I didn’t catch what the issue with VMP is all about. It is interesting to see Rocket To Russia as a gatefold. I’m not good at shootouts unless there is a distinct difference.
@vinylrichie007 It's a great copy, and there wasn't a big difference in the two of them except for what I pointed out. Overall, it's a good copy.
At age 54 Rocket still stands as my second favorite album of all time sandwiched in between Brian Eno's Another Green World at #3 and Revolver in the top slot. My first copy of R2R was on a cheap German cassette my buddy gave me back in the mid eighties and I played it until the tape snapped! I picked up a vinyl reissue about ten years ago and it sounds fine, but I don't think that Joey and co. (rest their leather clad souls) could care less about an audiophile pressing, especially Johnny; he'd probably wanna go as far and beat up the engineer! Thanks for the video. I'm gonna put this one on for the millionth time, chew out those rhythms on my bubblegum and sing along to the oldies!
@honiideslysses12 Awesome, man 😎. Thank you for your feedback. I totally appreciate you. ✊🏼
My review from my article on the top 15 punk albums Rocket to Russia: Released November 12, 1977. Reached #69 on the U.S. charts. Ramones formed in Forest Hills, Queens in 1974. There is a video on RUclips of them playing at CBGB's that year and an argument breaks out over which song to play next. They already had their signature style in 1974 for God's sake! So please let's not have any more fighting over who was the first punk band, Ramones or Sex Pistols. I saw them play in 1975 and years later I wrote. " Saw them at CBGB's and was blown away by their power. What a wall of sound! What a rush! Would have loved to talk to them after their set but their leather jackets gave me pause. The only other people who wore leather jackets at that time in the East Village were the Hell's Angels and I had already had an experience with one of them near their clubhouse on East 3rd Street. Not really a big deal, but after that I decided not to start up any conversations with them. So, my fear got the best of me and I missed an opportunity to talk to the greatest band in the world in the mid 70's. To this day I play their records and they remain one of my favorite bands." For most people who weren't around punk music and the Ramones at the outset, it is difficult to imagine the effect they had. Mary Harron interviewed them for the first issue of Punk magazine in January, 1976. This will give you some idea of what it was like. "When I first saw the Ramones I couldn't believe people were doing this. The dumb brattiness ‘Beat on the brat with a baseball bat.' There was this real cartoon element, and yet you're in a real place, you want to do something real, so you're in a situation where they could be real, they could be genuinely delinquent. It had an edge to it: they looked dumb-smart, smart-dumb." From the Ramones' press kit in June, 1975: " Their songs are brief, to the point, and every one a potential hit single...The Ramones all originate from Forest Hills and kids who grew up there become either musicians, degenerates or dentists. The Ramones are a little of each. Their sound is not unlike a fast drill on a rear molar." When their eponymous debut LP came out all my punk friends bought it and played it to death. Believe me, we had never heard anything like it. It was brutal and undeniable. Listening at stun levels we were in awe of its relentless buzzsaw power. In light of hardcore (the louder, faster, more aggressive music that came after punk and spawned slam dancing and stage diving) Ramones songs now seem almost mid-tempo. But I've read people at their live shows were literally holding onto their tables when they played--it was such a potent force coming at you. Choosing a best between the first three Ramones' albums has always been difficult for me. I must have heard them all fifty times and for this write-up I listened to all three twice again. And you know what? It’s still difficult. Their debut, Leave Home and Rocket To Russia all contain loads of great songs. How to pick just one? It would have been easy to pick their debut. That would have put everything neatly in chronological order, but this is not the 15 most important punk albums, it is the 15 best. There are two major differences that for me narrowed it down to just two. The mix on their first album is different from a more conventional one found on the others--Johnny's guitar is in the right channel and Dee Dee's bass is in the left. Some listeners might like this, others might not. It does have its perks. When I was giving punk lessons in my apartment, I could turn the knobs on my amp to isolate the two. The kids I was teaching loved hearing how skillful these two musicians were. Man, those guys could play! Let me tell you, hearing "I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement" like this was a joyful thing. Secondly, some of the best songs are faster and longer on the next two albums. So my two preferences narrowed it down to either Leave Home or Rocket To Russia. These are not 1 and 2 in my book; they are 1 and 1A. I would have chosen both of them, but decided in the end to pick only one album from each band. Actually, any of the first three LP's would make a fine choice on any best list. I nearly choked at the prospect of leaving off an album that contains "Glad To See You Go," "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment," "Carbona Not Glue," "Pinhead," "Commando" and "You Should Never have Opened That Door," but that's just what I did. Rocket To Russia has great songs too, leading off with "Cretin Hop" (what an attack they had!) Then there's the classic "Rockaway Beach" (which reached #66 on the U.S, charts), and "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" (which reached #81). Colin Abrahall, singer in the great British punk band G.B.H. has said that hearing "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" at age 15 on the radio was a huge influence in his life. But more on that when we come to G.B.H. "Locket Love" is a sweet little bubblegum song disguising a murder. "We're A Happy Family" has just about the wittiest, funniest, pop culture lyrics ever in a song and "Teenage Lobotomy" is not far behind. I think the album has just a smidge more power than Leave Home, there are fewer songs under two minutes and Johnny Ramone's signature lightning downstrokes unleashing pure punk power are better showcased. Rocket To Russia is my choice to start our quest for the top 15 punk LP's. Here are three songs for your listening pleasure:

Great vid! You can never go wrong with the Ramones. That blue splatter vinyl is gorgeous and love the gatefold.
