is pretty good. Never heard of the rest of these!

    Is this an actual licensed Nintendo cartridge (the maker got permission from Nintendo to make the cart, including getting the required official CIC chip to put in the cart from Nintendo)? And were the games on it properly licensed to the publisher by Data East? Or is it a bootleg game? I know a lot of multcarts are bootlegs, and use illegal CIC chip clones to enable the cart to run on a real SNES. So is this cart like that, or was everything actually done through the proper channels for this specific multicart?

    • @retrospiritsgaiden
      @retrospiritsgaiden 11 дней назад

      I don't think this is licensed by Nintendo there's no Nintendo branding on the Cart or box as far as I remember. However the Data East logo is in there at the start so it looks as if Retro bit officially licenced the games from Data East. It's not a bootleg. My guess is to class it as an unlicensed cartridge in the same way that EA and Codemasters made unlicensed carts on the Megadrive back in the day. Retro bit have made a lot of publisher licensed re-releases of rare and expensive games on the Snes and MD in last few years and some of them are super high quality but none have the Sega or Nintendo logo. this particular game I'd describe cart and box etc as average to good - I think it is one of Retro bits early efforts. The fighters history games are pretty cool.

    Previous 2 vols in this series are a pile of rank nonsense even for me. We need an Arkanoid collection with a paddle controller. That little Taito mini was a good start but there's a high barrier of entry there.

      @retrospiritsgaiden 12 дней назад

      Yeah the Egret 2 is great, but it is very expensive. They just released Volume 3 for it which I will do a review of at some point and it won't be glowing. Taito have lost their way a little on these compilations of late.

    Have the PS2 edition of this. Blur-o-vision , 50Hz only and no TATE option for the vertical games are the chef's kiss. Having said that - love Rolling Thunder - has a very elegant look to it. There's a collection on switch which is just as lazy - Galaga is almost unplayable docked due to lag - even I can feel it.

    • @retrospiritsgaiden
      @retrospiritsgaiden 12 дней назад

      Rolling Thunder does have a very unique style, shame Digital Eclipse didn't feel the need to keep it looking its best. I don't think the 'Cube version of Namco 50 has TATE mode either, I would need to double check that...but this is old school D.E we are talking about so I'd be incredibly surprised if it has TBH. The fact they licensed songs for the front end is unique, and the 3D cabs are fun, but I'd rather they spent the money on emulating the games nicely.

    I think I can explain. I’m no expert, by any means, but I am a fan of this kind of game. I played the crap out of Cybernator (as it was known in the U.S.) when it released, and also loved every second of Metal Warriors. When emulation came along, I found Front Mission Gun Hazard and thought it was just awesome. Later I learned of the connection between Cybernator and Leynos. Now, here’s where things fell apart. I got a Genesis emulator up and running and tried to play Leynos like I would Cybernator, but it just wasn’t having it. I kept running out of ammo. So I quit. Years later I was watching some full playthrough here on RUclips and was reading the description and comments, and I came to realize the mistake I’d made. Leynos was meant to have more strategic play. The limited ammo and various weapon choices are supposed to really make you think, and give you reasons to play through the game multiple times. Cybernator (nee Valken) was made to be more of a straight up action game - an easier entry into the wider world. Leynos 2, as I understand it, is meant to be an expansion of Leynos 1. Same MO, except I think you can get different suits as well as different weapons. Play is meant to be more strategic and less run-and-gun. Again I could be way off, but that’s my understanding. If you watch some good playthroughs by good players, it all kind of makes sense. I actually was hoping this one would release because I got the Valken remake on the Switch and I really like it. I the Leynos 2 remake is on Steam, but I’d rather have both titles on the same hardware. Honestly if you don’t love the whole concept of 2D mech games, I don’t think this title will be very appealing. I mean you have to be the kind of person that buys Gigantic Army and Armored Hunter Gunhound. I hope that helps.

