i spend the first round desperately remembering the controls, then it clicks. What a cool game Virtual On for the Saturn is! Sure, It's a shame that it works best with the incredibly expensive and rare-ish twinstick, but the joypad does work well enough to have fun. 10 minutes or so of a rock hard shooter by Kaneko and / or Hudson soft. Atypical amounts of parallax scroll for a PCE game in this one, loads of sprites flying around. Here I have a couple of goes at it here, the first one is tentative, I tried to take it slow and steady, but that technique really didn't get me results. the Second time I just went for it and threw caution to the wind. The texture map changes are very interesting, especially on the landscape and parks on stage one. It doesn't look like something that would be done to save on poly's but almost artistic modifications. Just very fascinating.
yeah i agree it's a bit odd. they upped the contrast and saturation on some textures as well, which is an artistic choice someone made, but i think this didn't turn out as nice as they imagined!
Finally playing this series thanks to SteamDeck emulation. Its blowing my mind. I just started Saga now, I have super high expectations. what are you playin it on?
SEGA wins. As usual. Yawn.
So much better than the original.. which i loved aswell.
i think i prefer the music in the first game, but love both of them. The original Panzer Dragoon is the game that made me choose to buy a Saturn over the Playstation back in 1995!
Ps2 blew the dream away i think the cast look like a better design model
You should back up the save file ; just in case.
good idea:) i can definitely do that on the retrofreak console.
stage 1 boss strange music? Only USA version?
i don't know if the US version has a different soundtrack, both of these are japanese releases.
Pretty uninspiring looking but solid enough implementation. Pity about the game area size - looks like 1P mode in a 2P mode game a la SNES Mario Kart.
i have seen that this game is available on mulitiple formats so there must be something to it for F1 fans?
Does it possible to download this “English” version of the game? I was searching for the English patch for the original Japanese version, but the translation is not really good to me though. Thanks a lot!
hey - i have no idea if you can get this as a download (i don't download roms i only use stuff i have paid for). However If you can download it i imagine someone has maybe put it on archive.org - ?
@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 I have seen another video which has the patch of English. I didn’t own any of it but only download the Japanese one and tried to play patch it with English, but it didn’t work for me yet.
@@CubeHsiao sorry i can't help :( it's a pretty nice game.
@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 It’s okay! And thanks for your help anyway. It’s a very pretty game with pretty character’s! I used to play it in my childhood, but can never beat it for the reason of time(You have spend more time on your study and your parents…….In Taiwan………..)
The wonder boy follow-up that disappointed teenage girls in arcades across the country.
yeah but i liked it! would always stick a coin in this one, as i remember it, it was a fairly easy arcade game so got plenty of playtime for 10p!
@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 well if you liked it that is obviously more important😀.
@@MrDirkles I'm all me me me.😄
Neat I find that quite fascinating You never see comparisons like this much.
it is a bit of a random old game! :)
I just got dreamcast collection xbox 360 game for christmas in 2012.
I avoided Xevious in the arcade. By the time I saw it there were more attractive games and it came across just as another shooter. But when you actually play it, it has a certain something that keeps you playing even though it's tough and extremely unforgiving. The version I've spent most time on is Xevous 3d/g+ on PS1 which has original Xevious on the disc accompanied by Super and Arrange with TATE option. As expected of the PCE this port looks very good - superior looking to the NES port which is pretty good to play.
tallies with my experience with this game, ignored in the arcade, love this version!
PS2 dientes de sierra, Dreamcast era increible 😍 SEGA no se que paso😥
🤯🤯🤯 Amazing Sega Dreamcast
Interestingly i bought a used pal megadrive off of Ebay a few years back and they also included the very same game but i was lucky to get the English version. I still didn't have any idea what was going on. This game provides as much enjoyment as trying to find your keys after your other half has hidden them in the garden.
haha - yeah i had heard this game is a bit dull and double hard, although i remember lots of favourable reviews in magazines. I suppose playing as a dolphin is a novelty though and that's why people loved it back in the day?
@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 People were much more easily pleased then. My friend loved Ecco the dolphin and repeatedly phoned into work sick so he could stay at home and play it and before you ask, no he didn't get sick pay.