@retromusings Yes. The Ramones always come through. Thank you, RM. 😊
This looks like a subliminal way to launder money. But I'm a cynic sometimes. My grail is a 1st press UK DSOTM that i got for $1500.00 complete and the vinyl is almost NM while the cover has a small amount of damage. Why would i put it behind plastic? Records are meant to be played. How would I 100% know the A2-B2 disc is still inside? You can buy frames for ten bucks. Just my 2 pennies. 😊
@@jaycoleman8062 I appreciate your two pennies. And I like your cynical point of view 💰 😎 Thank you for your comment 😀
Thanks so much for the shoutout Glenn!!! Always great to have you.
That's a much better way of grading records , 90% of records these days are graded vg+ which could mean anything .
@peterlaffey6328 Maybe the grading would be better, but not with those prices...
This is unbelievable Glenn. Ive run in to similar situations (though not $2500) at a few flea markets. Water damaged Beatles represses going for $100... absolutely nuts. As Mr. T used to say... I Pity the Fool that actually falls for this and purchases it... great video..
“Thriller” for $2000? What does he want for a completely destroyed “Rumours”? Don’t tell me, let me guess…$5000! Cuz it’s a CLASSIC!!!!!
@@monaural2.988 I wouldn't doubt it. Lol. And not only because it's a classic but because he has it slabbed in that plastic baseball card grading thingy. Lol. Thank you for your comment 🙏🏼 I appreciate you. 🤟🏼😎
I have heard people are trying to market slabbing.records. i think it is a joke lol
@frankgarcia9834 I agree, man.
Yes, the prices are ridiculous. Just to be clear, you understand it was not "him" that did the grading? Just wasn't clear if you were aware it service you send off for just like cards?
@mrhoffame I was not even aware that this was an actual thing in the vinyl community. I did my research, and this guy is not the only one. I found this seller's page on eBay. He has a high approval rate. People actually buy this stuff. I just can't believe it. And the bottom line is it's overpriced, and that Thriller isn't even vintage. But if he can sell it sure , more power to him. Lol, I'm just trying to make my VC friends aware of it. I appreciate your comment 🙏🏼 Thank you for the info, too. My frustration is definitely exaggerated in this video. Lol 😆😂
Hey that’s the old Zona Rosa cafe! It’s cool another cool small business moved in.
Thanks for a few good laughs this morning, Glenn!
@@tokyorecordstyle Absolutely Brian. I had to share this information with everyone. It's outrageous. And come to find out, this is actually a trend. Unbelievable.
I think the record with the middle finger on it is an Eminem album.
@davidkenner-rb8go Yes. Thank you for that info. I just looked it up. It's an Eminem pic disc for his album JDGAF. I just googled it and found this actual copy on EBAY. Same seller, and he wants $450. Is that a four hundred and fifty dollar record? Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate you. 🙏🏼
lol even in the baseball card world this wouldn’t fly. What company graded this record? That’s not a PSA rating.
@jorgeacevedo7934 My friend told me that he found these at the Burbank Card Show in the City of Anaheim, CA. He did not get the name of the dealer, though.
As a former baseball card collector, grading ruined the joy of collecting.
@@DamionPhoto1 Greed ruins everything.
That’s what you get for collecting vinyl lol jk. Same shit happened with cassettes and now it’s going this way with cds
@carpal08 Apparently, this is a trend. It's called "Slabbing."" These records actually get sealed shut, so you can't even open them up to play rhem. That just makes these prices even more ridiculous. Lol. Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it.
@@therealglennthebaker yes for vinyl you can thank Steve lame ass aoki I think he was the one who got it trendy. I saw a grade tape of Nevermind and the dude wanted like 3500 bucks. Shame normies and opportunists are ruining every hobby
Great video. I don’t think that record slabbing will stand the test of time. A record is different than a baseball card. And these prices are insane, seller from slapped records at factor 10 to the value of a record. That is ridiculous.
@Souldisco Thank you so much for watching. I agree. I don't think Slabbing will stand the test of time. But, to my surprise, there are some folks who actually buy these. But it is all in the name of greed. And greed is never good. Thank you for your comment and feedback. I appreciate you.
