    Rhetorical Analysis of “How ‘Fairy Tale’ Farms are Ruining Hudson Valley Agriculture” In the article, “How ‘Fairy Tale’ Farms are Ruining Hudson Valley Agriculture,” the author explains the impact of wealthy people buying farmland in the Hudson Valley which is creating difficulties for the farmers. The main argument of the article is that the new owners from the city have a wrong perspective on rural/farm life, even romanticizing it. The article explains that these new owners don’t have a true understanding of the farming industry, and this is leading to somewhat of a “modern-day feudal system.” The text does a great job of using anecdotes, data, and commentary to show the tension and relationship between the new wealthy landowners and the local farmers, and the effects of this change on the farmers. The article is directed towards an audience concerned with agriculture and land use. The message is clear- the influx of wealthy buyers into farming regions like the Hudson Valley is harmful to not just the farmers, but also the sustainability of the farming economy. The author wants to raise awareness about the financial and economic struggles of rural life, and fix the distorted perception of rural life that many may have. Ethos- for credibility, the author cites experts within the farming industry. For example, they showed insight from experts Sophie Ackoff from the National Young Farmers Coalition and Holly Rippon-Butler to help explain the challenges that the farmers go through. These experts help give authority and credibility towards the authors claims, showing that their claims are supported by professionals. This helps enhance the article’s ethos. Additionally, the article has data from Realtor.com. The data shows that the median listing price for farms, ranches, and undeveloped land in Columbia County increased by 62 percent between January 2020 and January 2022. These facts also help build trust with the audience, and helps the claims appear more well-researched. This helps the author show the true scale of this issue. This article particularly is strong in its use of pathos, appeal to emotion. The author uses personal stories from farmers such as Maddie Morley and Benjamin Roberts. The use of these stories make the reader empathic with the hardships that these farmers experience. For example, in the article Morley explains being put into an inflated market where the people from the city were making all-cash offers for the farms, and also when they explained the suggestion of using barns for both livestock and weddings. Furthermore, the bad outcome of Morley’s farming enterprise, which stopped after Robert died from cancer, helps move the audience emotionally, further enhancing its pathos. This helps support the authors claim even more about the negative alert of wealthy buyers and their idealized visions of farming. The author also uses logos in the article. Data is shown which describes the huge increase in farm prices during the pandemic. The article has specific examples of this, such as the high demand for one-bedroom rental units in Coxsackie, New York due to the increased economic strain. Moreover, the author describes the “slow-moving” loans from the United States Department of Agriculture, which are putting beginning farmers at a disadvantage compared to wealthy buyers, since they have faster access to financing. This use of logos supports the authors argument that changes are needed to support farmers in buying land. The author uses a great narrative style and keeps the reader engaged. The author implements emotional and easy to understand stories of farmers going through hardships due to the new influx. Imagery is also used in the article- the author describes the “fairy tale” farms in which the farmland is a beautiful picturesque landscape with no problems at all, which is the perspective of farming many new buyers have. But the real image of farming is much different, and that is one of the things the author is trying to raise awareness of. Overall, the author’s rhetorical strategies are very effective, especially the use of pathos. There is a great and varied use of all three rhetorical techniques, which helps the reader stay engaged, and the message to stick.

    Note for new players: table tennis used to be faster and spinier before 2014 because the ball was smaller (2000) and was made from celluloid

    • @luiswen4503
      @luiswen4503 9 месяцев назад

      That’s probably why in the older clips you see the players stand further from the table, because it was way faster and they needed time to react, but after the new ball, most of the rallies you often see are players playing faster and closer to the table.
