Head teacher Ruth Perry took her own life in January last year whilst waiting for the publication of an Ofsted report she knew would grade her school as "inadequate". Ruth’s sister, Professor Julia Waters, has been campaigning for change in the way Ofsted rates schools ever since. A review was published today into Ofsted's response to Ruth Perry’s death, and yesterday the Government announced c...

One or two-word Ofsted inspection grades for England's schools are being scrapped immediately. Early next year, school improvement teams will be set up in every area, and the Government says it will continue to intervene in struggling schools. By September 2025, parents will be able to view a new "report card" describing what inspectors have found at a school. BBC Correspondent Ellie Price join...

    I’m a teacher. In the classroom at 7.10am and leave at 530 as building gets locked. I work evenings marking and often a part of the weekend. Having one afternoon PPA time per week at home would help work life balance hugely. The profession is on its knees!

      That's why I left. I have a PhD in Physics and I used to teach secondary Physics. I now work in IT. Poor pay, long hours, poor behaviour (from parents as well as the kids), lack of respect for education from staff (especially school management) and school management bending over backwards to please ofsted and their ridiculous demands all contributed to me leaving the profession.

    I have worked from home with one day a week now in the office ever since covid. We have hit our targets every year since but people are happier. People can go in more often if they want. It’s not perfect, but it wasn’t perfect before. Two days a week might be better but 100% should not revert to five.

    I've been a teacher for 25 years. When the govt wanted to privatise all schools it was essential all schools failed OFSTED. As far as driving up standards forget it! British schools are dreadful and all the schools I've worked in are run by politicians. No school is outstanding, and if they are deemed so we have to ask by whose standards, believe me those standards are very low? All of this is smoke and mirrors. What's missing in schools is solid sensible and reasonable leadership and a minimum level of discipline. That is never going to happen in a society which cannot even bring itself to define male and female genders.

    I was in secondary school when OFSTED inspections were introduced. We had an assembly informing us the inspectors were visiting and we all knew what needed to be done. It was the one day teachers and students united against a common enemy.

    As someone who works in education I can honestly say Ofsted inspectors can be absolutely vile people! I don’t think half of them are interested in making improvements, the inspector I came across was rude, spiteful, and came in with attitude, asked no questions, acted like she didn’t even want to be there! Fortunately we were graded ‘good’ but I can completely understand how this headteacher musta felt. The purpose of Ofsted is suppose to be to improve education, not rain down on overworked and underpaid staff

  • @TCSC47
    @TCSC47 10 месяцев назад

    Ofsted has always been a "political" organisation thought up in the dying days of Thatcher and put into action by Major, as part of their plan to marginalise any power bases in Britain that the Tories felt threatened them. There was already a school's inspectorate in place, that as a teacher at the time, I found perfectly acceptable. What Thatcher and Major wanted was inspection on the cheap who would supply simple sound bites that they could use in pursuit of their politics and this has been the ethos of Ofsted ever since. Hence these ridicules one word summaries! Naively on my part I used to assume Ofsted was supposed to be quality control of teaching but I have found it to be the opposite of that. What Ofsted does is to "Name, Blame, and Shame" a school. In my 20 years of teaching in one secondary school, I was Ofstedded only twice! I personally never received a single word of feedback on my teaching. Did this mean I was a perfect teacher? I very much doubt it. Everybody has something they could improve upon. And only two Ofsteds!?? Ofsted -- totally unfit for purpose other than to give teachers nervous breakdowns.

    As would any dramatic change in circumstances affecting anyone else across the entire economy (unemployment, bad divorce, medical diagnosis etc). Of course, the suicide of a teacher is incredibly sad - but going after Ofsted and wanting to get rid of it after tragic tale isn't the solution, surely?

    Desperately sorry that this wonderful headmistress was treated by Ofstead so appallingly. Further enquiries need to be made as to real reasons behind this rating. What part has a strange desire for academy schools played in the strange decision Head of Ofstead should be dismissed for her callous remarks...not allowed to resign. I knew Caversham Primary School over many years. The children were always polite and well dressed. They visited the local library and were alert and intelligent. As a head of this school Miss Perry must have been dedicated and well experienced. The whole ethos of a school cannot be condemned by a handful of people making a brief visit and biased assumptions. A very valued life has been lost. Pupils are having to deal with a situation thar could have been avoided. I trained as an infants teacher....I thank God I am not one today .

    55 years ago, I started the secondary school for the first year. We just did gardening at the time. Great in the summer in the garden, weeding brilliant , when I left school, unable to write my own name , you need inspection to make sure the teachers are doing their job properly , i’m very sorry about this teacher committing suicide sorry for a family , but I think it’s more like her a tick boxing exercise

    OFSTED have had school leaders and heads collapse during their inspections, even having heart attacks - and they've still carried on with the inspection. OFSTED and the Lead inspector have blood on their hands and it's not the first time. Theyve ruined careers and lives with thier dreadful behaviour.

    OFSTED are not and have not been fit for purpose for many years - inspectors are poorly trained and badly informed has beens who are out of touch with mainstream education. Couple this with the fact that Inspector teams are commercial businesses and that many "inspectors" are on an ego trip and you get a definite toxic agenda that needs scrapping immediately.

    Lots of we Headteachers and former headteachers have been pointing out the major flaws in Ofsted for as long as it has existed - about 30 years. The previous incarnation of HMIs visiting, with virtually no notice (I had 10 minutes warning for the first with an HMI), was fine. Everyone expects inspection, but the aggressive, unprofessional, fault-finding version of Ofsted that we have seen perpetrated on schools for 30 years has been counter-productive, and a major reason why people leave the profession. The inspectors, apart from anything else, are not experts. My inspection (near the end of my career - nothing to do with the inspection!) in a primary school, included two secondary school subject specialists and a lay inspector on a power/ego trip. Never having worked in education or with children, what she didn't know about schools wasn't worth knowing (in her own opinion). With two teachers in tears on the first day, I had to tackle the lead inspector. Looking back, I wish I had banned them from the school until they had learned a bit of professionalism which didn't include the bullying of the younger members of staff. But if you wonder where this arrogance came from, look at those who ran the DfE and Ofsted.