The whole point of a record is to play it just doesn't make sense to slab it 😭
@@therealglennthebaker thank you very much for your kind words.
Looks like those records are slabbed.
@vinylrichie007 I just learned about slabbing Rich. I had no idea this was a thing. Turns out you can't even open these to play them. It just gets worse. Lol. Apparently, these records do sell to some collectors. I just saw Noble Records' video on the subject. I had no idea man. Thanks for the info, Rich.
These are signs that this "vinyl revival" is coming to an end. Greed will destroy it as usual
@crazyprayingmantis5596 You might be right, my friend.
@@therealglennthebakerthis sucks ❤
Yea, this seller is definitely looking for some clueless person with more money than sense. I enjoyed the video and until 10:45 . TDS kicking in doesn't help an otherwise decent video.

It just means I'm making a little joke. Sorry if you couldn't handle it, but I appreciate the view and the otherwise decent comment...

silly question: where did you buy those plastic sleeves for the Michael Jackson thriller LP you have?? is there a specific name for this sleeve??

@@TheHSIHP A lot of folks are selling their collections these days... And I see cassettes making a big come back...
@@therealglennthebaker I only have like 300-400 records as it is but there's at least 100 I don't listen to. Interesting that people are selling collections ..
That price is ridiculous! Some of the most valuable records aren’t worth that much!!!!
I can understand a little how you could be finding all this sellers out of touch pricing totally ridiculous and insane but why get all fired up?? At the end of the day who the F cares? If this guy can sell those for even close to his asking then good on him. You or your friends certainly aren’t paying that so why worry. I sold an older well maintained BMW sports car 3 yrs ago for 2.5 thousand more than I thought it would sell for and that’s 3.5 more than I paid for it 4 yrs earlier. So ppl will either buy or not …. Simple, you just never know. Yes insane stupid prices but so what. BUYER BEWARE.
Wrong wrong wrong! The more greedy “entrepreneurs” charge for “collectibles” that are essentially worthless bits of plastic and paper - the closer we get to hell. Wealthy tech bros spend 3 million quid on an original Homer Simpson fart imported from Japan, while our own communities die in starvation, drug addiction and poverty.fck capitalism and the military industrial complex, it’ll be the death of us all and you should bow your head in shame for being so blindly and proudly obedient to it. Peace
@@vinylwood Sure! Good on him! Good on him for trying to rip people off! 😆 🤣 😂 If that is what you support good luck to you and have a good day.
@@therealglennthebaker wow ol” Glen got all fckin touchy. Listen only you think he’s RIPPING PPL OFF”. What an ignorant statement from what I was saying. So stupid, If the seller is making claims that are untrue or misleading or using false advertising or taking advantage of a crisis. Then it’s considered Ripping someone off. Retail 101: the seller can ask what he wants, the buyer has free will to buy or walk. Fck man what an angry simpleton.
Lol, yes a sucker is born every second but so are vultures. You can rationalize how you want but you seem like a real peach. 😂 you must be a used car dealer
@@frankgarcia9834 Goof.
One of the reasons I got out of the sports card business in 2020 was because of grading. It just made the greed even worse. I'm all for flipping and investing in cards, but unless you bow down the grading gods, it makes selling raw cards almost impossible. Everyone want immaculate cards that they could grade for a 10.
So interesting. It's crazy how much the seller is trying to flog those records at a baseball card event. The pressing for "The Thriller" album was huge so IMHO the value of a record also depends on its rarity value on top of that, the vinyl and sleeve condition and so forth. It would be interesting to know if he actually sold any of these over-priced records. Excellent topic and video!
@retromusings Thank you, RM. A lot of us are wondering if this seller has actually ever sold any of these. I doubt it. This might be like another eBay situation where anyone on there can ask for astronomical prices, but they aren't exactly selling them. Thanks for your feedback, RM. 👍🏻 😊
PUG POWER!!! 🤗🤗🤗
Maybe those prices are in Japanese yen. Is there a discount if he takes it out of the stupid slab so I can play it?
@@RekkidTalk That might be one explanation for those prices. 🤷🏻♂️😆🤣😂
Hey pal. Great and fun video. Thanks for sharing. You had me at Gemco. The first record I ever got was in a Gemco in the city of LaMirada. Though I have to say your first album is cooler than mine as I chose Chipmumk Punk. One funny story is I never kept that record but I was in Fullerton at White Rabbit records and they actually had that record. I couldn’t resist and had to get it. Played it once for nostalgia but probably never again, though I am thrilled to have it in my record collection. I think the bigger question isn’t how much that crazy dude was selling those records for at that astronomical price. But has there ever been someone who actually bought one from him. That is absolute bananas. Thanks again for the video. Have a great day my friend.
