I havnt read the book, just seen the film. I agree with fran being messed up from the rape. I think she was in inwardly in a, lot of pain, but outwardly appears a fairly strong character. Anyone who would write to her rape perpetrator trying to contact him, is messed up to be the point of being irritating to others...but it also has that deep Freudian level of , the harshest reality at its tenses , reactions and survival behaviour.

I was looking for book reviews (there aren't many) and found this. It's such a wonderful book. I hope that she decided to read the last 30 pages, as they were happy ones with good closure. Irving begins his novels at the end and in the case of the Hotel New Hampshire, the ending brought a perfect light to the story. When you consider the violent acts in the book,, one could say "the incest was consensual."
