Just a dude that loves to fly fish and tie flies. Join me on some awesome adventures through Utah, and for some awesome flies hand tied by me.
Missing the high country | Fly fishing Utah
This is from a day trip my biddy Greg and I took in August 2023. Posting the video in February 2024, it’s cold today and I am missing warm days at 10,000 ft. Hopefully this will get you excited for summer 2024! Thanks for watching!

Is this the best Stillwater trout fly?

Balanced leeches are major fish catcher for me on alpine lakes in the west. In this video I tie a brown one. Recipe below. Hook- firehole 551 (sz 8) Bead- firehole stone (fire orange) Pin Tail- marabou (brown) Dubbing- Arizona diamond dub (dark chocolate) Thanks for watching and follow me on Instagram if you’d like @gappmayerflies #flytying #flyfishing #fishing
Tiger trout | Fly Fishing Utah

A couple friends and I headed out for a day at the lake in search of tiger trout. It was nice and cool at higher elevations and we found some hungry fish. Although I broke my favorite fly rod this day I still had a blast and I am grateful for a good warranty. Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching. #flyfishing #troutfishing #fishing

Colorado River Cutthroat Trout | Fly Fishing Utah
Просмотров 5532 года назад
On the hunt for native fish, Greg and I set out to one of our favorite cutthroat streams. We had some fun, saw some moose, and soaked up some fresh air. Hope you enjoy watching the video as much as I enjoyed making it! #flyfishing #troutfishing #nativetrout
5 dry flies I never leave home without and how to tie them. Number 3 “the adams”
Просмотров 1462 года назад
The adams is a classic mayfly imitation that trout can’t seem to resist. Tie them in several different sizes and even change dubbing colors to match the local mayfly hatch. Thanks for watching! I went to local cutthroat stream to catch some fish and soak up some mountain energy! Thanks for watching. Enjoy. #flyfishing #trout #troutfishing
5 dry flies I never leave home without, and how to tie them. Number 4 “stimulator”.
Просмотров 2262 года назад
The stimulator is a super floaty fly, and it’s a fun one to tie. Hope you like the video. Give this one a whirl! #flyfishing #flytying
5 dry flies I never leave home without and how to tie them. Number 5 “parachute blue winged olive”
Просмотров 2152 года назад
Blue winged olive hatches in the spring always get me excited for things to come. The days are getting longer, the fish are eating dry flies again with reckless abandon, and I’m dreaming of summer camping trips fishing to rising fish. Hopefully you will enjoy this series and give this fly a try on your local baetis loving trout. #flyfishing #flytying
5 nymphs I never leave home without, and how to tie them. Number 1 “the guides choice hares ear”.
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.2 года назад
The guides choice hares ear is a staple in my fly nymph box. Whether I’m dropping it below a big hopper, or nymphing it deep this one is just plain deadly. Give it a whirl!
5 nymphs I never leave home without, and how to tie them. Number 2 “the simple sow bug”.
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.2 года назад
When rivers are full of sow bugs trout really seem to key in on them year round. This is a super simple, super effective version of a sow bug that I’ve tied and fished for several years with good success. Give it a go! #flyfishing #flytying
5 nymphs I never leave home without, and how to tie them. Number 4 “Soft hackle pheasant tail”.
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.2 года назад
The pheasant tail is a classic for a reason, and I’ve really been a big fan of adding a soft hackle to this fly for some added movement. Definitely give this one a go. #flyfishing #flytying
5 nymphs I never leave home without, and how to tie them. Number 4 “the buckskin caddis”.
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 года назад
This fly is so simple and easy to tie that you can crank out a whole bunch in a short time. This version probably won’t get 1000 likes for the gram, but what it will do is catch you some fish! Try them in sizes 12-16. #flytying #flyfishing
5 nymphs I never leave home without. And how to tie them. Number 5 “pats rubber legs”.
Просмотров 1 тыс.2 года назад
The pats rubber legs is a classic fly for a reason. You can vary color and size to mimic all types of stonefly nymphs you might encounter out on the river, and it’s pretty simple to tie. You definitely don’t want to get caught out on the water without a few in the box! #flytying #flyfishing

Do you like fishing the scuds under an indicator for stillwater? How deep do you usually fish them, I’m thinking of Uinta lakes. Thanks.
@@Daniel-td1ou Daniel, good question! And thanks for the comment. Under an indicator would work just fine, if you have a sink tip like and emergent tip or midge tip line that would work as well. Scuds are most active in low light so early morning or late In the day on sunny days, or anytime on overcast days work best. They swim in short spurts near the bottom around vegetation so target weed beds or other structure. Thanks for watching!
@@gappmayerflies458 Thanks!