Dreamcast looks like HDR compared to ps2
The ps2 graphics look good for the sandy level
@@ConnorlUvz some of the environments on the Ps2 have extra details which is a nice thing to have
If you hold the sonar down it will ping back and show you a map
that is handy!
Ps1
Dreamcast wins
RUclips cut the off the end of my video! oh well! Ta-ra!
This game's biggest problem is that it's the sequel to the best pre-bullet hell style 2D shmup ever made. The change of graphical style ad perspective while "In" at the time hasn't aged the best. But - I got the Layer Section collection for Switch by M2 and the gritty poly view can grow on one over time.
the first Layer Section is pretty damned special.
BIRMINGHAM!
I do prefer these videos with your incoherent ramblings 🙂
haha thanks:) got some more coming that are at least 10% more rambley and incoherent!
Is this version of Weezer for the Sega Megadrive or the SNES? 😂 In all seriousness, that's pretty awesome you got to go to a Weezer concert!
Haha! they are so powerful it takes a Neo Geo to run Weezer!
The engine never stop to surprise me, another example of technical quality and a very smooth graphics.
agreed! nice game:)
Comment PART 2 if the SEGA SATURN survived we could had a 6 button with 4 shoulder buttons controller it real help at games like MK3 or MKT
2 versions of RAYSTORM US and EU i find the EU is better of RAYSTORM PLAYSTATION 1 ,,,NTSC,,, PAL
Great game, very nice conversion. Supreme soundtrack👍
all true:)
The sound of this version is just horrible good thing i got remastered edition
i quite like the music in this version TBH
@retrospiritsgaiden2643 the music is fine its the voice and sound that's horrible
@@damin9913 yeah those samples suck!
@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 the remastered edition fixed all that
The could of done the transparencies like in Guardian Heroes on the Saturn.
from memory, that transparency technique cause issues with polygons and/or sprites behind the transparency getting clipped (it only works over background layers) so i think that would've been bad for gameplay purposes
The only real concern with collections like this (other than whether you like the games) is potential input lag from emulation - did you detect anything or do all the games feel responsive?
some retro compilation have horrendous control lag - the Namco collection's Galaga is pretty much unplayable when docked.
the games felt OK to be honest. X multiply i actually found easier than the Saturn version (maybe region or dip switch related though) it didn't feel laggy to me, but i think i have a very high tolerance for lag (i find it difficult to notice unless its really bad). The arcade version of Image fight i find difficult and this one is no different but i don't think it was lag that got me, more a skill issue:)
@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 Glad to hear, thanks
Tired of paltry compilations now to be honest. Taito Legends and Capcom Generations showed the way. Either go full on M2 high end on 1 or 2 games or go trolley dash and chuck loads in.
apparently there will be 5 volumes of this at £20 + a pop. If it were a company other than Irem i wouldn't bother, and it took me a while to decide to get this one. All the games they are releasing could easily fit on one cart. I'm definitely a sucker for this stuff.
Lol I used to order a lot of games from importers back in the 90s/00s (both over the phone via magazine ads and online) and never received any free tat. Which store gave this away may I ask?
free stuff doesn't happen so much these days, but my main go to importers here in the UK were videogameimports.com and Genkivideogames.com - both are still going. I'm not sure which one of these sent me GO! GO!, but i have had a copy of Saturn Vitual On from each of them!
@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 I have used both of those importers!👌🏻I used to have some nice chats on the phone with a nice chap at videogameimports, think his name was Lee. Used that place a lot back in the day🤘🏻
yeah thats right, it is Lee at VGI, over the years i've bought a lot of stuff from there (most of my super famicom games come from that store). These days i buy a lot of switch stuff from Genki:)
@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 Cool. I’ve bought tons of stuff off VGI, mainly Saturn. Genki is cool, too. I’m getting my Japanese Switch Radiant Silvergun off them soon.
Splendid looking port - at least as good looking as the Megadrive effort.
Great conversion, a very decent game👍
agreed!
480p vs 480i
True!
the big explosions in this game are nicely animated. what a wonderful little machine the PC Engine is!
No more agree, and so underrated. It's on my top 5 on of the most interesting console ever.