    • @retrospiritsgaiden
      @retrospiritsgaiden 25 дней назад

      hey thats awesome, thanks for taking the time to give an interesting and detailed response:) To be fair i do like robots / mech stuff, i played Valken until i could 1cc it back in the day, but anything that smells a bit sim like, or has lots of menu interaction leaves me completely cold. I bounced off this one hard, and i don't think it's entirely the games fault (although it does have it's fair share of jank.) as soon as i had to start juggling things around and assigning weapons to buttons, i was done. I'm not saying the game is bad, it's just not for me. I would've loved a straight action packed 32bit bells and whistles Valken 2, shame we didn't get one of those.

    1998?! I didn't know it was released so late in the Saturn's life. This should have been made right at the start of the Saturn's release in 1994, along side all the other super scaler Arcade titles and perhaps it would have made a difference in the sales in the West!

    Metal Slug is such a great game series. I don't know why they're making Metal Slug games today anything but a run and gun genre. It's insanity! What is your favorite Metal Slug game? And would you rather play Metal Slug or Gunstar Heroes?

    • @retrospiritsgaiden
      @retrospiritsgaiden Месяц назад

      I like the original Metal Slug the most, it's actually 1CC-able and doesn't overstay it's welcome. 2,X and 3 are pretty damned nice. i've not played 4/5/6 enough to have a strong opinion on them, although i think 5 (pretty sure it was 5...) does have some nice new movement options (slide), and the dual wielding thing like Gunforce 2, so is interesting. I can actually 1CC Gunstar Heroes, because I played it loads back in the day, I was very close to 1CC on Saturn Metal Slug at one point, like fighting the final boss close, but never got over the line. Thats a tough question, MS or GH? GH or MS? It's actually really, really close but I'd probably go for the original MS!

    Totally agree about the shitty graphics it looks very similar to Rastan Saga 2 but without the colours. I think this was a 90's phenomenon of graphics downgrades as Atari Games went from the glorius art of 720, APB and Toobin to the stomach churning thunder jaws. I'm still battling away on viper phase 1 so i'd like to see your thoughts on that one. Personally, i can't get any further than level 3 even though i've sunk 20 hours + into it.

    • @retrospiritsgaiden
      @retrospiritsgaiden Месяц назад

      thinking about the evolution of games in the 70's and 80's, they started black and white, then we got colour, so i think companies went colour mad and made everything super saturated. by the time the 90's rolled around to make your game stand out you had to do something else, i think that's why we got digitised sprites and grim colour choices - it was different to what came before (but not as nice!) when we got actual textured 3d arcade games it sort of did the same thing - Daytona and Ridge Racer were super saturated, then things got a more muted palette as the decade went on. Sega definitely kept the vibrant look where it could (Dreamcast had some super colourful games) but thats not the direction the mainstream went in. It's nice to see the resurgence of colour in games through indie titles in the last few years.

    A brilliant game and even now the intro and set pieces still give me goosebumps. I agree with you that it is distinctly Treasure but after seeing gradius 3 and 4 it was clear that Konami were unable to bring new life to the franchise. Unfortunately, i think that the pandering to bullet hell shoot em up experts killed the genre for most. However, with a bit of practice a normal person can finish the first loop on easy difficulty setting. Another shoot em up that oozes the coolness factor of Gradius V is Under Defeat by G.rev .It has recently had a re-release which includes new modes and DLC on the switch and ps4 and is available from Amazon Japan for £20. The UK release of it has been delayed but it's all in English anyway.

    • @retrospiritsgaiden

      Treasure definitely gave Gradius a needed kick up the rear with an injection of energy, the game still looks great, sounds great, and is smooth as butter to play. I did own Under Defeat on the DC when it first came out (but reasons meant i had to sell it....) it is a very cool game. I do still have the Xbox 360 release that came out a few years later - also cool. Great shout - it's definitely worth picking up if they ported it well.