Definitely looking forward to the warmer longer days. Great colors on those brookies.
Oh man, clocks change in a few weeks and the sun will be staying out til after 7. That’s gonna be nice. Thanks for watching Stacy!
Awesome creek and beautiful Bonnies! I’m pretty sure I know which creek this is, and it’s on my bucket list 🎣
Definitely an awesome little stream!
Watching this made me miss summer so bad! Awesome video bro!
Yeah making the video made me miss summer too! Few more months and we were there.
The best thing about finding a new fishing channel is binge watching past content. You and your buddy caught some incredible Cuttys. Well done!
Man this was a fun day! Can’t wait to get up to this lake again. Thanks for watching!
First time watching your channel, you caught some beautiful tigers!
Thanks for watching! Hopefully it won’t be your last time! Have a good weekend.
Over here teasing us with green grass and big brookies out of high elevation open water...😢 Nice feeeesh
Going through that footage definitely had me ready for the snow to melt. Happy we are having another good water year though! Thanks for watching Justin!
Awesome Fishing 🎣 and Excellent camera work!! Great job 🙌
Thanks Matt! It was a fun day! How are you doing? Can I do anything for you guys?
@@gappmayerflies458 Thanks Cody🙏🙂.....Just keep the pic's coming, Kid's are Adorable ❤
Snow will be gone in a couple of months.
Can’t wait!
Power bait dunkers dont realize how much fun fly fishing is. They kill most of the fish that they release.😢
So true! Thanks for watching!
Great video! do you know if this drainage counts for the Utah cutthroat slam?
Definitely does! Thanks for watching.
egg sucking balanced? black or bruised? maybe 2ft under indicator? i was just up there yesterday and got into several cuts but all on caddis or stripping a bruised bugger. didnt see any brooks
I think we were fishing brown balanced leeches this day. Maybe black as well. We fished 2 different lakes in this video so we caught brookies at the first and cutts at the second. Thanks for watching!
Very nice scud. Well done!
Thanks!
Your scuds are deadly. I’ve caught many fish on them.
Next time I see you, I will hook you up with a couple.
Awesome video bro! I’m going to have to try that dubbing noodle/dubbing loop combo technique. I’ve always just used a dubbing loop for the whole thing but what you’re saying about the translucent vail makes sense.
Give it a go!
Cool scud. Love fishing them. Great tie.
Thanks Stacy!
Great looking scuds!
Thanks!
Nice to see you rolling out the content lately.
Thanks for watching chase.
I can do without the mountain maggots but I’ll take the tigers
Ha! Same.
Thank you so much for that!
You’re welcome.
Gidday Mr Gappmayer. Nice work. Thanks.
Thanks for watching ken.
Great tie man. I've been having luck with these in peackock and blacks in simi seal. And all simi tail and body. Keep it up!
Definitely works well with the simi tail as well. Maybe I’ll tie one that way for the channel to show another option one of these days. That said I just love the way the marabou tail moves in the water. Thanks for watching!
Could you list the effective flies used in this video? :-) thanks a lot!
Brown and olive balanced leeches were mostly what we used in this video. Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much, you don't have a tutorial for this fly, do you? I love your tying Videos, so down to earth!
@@Diridari I don’t right now but I’ve been thinking about making one here soon. I kinda took the winter off from making videos due to some other things in life that needed attention. I need to get back on it though!
@@gappmayerflies458 I would love it. But I underline and support your decisions on priorities!
Love the video, thanks for sharing. I'm trying to do the Cutthroat slam, catch and release only fly fisherman. I live in Ogden, I was hoping you could give me a hint as to where that stream is located? I have a small 3 weight rod which would be perfect for it.
