Zippo butane vs regular including how to fix butane issues and prevent evaporation in inserts
This video shows the differences between the three different Zippo butane inserts (single torch/jet, double torch/jet, yellow flame) and the regular insert. How to adjust the butane inserts if they won't light. How to determine which insert is best for you: regular, or the various butane inserts. This includes commentary on use cases, the rechargeable arc insert, how to prime butane inserts, and related matters. And yes, I mistakenly said near the end propane instead of butane but you'll forgive me I hope. :-)

LoRa Mesh as an Adjunct to Local Packet and/or APRS for ARES

Let's have a quick look at Lora and Meshtastic and see if the functionality is something that could be used as an adjunct to packet and APRS by ARES teams during emergencies. Introduction to Network Radio

2018-08-24: A quick introduction to network radio (NR) that's lacking a lot of useful things, and I might have made a technical goof here or there, but hopefully it will give you enough context. I overdrove the audio a bit so don't turn it up too loud. :-) More details below... Meshtastic doesn't seem to be going anywhere aside from basic messaging. Try looking into unsigned io and reticulum RNode. It does what you're looking for.

    I was under the impression that a repeater could also repeated an encrypted packet from one use to another and the data would remain encrypted and only accessible to the users that had that encryption key/channel configured. Is that not true and encrypted messages can only pass from one radio to another directly? Thank for the great info here.

      I agree with you. I believe this is the case.

    12:45 you say that the "public" channel can go thru repeaters, but the targeted messaging cannot and is "point to point". i believe this is false and that any packets using the same MODEM settings will get repeated and can bounce thru other nodes regardless of their encryption or if they are targeted for a specific node.

      That is a good question and I do not know the answer to that one. I haven't tested that case. I've only tested peer to peer.

    Every time my area gets a stiff breeze, a wildland fighter, a wet winter, or an earthquake, the Amateur radio infrastructure fails immediately. The domestic Internet and the telephone system ( Especially after Hurricane Katrina) are FAR more robust than the Amateur systems. Sorry Hams, but your American Disaster recovery mission domestically will only last for a very short time after a disaster. We may be useful for a longer time for overseas missions for third-world applications ( You know, like Puerto Rico!)

      Another note re meshtastic is that there is a module for serial emulation although more analogous to a TNC would be barebones devices like the ebyte E22 which don't use LoraWAN but will simply make a serial session between radios. Some of the drag boards have an AT command set, but even these cheap Chinese boards are easy enough to program - unfortunately not that user friendly as parameters are set in a format you can either get from their manual or download their usb config tool and see the params it throws out when you change variables. One thing I don't like is instead of sending a +++ to break out there's actually a pin you need to control with a GPIO (on the usb dongles they sell it is already soldered to a button). The p2p Lora does support broadcast and relay, although in messing around I've found it is far better to have two separate radio chips and you can program your own software to grab anything it hears on one tty to process it and dump it out the other - and yes you can have this on an offset frequency to minimize collisions (although Lora does a good job with its own spreading). 9.6kbit/s is more than achievable when using over a modest distance with a decent antenna. You can turn off FEC if you're going to use improved error correction (or you're using a packet protocol that is error tolerant and will retransmit).

      Yes you can. NR is simply a smartphone capable of Wi-Fi and LTE connection like any other typical phone. If you can operate your everyday smartphone, there’s no need for a tutorial.

    The reason I got into ham radio was to be independent from the network. This stuff is backwards

  • @samallan6616
    @samallan6616 6 лет назад

    A nice presentation. Unfortunately I cut my teeth on 'real' RF starting with CB, then GMRS repeaters in the '80s, then ham radio in the 90's. I can see this technology as a great way to NOT use conventional RF hobbies like ham radio, and another reason agencies like the FCC will use to try and reallocate the ham radio frequencies that are currently falling into dis-use. Why bother with tons of equipment, miles of coax and large antennas when you can buy one of these things and talk or text all over the world without the worry over tests and licensing? In southern california there exists hundreds of repeaters with only a scant few in actual use. The rest are falling off the air for many reasons. So why should I spend more money on a device to talk over the internet when all hams should be using and supporting the frequencies, clubs and repeaters already on the air, many of which are already connected to VoIP networks. The fate of ham radio is clearly sealed as a dated hobby that no kid finds fascinating anymore. good luck the next time the FCC decides to take away 2 meters, 222 mhz and 70 cm for commercial purposes!

    • @markej4801
      @markej4801 6 лет назад

      stacy mc intyre, I feel your pain. I have been away from the amateur bands for over a quarter century and was recently given a dual band HT. I was shocked to find almost no activity on either 2M or 70cm in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area. The calendar on the most local club is limited to a couple of meetings a month and a couple of on air meets. A swap meet is planned by Fort Worth's group later this month. When I was involved back in the day, all local repeaters (Dayton, OH) were crazy busy and even a radio check was greeted and an ensuing rag chew could be expected. We even had connections with other clubs and 10M repeaters that allowed connection nationwide (I even contacted Gitmo!). The Dayton Hamvention was a flurry of activity that lasted well over 3 days, but is now held in a different town close by on a much limited basis. The lack of activity shows there is little actual interest in the hobby, that other aspects of life have crept in. Real everyday communications happen over the smart phones of the day and computers (laptops, pads, etc) far outstrip what is allowed on the ham bands. Apparently, INR has a much expanded capability over anything that is allowed on our bands and can be inclusive to this great hobby. I haven't looked at HF at all recently, so can't speak to the use of the various bands there, but if 2M/70cm is any indication, I suspect ham radio is falling into the "has been", "curiosity" spectrum. I still see great personal value in my license and will continue to maintain it and will most likely try to work my way back into the hobby, but INR might be that direction I turn. There are decided advantages in "real" RF, but there are disadvantages as well. Technology has advanced and, as hams, so should we. This is indeed a good presentation of NR and I will look into it further. The cost of the machinery appears far less than that of a decent station and takes up much less space, so I'm willing to at least consider such an investment, even in my retired and less than before income. :D

      @wushock92 5 лет назад

      Here in Kansas, there are more repeaters on the air now than when I first licensed back in the late 1980s. And the number of kids getting their tickets is encouraging.