I own it on Jaguar, terrific game which is an absolute blast in co-op.
i've seen that version on youtube, it looks a pretty decent game unfortunately i never owned a Jag (if i did i would've bought raiden for it!). IDK how accurate the Jag version is to the coin op, but it still looks like fun time.
I bet you only think Legend of Kage is bad just because of the AVGN. 😒
I didn't like the game, I have no idea if it's well regarded or not (i'd never played it before this device) - sounds like you like it though? thats cool. theres loads of games i like that others don't and thats fine, it's just opinion not fact. what do you like about it?
@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 The exploration and the fun jumping and various other things.
ahh groovy. i like exploration in games too. It's been so long since i played Legend of Kage to remember the set up of the game. i may give it another go if theres exploring to do:)
Sonny Bono'd at 3:27 😂
haha!
Quite an impressive conversion that i think would have been described as "arcade perfect" back in the day :).
i think this would've blown minds back in the day for sure
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And Love Dod Games !
awesome! thanks!
People say Saturn has no transparencies, however those grids are designed for CRTs which blur them to make transparent textures thus saving resources. The PlayStation also does this with texture/colour depth and dithering in many games. It's best played on a CRT for these two systems if you wish to see their full potential.
The dither pattern on Playstation games is very visible on emulation, like you say on CRT not so much. i've always played my Saturn through RGB scart so i'm pretty used to seeing the net effect transparency even on CRT.
Actually that's only true if you use composite cables. Unlike Japan and US, both PS1 and Saturn back then came with RGB scart cables in Europe and Australia mainly to avoid standard mess (PAL/SECAM) that's why most people didn't see the blended dither pattern on the Saturn on their TVs back then.
@@MNaka-uf9yz yep this is true. the dither pattern i'm talking about on Psone is some weird shading thing i think, you see it most visibly in 2D games (but still visible in 3d) as a diamond-ish shaped pattern on any flat colours its very odd, but the Dreamcast also has it in a couple of games (Last Blade 2 for example) i'm guessing any connection up to s-video blends it all away. The transparency dither on Saturn was still noticeable with standard RF cables from hazy memory of 1995 playing Panzer Dragoon, it had an unusually clean RF signal compared to the previous gen stuff.
@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 I used the Saturn with an S-Video cable back when it was released and could clearly see the fake transparencies. I think it was more so composite and RF that the effect was more hidden.
@@Megageoe the fake transparencies don't really bother me if used on small things/sparingly, but on this game they go full screen with them...it's not pretty once you see it - you're always looking out for them :(
Looks like a lot more jaggies in the character models for the PS2 version. Colors also look different. I prefer the Dreamcast colors personally.
agree!
That's a good conversion from the original👍Nice review and tribute.
yeah its a pretty decent conversion and not a bad game - thanks for the kind words :)
I remember there's a really infuriating part in this game, where I think it's an owl that talks a whole lot. So you mash the 'A' button to get him to shut up, but the last thing he says is "Do you want to hear what I said again?" 😂 And 'Yes' is automatically highlighted, so when you keep mashing 'A', he will start all over again.
That rings a bell for me, i think it's got something to do with the Deku tree, or the Owl turns up at several points through the story to bother you with it's nonsense...get a proper job Owl!
21:14 "No Sir, they don't like it up em!" 😂 Dad's Army, great stuff! "DON'T PANIC!" 🤣
haha yeah totally! :)
"I got bored" Sums up pretty much every Zelda experience I've ever had. I get hyped up to play it, PLAY IT, then get stuck, get bored and stop playing 😂 That's usually what happens. Wind Waker was probably the only one that held my attention for just that little bit longer.
i've haven't completed every Zelda game, but i think i've played most of them and actually i enjoy them quite a lot. there are a few outliers though - this one i found dull, Tears of the Kingdom i got bored with the building / fighting things aspect (after a fair few hours mind) and Majora's mask i just couldn't get on with the repetition. Theres many Zelda games i've been completed more than once, so i think i'm a bit of a sucker for them!
I grew up playing this game as a kid. The music composition in this game is so freakin awesome.😃👍❤️🔥
agreed!