Hey Daniel, central Utah is full of awesome streams containing bonnevilles. Send me a message on Instagram @gappmayerflies if you want and I’ll point you in the direction of a couple of them.
This is a gem of a stream. Stumbled upon it just this fall. Great video 🙌
Definitely a gem! Thanks for watching!
Those are beauty Trout! I have yet to catch a Cutthroat! Dont really have them close by here. Awesome slo mo release
Thanks for watching!
Nice tigers bro! Sucks that your Sage broke though.
Definitely sucks to break a rod. I need to get it sent in ASAP.
😘😍🥰
😘
Tigers are one of the best fighting trout. Great colors and trip.
Fun fish! It’s always nice to get out there!
Sheep for days 😂😜 pretty tigers tho!
So many sheep. 🤣
Love that lake I caught a huge 22 inch tiger on a damsil fly there in the beginning of August
Right on! Sounds like a good time. Definitely a fun lake.
Great reservoir to catch Cutthroat and Tigers. Those were some nice fish to land.
Definitely a fun one!
Nice trip and thise are some good looking tigers. Love that mountain.
It was a fun one for sure. I love that area too. I’m sitting here now trying to figure out where I want to go for solo trips the next couple days. 🤔
Sweet little honey holes.
For sure!
Nice tiger trouts! Haven't fish any, yet...
Thanks for watching bro!
Nice Tigers! Hey, Sorry about your Sage.
It happens to the best of us.
Holy Sheep! Some great quailty Tigers.
Lots of sheep! Some cool fish too. Thanks for watching!
Where can I go catch tigers at 😭
Do you live in Utah?
@@gappmayerflies458 yes sir I’ve been to a couple of lakes but no tigers
Head up mirror lake highway in the uintas or the energy loop (Fairview canyon). Check out those areas on the dwr website on there interactive map and you might just find a few lakes holding them. They are kinda scattered all over the state. Good luck out there. Thanks for watching.
Mr Gappmayer, very nice fish and great fishing spot.
Thanks for watching ken!
Beautiful country. Wow just wow. What a great day at the lakes.
Definitely a beautiful area! Fun for exploring and fishing! Thanks as always for watching Stacy!
Nice work guys! Beautiful cutts and that brook was awesome 👌 👏
Thanks for watching Jeff! Did you get out this weekend?
@@gappmayerflies458 I did, I got into some brooks and cutts in the Uintas. Nothing as nice as you guys though 😳 I hope to get back to those lakes next year. Still waiting for a moter for my subaru 🤦♂️ Love the videos 👏👏
@@801troutbum glad you got into some! Hopefully the Subaru will be up and running asap. Glad you like the videos! Stay on the lookout for more in the future.
Awesome video guys! Enjoyed every second of it. I could almost smell the fresh mountain air…almost. What I wouldn’t give to be in Utah fishing with you guys right now!
Thanks for watching Dallin! Can’t wait to get you in some of these videos with us!
That video was so sick!!! Love the quality and the big fish. I really like to fish in the early morning silence. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
So I saw this notification earlier today and knew I needed to come home and watch it on the 65". The main lake treated you guys pretty well, especially for mid-summer, and especially from shore. Well done. You both got some nicer cutts. They sure are pretty from there. The trail to that little green pond can be tough to find. My first time up, I ended up too high and southward, like you guys. Still, you managed to pull out a good sized brook. Cool trip, guys.
Yeah man those fish are beautiful, and that is definitely a fun area to explore. Thanks for watching Justin!
Gorgeous country! Big fish! 👏
It was a fun day!
Wow, that was some intense, quality fishing!!
It was a fun day for sure! Thanks for watching!
Envious much! You and Greg hit some sweet off the beaten path locations.
We both are definitely always looking for cool water to fish! Thanks for watching chase!
Very colorful cutts.
Definitely some pretty ones!
Take me with you next time 😜
Definitely want to take you soon!
